Not quite on topic (but given this thread drifts from individual finals to finals series, I'm not so sure...), but clearly related.

Classic FTS/Geelong, to them averaging 6.75 in a runner-up team’s higher scoring finals series is actually better than averaging 7 for a Premier in a lower scoring series of finals matches. 6th most successful footballer in his family gets anywhere near match Hungry Thirsty’s 25% of goals scored in his 3 finals games that series, CATS win the flag. But he didn’t, so they didn’t.
Never change Cats fans.
Is hungry’s 1980 finals goal AVERAGE the best ever? I honestly don’t know. I.e. has anyone else got 15+ from two finals? Or 8+ from one?
I do know that the highest total goals in a finals series is Ablett’s 27. Incidentally, I was at 3 of those 4 finals - what a time it was!
Lucky you guys lost to Essendon in the QF so GAS could play an extra game. That’s why average is more impressive than total.

Yeah, thanks. I know how averages work.
Cool, it’s just weird that you are boasting about totals rather than averages.

Who is Ron Todd?

Yeah, thanks. I know how averages work.
Bartlett had an astounding finals series but there was a reason for that. The reason was he was an astounding player. An absolute superstar of our game.
Actually handballed to Rob Wiley in the goal square in 1980, could have easily had 8 goals, plus he missed a few sitters tooAnd he didn’t handball.
He completely mugged his opponents that whole finals series. i don’t think you can do something like that just simply because you are a brilliant player, you also probably need a dopey opponent or two in there to help. But he was a brilliant player, I saw a lot of him. Would easily be the most despised player I have seen by opposition supporters when he kicked a goal and ran back towards the centre with two arms aloft. But nobody could ever catch him to tackle him or whack him. I think he was sneakily tough too just quietly.
Also he won 3 Simpson medals in a row 10 years earlier in the WAFL against Polly Farmers side.I think Barry Cable deserves a mention some of his finals stats are enormous. 1977 finals series is very impressive.
I don’t know if there is a better average than Hungry’s 7 but from vague memory he might have been level on the most every kicked in a finals series before 6th most successful footballer in his family got his 27 in an amount of matches that would do the World Series proud.
Update: Ron Todd 23 in 3 finals in his final year in the VFL as a 22yo in 1939 @ 7.66 average has the highest average across multiple finals. Lockett with 9 in one match in 1991 has the highest average overall.
6 v Melbourne
11 v Saints
6 v Melbourne
The only win was the middle one in the PF. Played his last game in the VFL as a 22yo.
So far found just 7 players who have averaged above 6 goals in a finals series, but it seems to have been done 8 times with Soapy Vallance managing it twice. It is very rare to average more than 6 goals in a finals series.
9 Lockett 1991(1 final)
7.66 Todd 1939, also averaged 6 across 3 finals in 1938.
7.5 McKenna(2 games) 1970
7 Bartlett 1980
7 Soapy Vallance 1931(2 games)
6.75 6th most successful footballer in his family 1992
6.66 Jack Mueller 1948, another legendary player, played for Demons. (Also 18 in 3 finals in 1946)
6.66 Soapy Vallance 1932(3 games)
The human handball free zone Hungry Thirsty Bartlett the only non-Full Forward who seems to be anywhere near the list.
FreddyTwoShoes check the update, these are all the ones I could find.
A lot like Yaaabbblet calls around our schools. Thanks Meteoric. So, what I'm seeing is that KB is actually equal 4th on the all-time finals-series goal averages. Don't get me wrong - those are all phenomenal finals series.
For nostalgia's sake, pretty well every kid in my primary school used to commentate themselves as "Bartlett" during lunchtime games. They'd yell out things like "And Bartlett runs toward goal, and he's kicked it" as they played. Seemed normal then, but maybe that's where the first seed of resentment was planted.
Still not worthy of being a foundation club.
Ask a Richmond supporter, they will have plenty to say, they'd be wrong , but they will still have plenty to say.Gary Ablett
