Top 5 Luckiest Players To Win a Brownlow

Going get shot down for this one. Paul Meldrum from Carlton in either 86 or 87. Absoluted carved them up for the first 7 or 8 rounds and was way out in front from memory. Peter Motley was badly injured in a car crash and Molly was never the same. However 7-8 rounds is not a season.

Mckernan. What did he do trip by hand or something? Left him with all sorts of Psych probs. Never attained the same heights.

Believe Brownlow is for FAIREST & BEST...that's why so many of the BEST players miss out.

Corey McKernan & Chris Grant were very unlucky to miss out tho Corey has made up with it with 2 premiership medallions which IMO is way better than an award which depends on umpires. :)
she has a point

Considering Hird and Voss won it, No.

Corza deserved it, but you can't say hird and Voss were lucky to go one step further than him, as hird and voss are still champions and Corza's winding down his.

Tripping by hand? Nobody deserves to lose a Brownlow bwecause of that. It was pathetic. The fact that Hird and Voss have had far better careers is totally irrelevant - in that year McKernan should have won, therefore Voss and Hird were lucky.

there is no luck involved in winning a brownlow, look back at the winners and form a team, that team would be unbeatable.

When Teasdale, Wilson, Wanganeen and Liberatore win Brownlows, but Bartlett, Matthews, Matera and Carey miss out, there is undoubtedly some luck involved.

Hard to say if anyone is ever lucky to win a Brownlow, but when they first went to 2 umpires, the teething problems associated with the Brownlow and the umpires going 6-4-2 certainly made things more interesting.

You can say that people have been surprised in some years with who has won (case in point..Dipper in 1986), if you know what that player has been like previously.

On the Williams not getting votes when having 43 touches in a game..he also conceded 2 50 metre penalties..at the same time..reckon that wouldn't play on the umpire's minds at the time?

Someone mentioned Moss winning in 1975..he won in 1976, but..over just 4 years with the Dons, Moss had an amazing run..2nd in his first year behind Greig, eq. 3rd in '75 and then the win in '76 + 3 straight BnF's from '74 to '76. Hard to pass on those stats.

there's quite a few unlucky players but i think the unluckiest goes to Peter Matera.

In 1995 he polled enough votes to win in every brownlow count since WWII - except the year he polled them in! That means in terms of votes, he had a better year than all the brownlow winners since 1945 but yet doesn't have a brownlow

Chris Grant has to be the most unlucky not to have won a brownlow, in 97 he was reported for a week for something not one of umpires thought was reportable, including field, boundary and goal umpires who saw it but Ian Collins pushed it along.
Also in 96 he lost by one vote in a team that came 15th only ahead of Fitzroy, in hte last game fo the season against essendon hird got the 3 and grant got the 2, if the dogs had of won (hypothetically) grant would have got the 3 and he would have been tied with Voss not Hird.
McKernan was unlucky but Grant was more unlucky, if that makes sense

Irrespective of the Brownlow, he deserved that Norm Smith. Who was better on that field than him in that game?
He was absolutely outstanding, and deserved that medal. I hate Collingwood just as much as the next non-collingwood supporting Victorian, but I'll give credit where it is due.

Voss was - even the selectors admitted that he wouyld have received the Norm Smith if they made the decision closer to the end of the game.

The awarding of the medal to Buckley will go down in history as a sympathy gesture.

I think this thread really needs some clairification.

Is it asking who was the luckiest winner in terms of a season played,
ie. who played the worst in a season yet still won the Brownlow??

Or does it mean who was the worst player ever over their career yet still managed to win a Brownlow??

If it is the 2nd option, there is no way that you could ever count Teasdale as a lucky winner as was he easily the dominate player of the VFL the season (1978?) he won the Brownlow.

He took the most marks and had the most hitouts in the comp. as well kicking a swag of goals and basically got South Melb. into the finals by himself.

Brian Wilson on the other hand could qualify for both options!!!!!

The selectors never admitted Voss would've won , they only said Voss would have received more votes than he did(he finished 4th behind Buckley , Rocca and Lappin)
Everyone apart from Michael Lovett said they would have kept Buckley as their BOG regardless.

Yeah nothing changes, you like most pie supporters fail to offer an opinion and/or a debate of your own and instead choose to critizise others for theirs.

C`mon Mick youre being a bit tough on the pies , he problably had to get his 2yo neighbough to type that for him, remember none of them can read or right and when they do we call them Essendon supporters.

Neither. It was who had a bit of luck to win a Brownlow, eg another gun player that year missed out on votes (Williams), or got injured (the years Knights Carman and Greening could have won), or got suspended for dubious reasons (Grant and McKernan).

You dont even give an argument why Buckley should not of won his Brownlow. "didn't deserve the Norm Smith either" is not an argument for the way he played during the home and away season. Why dont you think of a reason why he didnt deserve it. Why dont you also think about all the years he ws very unlucky to miss out on the Brownlow.

Personally I think Voss deserved the Norm Smith in 2002, but Buckley was also a deserving choice. For anyone to suggest he was not worthy of the Brownlow last year is talking out of their Garry Glitter.

IMO
Luckiest Players

1) Adam Goodes............(swans had several players who performed better)
2) Nathan Buckley..........(didn't deserve the Norm Smith either)3) Shane Woewodin........(blonde hair got noticed)
4) Jason Akermanis.........(see above)
5) Scott Wynd...............(good year but not in the top ten)

Top 5 Players To Miss Out

1) Gary Ablett...............(best ever)
2) Wayne Carey............(second best ever)
3) Andrew McLoud........(still can't believe he hasn't won one)
4) SOS........................(fullback of the century, say no more)
5) Peter Matera............(two sensational years)

Three points- Where is Leigh Matthews? Aker is a damn good player and attracts umpire attention. Buckley had to work fairly hard to win one.

If Coliingwood had won, and that behind been a goal, Anthony Rocca would have won the Norm Smith.
