We need the draft picks through too....
We need more quality young players----we have neglected this for the best part of the entire decade.

True but we have 4-5 young players on our books already waiting for a midfield opportunity. Plus Jordy who could move midfield to make room for Gunston.

It will be an interesting week . Do we trade into the draft and cap relief or do we recruit for immediate need.

Numbers (salary) being bandied around (Brown nose journo) for Steapho and Flip couldn’t really be true could they?

If we land Gunston then the salary cap problems were exaggerated.

If we don’t land Gunston and replace Treloar and Phillips with draft picks then we will know for sure we were in a world of cap pain.

Even then it's not clear. Could also mean we're looking at 95% TPP in 2021 to enable us to make a big offer to someone using the 105% in 2022.

I don't think that will be certain then either. We may just be resetting with a mini-rebuild and think that we can better value next year for Treloar's salary and his traded in draft pick.

Grundy didn’t have a million dollar year. If you want that money you need to perform.

Grundy was reportedly on $500-600k this year. His new deal doesn't start till next season.

Surely not a first round pick for somebody in their 30’s next season. Gunston above average player but not that good!
Gunston won’t be 30 until after next season finishes. He’s only 18 months older than Treloar, contracted, and wanted by his current team. He’s absolutely worth a first round pick.

Years gone by you'd get a 2nd rounder for a player at the tail end of their career like him. After all 3 years potentially 4 is not a lot of service for a first round pick. But who knows now days especially with us.

You answered your own question, getting close to a flag with a second string backline.
This was all due to Longmuir. No coincidence that in the 2 years he was here, we play off in a GF and should have won the 2019 prelim.
He leaves and we go back to the same stodgy game plan.
Sanderson is in charge of a sub performing forward line, Harvey in charge of a midfield that is constantly beaten when he have a ruck beast.

Where is the development in young players? Daicos was a revelation, but no games put into Murphy, Bianco, Rantall.

These coaches are all Buckley's boys club.

2 flags in 60 years both coached by "outsiders".

Says it all.

You have a very short memory - 2019 game plan was very different to 2018.
So Longmuir was still at the club when, what you consider a bad game plan change, happened.
As to development, I suggest your read Buckenaras article posted here a few days ago which was very complimentary on this issue.

No but the concept of the club cleaning out contracted players and subsidising wages for the express purpose of running a TPP at 95%.... just to overpay for an imaginary big fish in a years time.... sounds a bit fanciful to me.

Jack Martin at Carlton is reportedly in the top 10 players in the league this year due to a heavily front ended contract. Apparently Luke Ball nominated a higher salary and his contract was front ended. It does happen.

All I'll say is that if you believe every figure bandied about for our players we'd be over the cap by at least $3-4 million.

If he was uncontracted then yeah, maybe, but he’s contracted for two years and the Hawks want to keep him.

I'm still bullish about our premiership chances in the next couple of years. Get an injury run like the top teams have had (yeah I know), land a player like Gunston who instantly helps our forward line issues and gives players like Degoey and Elliott more midfield minutes and we are right in it.

Again, just keep it simple. Gunston in the forward line kicking his standard 40+ goals, Degoey playing Treloar's role in the middle. Attack F/A next year.

Going to be really really pissed off if we are moving Treloar and bringing in Gunston.

Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.

I'm on board for a mini rebuild if we're hitting the draft or trading for players under 25, bust seems we're always half pregnant, not sure what we are actually doing.

Create a template for a clear direction for the next 5 years.
Prioritize the steps you need to get there.
Profit.

Definitely. But our squeeze seems to be coming from somewhere if not these two. If it’s all real or perceived too.

We've mentioned publicly that we want to hit this draft - why on earth would we consider trading our 1st for Gunston?

The only situation would be if we gave our 1st but they give their 2nd in return (Reef) - Hawks wouldn't do that.
