The only real explanation is that it was a reaction to getting smashed by the Cats. I think they were still planning to keep the list together before then.
Perhaps, they knew the cap reckoning was coming and the Cats game precipitated the decision. Seems flawed still, why not plan for doing that in 12 months and get a proper return.

I thought I'd read that Adelaide would not bid on JUH at #1 because they wanted to honour their #1 pick with this accolade and the nice little bonus that goes with it. If they bid then their pick will be #2 and not get the bonus from NAB, I assume.

Our recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie had a Q&A with journalists last week and laughed off that bonus saying 'i think anyone who's selected in the Top 5 is going to be looked after money-wise'

Also confirmed that they'd strictly stick to their talent order, the 'prestige' of Pick 1 won't come into it.

Those actual picks bacame Griffin Logue and Sam Weideman.
We got Sier.

Did we overpay?
No imo.
The picks could have been used in a trade for Charlie Dixon (pick 10) and either Prestia (pick 6) or Tom Mitchell (pick 14). IMO this is where the real stuff up occurred.

I think they will expect Thilthorpe or Hollands to fall to their pick 9 if they over look them at 1
That’s probably a bit fanciful to expect either of those to make it past 6.

I think they might have been able to avoid or at least delay the cap reckoning, but chose not to because after the Cats game they decided that keeping the list together wasn't going to be good enough.

I wouldn't be surprised. There's just as much consensus on bigfooty as normal, because we base our opinions on the opinions of few. But in clubland, it's likely that there is less consensus than normal due to covid and the lack of exposure to the elite pathways.

Has anyone else heard it was because we allegedly may have given some players some Holden’s that weren’t in the cap that suddenly were in the cap and it was suddenly shit the pants time?

Thilthorpe has played all year, so there’s no lack of exposure there. Holland’s maybe. I’d be a bit bewildered if Thilthorpe was available at 6 and Essendon passed on him 3 times though, after they just lost Daniher.

Fine with that decision but why not get a good return by selling them with some warning so we can bargain. Put it off 12 months and get a better deal.

My guess is: I think they thought they were going to get a good return with Treloar. They thought he'd have been willing to go to GC, who they knew were keen. When he said no, they still thought they'd be able to convince him. Due to their mismanaged attempts to convince him, it all went pear-shaped and they had no choice other than trading him for whatever they could get.

Thilthorpe has groin issues and some believe it might be OP, not good in a 200cm baby, there are concerns about him getting it right in the immediate future, so he might be looked upon as more long term which might scare a few teams

Have to say I can't buy that. Most of the players you list were part of the normal list turnover every club does. Every year the cap refreshes as players depart. We did something very different. They were 'the sh-t is about to his the fan, we stuffed our planning and we need to burn a few players quickly' type decisions

All the stuff coming out of the club is propaganda, "we are positioning ourselves to strengthen via the draft", "we want to be in a better position to pursue free agents" etc. If there had even been minor truth to the bs we would have been planning and organising towards those ends well before time and got a much better deal.

Why we were so late to our own firesale remains unknown. Needs an explanation. There was no specific targeting. We just have let the cap problem fester, someone or everyone has been asleep at the wheel and we have to make hasty decisions. Result is we have burned A grade talent and our best junior and will struggle to get anyone near the talent of either Treloar or Stephenson from the 2019/20 drafts. Just a simple stuff up.

The propaganda the I hate the most is we loaded up going for the gold and this was the result. BS. Tiges, Cats, Eagles have injected A grade talent into their list in the last few seasons via trade or FA, we did with Treloar seasons ago. Good manangement would make this compatible with maintaining a list and not having a firesale. All these top clubs were going for it, loading up, we are the only one who messed that up and sold valuable assets way below value.

Thats what the club needs to own and a few more should fall on their sword.

Happy to agree to disagree. My views on Treloar, Stevo and Phillips are on the record. We'll never know the full story but I think from what little we have been told there were very specific reasons beyond their impending salary that they were targeted.

I'm disappointed we weren't able to do better at the trade table, but I'll wait till after the draft to make that call 1 way or the other.

The club discussed potential trades with/for Treloar (GCS) and Phillips (Cats) in 2019 so their inclusion among the trade options this year shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Stevo was the only 1 of the 3 that came a little unexpectedly.

Hine will be beside himself.

Yes, he will be backing himself in to find some nuggets based on projections. A lot changes in a year if footy.

Surely it will be the most unpredictable draft in years and the phantoms will be quite untrustworthy.

The only thing being borne out in the phantoms is that there is likely to be a few sliders, and that there are some talented kids to be had in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

Who are Adelaide supporters hoping for the most at pick 1?

They might well take McDonald but given the troubles that club has faced since the 2017 Grand Final it wouldn't surprise me at all if they don't risk the go home factor and take the local boy who can play the same position as McDonald.

I'm not sure there is a "go-home" factor with McDonald. He's said he doesn't care where he goes and that he aims to be a 1 club player.

Seems to have come as a pretty big surprise to Treloar!!!

Think you are being very generous to the club. If they had real designs on moving Treloar and Phillips earlier they stand condemned for such late action completely negating the chance for a reasonable outcome. Then there is the whole topic of giving 3 players very generous contracts then 12-24 months later deciding you want to move them on mid contract with little warning.

How do they reconcile that without admitting to a monumental stuff up? They can’t.

Going by the poll on their board they've gone for Hollands

Without trying to shadow you today if their are more quality sliders in round 3 and 4 that means there are more poor picks in round 1 and 2. Hope we don't jag them. Reef might have gone up the board if he had played in 2020 but he could have also drifted. Be a bit more of a lottery for everyone this year. It may be the 2021 draft is the real beneficiary of this. An unnamed recruiter in the HS today said he believed the 2021 picks 30-40 next year would be like the 11-20 this year. Hope he is wrong.
