Their going to want a player and the same names the Melbourne throw up they will to. Better dealing with St Kilda who have made everyone aware that they want more picks inside top 20.
Getting pick 1 will take a hell of a lot more though, and rightfully so. Would be a bit of a waste to try and get our hands on it when the player we want will probably be there at pick 4, probably even 5. sighhhhhhh

Problem is we can't give the saints picks in the top 20 we have all of pick 6 in the top 20

Going to have to package a couple of players with say some of our 2nd rounders to get say Geelong's first rounder or Norths. Thats the way to do it. What draft pick would say 26 + 27 net us. Unlikely to be inside the top 15. Say a Minson plus 26 could get us around the 10 - 12 range. If people want that pick 1 (which i do) then thats what has to be considered.

Problem going all out for pick 1 is the amount of players we need to bring in this season, if we somehow manage to get a second rounder for Jones I'd rather either take pick 6 and the three second rounders to the draft or use the three second rounders to bring in some players that are ready to go

The issue with it is that the worse you performed, the better the compensation. Going off precedent, 3 is unfortunately adequate. Hawks got such a high pick for Franklin (19?) as they were a top team. We got a good pick for Ward (6) because we sucked. Melbourne get 3 because they sucked even more.

To sum it up, Hawks got robbed because Franklin is worth a lot more than a late first rounder. We got robbed purely because $cully was worth 2 first rounders even though Stevie Wonder could see he is inferior to Ward. That said I'd rather be a club like Hawthorn being successful anyway instead of a team trying to get there themselves.

The whole compensation thing is not worth the trouble, we had enough issues from the expansion teams compromising so many drafts. We had the worst time to bottom out, because we haven't been able to rebuild as quickly as other clubs normally could. Not only did we lose players critical to us going forward that already had years in the system (Ward is great, Harbrow is under-rated. We haven't been able to replace him), we had to suffer with lower picks while the expansion teams did what they liked. For me, those compensation picks need to be cancelled ASAP.

Screw free agency, if anything allow the clubs a bit of extra cap to pay the veterans more for less years on a contract. The draft needs to go back to last getting #1 & first getting #18, let trading up happen to be any different. Let's say a club needs a KPP & holds pick 10 - there are 5 that stand out & will go 1-10. Player A leaves his club, who is compensated with pick 10 as they already had pick 9. Theoretically the club that gets pushed back a pick now has to try & trade up, sacrificing another part of their progress in order to get one of the 5 they were keen to grab. They would feel robbed, and rightly so. The only team that wins in the situation is who got the established player & didn't have to give much/anything to get them, usually a club in a powerful position anyway.

All this talk of equalisation and there's a system in place where the rich get richer & the poor get poorer.

50/50 split as to whether we sell the farm for McCartin or just take pick 6. Prefer to trade 6 down for 2 top 20 picks and have 5 picks inside 30 that we can either use at the draft or trade 1 or 2.

The only issue i see is we still need to fill 6 spots on our list that is counting Cordy and Jong coming in we still need 6 players

Feel like I'm waiting for Christmas Day. The Dogs are cooking something up, I can feel it in my waters.

Can see all the anti-BMacs converting to Saint Brendanism in 2 weeks... :)

We all felt the same way about Jack Martin.

And got duly trumped by Gold Coast/Melbourne.

I'm yet to be convinced we can get it done. Surprise me, Dogs.

Just keep our picks, if they wont take 6 and 26 then forget it. we wont be giving them any players. We trust in our development. The secret to our recent drafting success is not picking the 'best' players as others do and indeed we once did. It is choosing quality players that fit best within our development system, this is why our 1st and 2nd round picks have thrived. I am under no illusion that macrae, bonti , hrovat or stinger would have developed the same elsewhere. We trust in ourselves and give everyone else the middle finger. it is clear we have no friend or favor outside the kennel walls, so we should act accordingly.

Can't blame Melb for the compensation for Frawley, I was more sickened by their shameless request for a priority pick TBH.

Well, they could at least try not to be shit for a while......

I think with Melbourne getting this pick, we need to go long term and head to the draft. They're going to peak around the same time as us, I'd hate to go down to them.

Can anyone clarify something for me... If we decide to play hardball and let liam Jones walk to the draft. Can we re draft him? Even against his will?

I know I've said it numerous times that I can't see us trading any father son players but would anyone here be disappointed if we did go Wallis and 6 for 3? I know facebook page is ridiculous but mentioned dees have inquired about Dahlhaus and Wallis.

Not much difference between the Frawley result and a priority pick. Melbourne knew it was coming. That's why they stopped the media circus around it and dropped the subject.
