Massive if English has signed on. Surely the $700k figures bring thrown around by some media are off the mark though?
Looks like guesswork not based on anything. But what do you think he’s worth? It’s a tough one to put my finger on imo as he’s obviously very valuable but at the same time he’s put together what, 4 good games of footy? Maybe not even as he got smashed against the Blues. A 2 year deal rather than long term probably best for everyone at this stage

I’d rather sign him long-term. He’s going to be our number one ruck from here on out and will only get better.

Maybe I’m a bit out of touch. Just worry if he gets $700k, what will Baz ask for
Don't think Baz would get more, he's been great this year but still has a lot to work on in terms of kicking and such. Dale is the same, doing silly things with the ball. All of them, the 2 mentioned, Daniel, Macca etc really need to get back to basics and hit targets that are there. Stop with the 2m hight 45 deg bullets opposition just pick off.

That being said, there were more promising signs against Essendon where the team focused on doing the basic hard stuff. Hopefully they keep it going.

Baz will be asking for less than that. If you're wondering why, I'll give you a hint: why is gold worth more than silver?
Because it has more uses? Golden handshake, golden goose, golden point, golden opportunity etc. etc.
Are you saying something along the lines of ruckmen are a dime a dozen, but midfielders are rare as ?
Not sure I agree, especially where quality is concerned.

Am fine with 2 years for Tim, am wary of handing out long term deals to a ruck. Main thing is we will either have Tim long term or we have a few years to figure out our ruck plans when/if he leaves.

Huh? Tim English re-signs and people immediately start clutching at their pearls worrying about the other un-signed players.

No doubt Smith has some work to do on his disposal but I strongly disagree with your point on Dale, he's been outstanding. He takes calculated risks with his kicking but the benefits significantly outweigh the downside when they, rarely, don't pay off.

I could honestly see Tim being the best ruck in the comp two years from now and demanding 1mil+ on the open market as an unrestricted free agent. I'd be looking to lock him up for 5 years at 700k. I reckon we are more likely to be winners from that deal. Don't underestimate how hard it is to get an A-grade ruck. Some teams spend a decade or more trying.

I hope he is, but as recently as round 2 a spud like Marc Pittonet monstered him in the ruck. I hope he signs long term but not for Grundy money.

Grundy money is 900k to Million 700k isn't astronomical and he does his work around the ground and his tap work is improving

Spot on, like Daniel at his best they get one wrong every now and then and usually it results in a goal as they’re last line of defence and our defence has already moved forward - and people remember these. But geez that’s what they’re in the team to do and 95% of the time they hit

I wouldn't call Pittonet a spud. That's a pretty outdated view IMO. He's been okay for a couple of seasons now. He isn't great around the ground but he's a very big boy and his tap work is pretty good.

Pittonet is a good ruck. What Tim lacks in the hitouts, he more than makes up for with what he does around the ground. I reckon most coaches would agree with me and most bigfooty posters overvalue hitouts. So who is right? The size of Tim's next contract will tell us who the coaches agree with.

To get English on a 5yr contract, I suspect his management would be after more than 700 p.a.

How would people feel if a 750/800 p.a. contract eventuates over 5 years?

No issue. He’s probably going to be one of, if not the best ruckman in the comp within a few years so even $700-$800k will be unders. Especially when considering the salary cap will move upwards and big money deals are probably around the $1-$1.5m mark.

It couldn’t be better timing for us, for him to be out of contract. He’s about to hit career peak form, but not quiet at the stage where he can demand huge money, and at the exact stage where we can lock him in to a long term deal. Ok money, long term deal, career best form just around the corner.

It’s a massive win for the club.

I'm more interested in who's on the table than who's staying
Normally yes but we probably have 4 of the top 6 best available OOC players so to me the focus is on retention this year and the development of JUH and Darcy to fill in glaring gaps. If Darcy and JUH turn into starts then realistically we have plugged in all the key pillars to be a force for years to come
