Jamarra is the player that should switch back (thats if Bruce is to get back near to his best) if we were to switch a forward to the backline. I wouldn't switch proven forwards like Naughton and Bruce and to me Darcy doesn't have the mobility to play KPD and is more suited to the Rory Lobb role.

Jamarra could take off as the main interceptor (if we get our upfield pressure right).

And it would take all the pressure off him.And teach him to commit his body to the contest. He can always return to the forward line. But for now He can't be worse than the other defenders presently..

I am in the minority. I would like to see Astro back next season. One reason is I think he would be a star there but the main reason is I think he is going get a serious injury the way he launches for marks. I understand playing forward he has a license to fly for everything and he clutches some screamers and when he does it is exciting and can win games. Against this he is only going to grab a small percentage of these launches and often finishes on the ground or clutching knee, leg or ankle and the ball is rebounded.

If he plays back as a defender he cannot afford to many kamikaze leaps and end up on the ground. He either punches the ball or takes marks in a more conservative marking approach. I know this is seen as backward step by many but if does not work he can always go forward again. People forget it was an experiment to play him forward and it has not been a fail and needed at the time and in 2022 with no Bruce, a developing JUH and Sam yet to play.

It is a backwards step.

The club has stated that even if we end up with Lobb he won't be going to the back line. That is from Chris Grant, so no need to talk about it.

The fact he is banged up is a product of how we enter the forward 50m with no space which needs to change.

On a side note, and I hate speaking I'll of the dead, but with Noble stepping down I reckon this would be the time to approach Ben Mackay. Offer some stability and a guaranteed role along with decent (but not over the top) coin and who knows. They will likely want a first for him and if Dunks goes, we can possibly split that for a couple of later ones and use one of those with the other to be used in negotiations with Freo.
As much as I wouldn't want to loose Dunks, if that turned into Lobb and Mackay I would be actually pleased.

Why is there suggesting that Hunter is out? Where is that coming from?
Been whispers about it all year on a few different fronts, club not happy with his conduct off the field, rumors of drug/booze use again, nothing even remotely substantiated but seems that those ''in the know'' reckon he might be looking for a club-change next year.

as with everything, grain of salt.

I don't want to see Hunter go, at his best his one of the best wingers in the league.

In a fantasy land far far away (but more realistic than my Barrass dream last week) ...

Trades:

  • Trade 1: WBD 2023 2nd Rounder traded to Gold Coast for Pick #34 + Pick #44
  • Trade 2: WBD Pick #27 + Pick #34 + Pick #37 + Pick #44 trade to Brisbane for Pick #15 + Jack Payne
  • Trade 3: WBD Pick #15 to Fremantle for Griffin Logue
Summary:
  • Effectively traded Pick #27 + Pick #37 + Future 2nd for Jack Payne and Griffin Logue
  • Assumes we have the cap space available from Dunkley leaving and haven't lined up Ben McKay as a FA for the following year
  • Leaves us with Pick #9 plus whatever we get for Dunkley - possibly allowing us to trade up to get Busslinger (just gone in for shoulder surgery)
==/==

Trade 1 Comments:
  • Based on current ladder position repeating in 2023 this represents a 201 points premium in our favour
  • Smaller premium than we got trading Pick #23 to Geelong last year for Pick 32 + Pick 34 (311 point premium)
  • Smaller premium than Collingwood got for trading Pick #27 last year to Richmond for Pick 38 + Pick 40 + Future 3rd
  • Possibly we can get Pick #31 + Pick #44 from Gold Coast or get Pick #49 as well but smaller points premium probably makes sense in the context that Gold Coast will expect us to improve next year.
Trade 2 Comments:
  • Pick #15 is worth 1,112 points and applying a 50% premium (we got a 49% points premium trading Pick #17 last year) is 1,668 points
  • Combined picks traded to Brisbane are equal to 2,090 points so I see this as 422 points (pick #40) for Jack Payne if valuing pick 15 at a 50% premium
  • Along with Brisbane's picks #33, #43 and #69 they have enough points to match bids on Ashcroft at pick #1 and Fletcher at pick #22 (actually a bit earlier given the picks not used matching Ashcroft will move up 3-4 places each). They could also extract some additional points out of pick #27 if needed but need to manage list spots.
Trade 3 Comments:
  • Fremantle will posture that Pick #9 (or what we get for Dunks) needs to be involved but if Logue wants to leave I think Pick #15 get it done.
  • Surely with Pick #15, their Pick #16 and Rory Lobb they can find a way to land Luke Jackson.

Thoughts on Dunks and pick 9? To Essendon for Pick 3 and Cody Brand.
Offer up our future first to Freo for Logue and Lobb (would need to throw in steak knives as well I'd imagine, possibly 2022 third rounder?).
Use 3 on Busslinger at draft.

Essentially would be -
Out: Dunkley, 2022 first, 2023 first, steak knives.
In: Busslinger, Brand, Logue and Lobb.

Would hopefully set up our KPDs for a decade, and with our forward stocks looking to be Marra, Naughts and Darcy/English, we'd be well on our way to a more balanced squad imo.

The challenge is Essendon have pick #3 at the moment but are only 7% away from pick #6 and still play teams currently 11th, 6th, 18th, 16th, 12th and 8th on the ladder while we have a very difficult run-in. Our picks could end up a lot closer (appreciate that I’ve also just done a big hypothetical based on the current ladder).

I’m also not sure Brand is enough. Would want to swap 2nds as well.

Pretty good. Freo would need much more though. They’d want a 1st just for Logue.
