Would be very disappointed if we were to lose Dunkley or Hunter.

Everything that could gone wrong for us this year has. We just need to change the coaching set up and get a key defender.

We can’t lose Dunkley. Liber isn’t going to be around forever (as much as we all want him to).

Joel Hamling is the one for me. We all know how good he can be. Playing two’s in Fremantle. Moved back home to be closer with his dad who was sick and sadly has passed away.

I wonder if he’d be interested in coming back?

We’ve got the foundation of a great team. Even our young kids. English, Naughton, Weightman, Smith, West, Darcy, JUH. The young talent is there.

I’d be pretty keen to throw Darcy in the deep end and play him down back in the last few rounds.

30 next year. Depends on his body and if it’s okay or not. I don’t exactly back out medical team like a Brisbane Lions.

Left field - what about bringing in Phil Davis for a year or two?

Dunkley’s obviously going to get picked every week but he’s the only player on the list who surplus to an area of the ground. Because of the 6 main midfielders there’s no one else that goes through there for a change up or who might develop into a good option in there who has a different strength. Clearly the side would be better off with a genuine key defender than Dunkley if that’s the choice.

Cooked & cooker

I love Toby but prior to his ACLs he hadn't contributed to the midfield consistently for quite some time. 2018 was a stand out but 2019 and then 2020 were very patchy.
We've added Treloar and Bailey Smith since that time too.
I don't think he's a lock.

Liam Jones for me, was his exit from the Dogs amicable? He would be cheap and we could still try and get Logue.

Not amicable at all, but the reason (B-Mac) is no longer there.

I'm actually comfortable with signing more than one KPD. I'd seriously ask about Josh Walker - good size, probably has two years left, would cost very little.

We can target a gun defender and a solid journeyman like Walker as well. Keath won't be able to stay on the park for 22 weeks next year.

I think it became clear during those seasons that he’s a midfielder first (and a pretty good one).
I actually thought he was showing some good signs of having adapted to the new role prior to the first ACL and in the short run he had inbetween, but he definitely does his best work as a mid.

I’ve always loved him in the forward line, adds some X factor but don’t know if you can play both he and Cody in there if their pressure isn’t at 100%.

With such a high emphasis on winning the ball back from intercepts and turnover let's have a look at the top intercept possession players in the comp.

1. Sam Taylor (pick 28), 2. James Sicily (pick 46), 3. Tom Doedee (Pick 17) 4. Angus Brayshaw (Pick 3) 5. Charlie Ballard / Patrick McCartin Pick (42/DFA) 7. Tom Stewart (Pick 40), 8. Sam Collins (Pick 55/DFA), 9. Adam Saad (Rookie Selection), 10. Issac Quaynor (pick 13).

Very little top end talent (high draft picks, Huge trade capital) amongst those players. You add up the entire top 25 and you get 3 top 10 selections (Brayshaw, Moore and McCartin). One of those is a failed forward/concussion issues that was picked up for nothing and one of the others is a mid who was squeezed out of a dominant midfield.

You just don't spend great amounts of resources on this area of the park. You can find a very capable back six with later/smart selections and trades, as well as capable game plan and defensive tactics. Our biggest problem is the latter.

This is why Naughton to defence or Darcy to defence is just not required. Fix the upfield zone, get some smart trades/lateish selections and maybe even a failed forward switched to defence. Sam Weiderman might be someone who could be utilized back and revitalised.

Anyone catch the tom rockliff news that grundy could be traded? If good it probably means port are after a ruck desperately. Not sure how they can get grundy and dunkley.
