Honestly since we got JOD consolidating our tall defender stocks, if I could magically procure a player in any position to help us right now it’s probably small forward. With love to Cody and AJ they just aren’t producing (can’t fault their forward pressure though). Scott is far less athletic than either of those two but is regularly kicking goals by knowing where to be.

The risk is you end up with Cavarra v2 so I wouldn’t take a small fwd just for the sake of it, but we really need to unlock our forward line somehow. Or at least put some more pressure on that position.

We desperately need an intercept marking defender, Marty Hore may be in the frame. Similar size to Doedee who we've flagged interest in
We need one of quality (I think Buss will fill that void in time). I’m unconvinced that Hore or any of the other options are that much better than Crozier or O’Brien tbh. Hore is 27 and an AFL discard, how much better can he get?

I feel the same way BUT Hore was really good in his first season at Melbourne but then injuries took hold.

Whether we back our medical and conditioning staff on this..

On current performance he is ahead of both at VFL level, the question is whether he can learn our system quickly enough to transition this season. It's why we tend to favour Footscray VFL types.

We may very well trial Mannaugh (apologies for spelling) anyway. Probably slots into McNeill's spot and given the roundabout of players we've tried there this season he would have the opportunity to nail it down

Just a hypothetical and I say it with the preface my desire is to retain English long term, however..

If Sean Darcy was made available this year would it be within the realms of possibility to consider the following:

WC gain: Tim English, Brisbane 2nd Round pick
WC lose: 2023 First rounder, 2023 third rounder

WB gain: Sean Darcy, WC 2023 First rounder
WB lose: Tim English, WB 2023 first rounder, BL 2nd round pick

FR gain: WB First round pick, WC third round pick
FR lose: Sean Darcy
We're making out like bandits there, surely. It would take a lot more for WC to give up Reid I'd expect.

Is there a final mid-season draft order anywhere? i.e. with only teams that actually have a list spot
I did a google (well done me):

1. West Coast (Jai Culley inactive list)

2. North Melbourne* (Jack Mahony inactive list)

3. Hawthorn

4. Richmond (Jason Castagna retirement)

5. GWS (Darcy Jones inactive list)

6. Sydney (Sam Reid inactive list)

7. Geelong

8. Fremantle

9. Essendon

10. Western Bulldogs

11. Port Adelaide* (Mitch Georgiades inactive list)

Fox Footy article about the Mid-Season Draft.

The Western Bulldogs, like Fremantle, have a list spot open and aren’t expected to target a key-position player, but won’t select at Pick 10 if the players they like aren’t available. They have been linked to Hore and ex-Magpie Caleb Poulter, who’s averaged 18.1 disposals and 6.3 marks for the Bulldogs’ VFL side Footscray. Ball magnet Lachlan Sullivan, who’s been part of Footscray’s set-up for the past three seasons, would be another option after averaging 27.9 disposals, 7.5 clearances and 6.0 tackles for his side this season.

To be fair we recruited Cloke, Schache and Trengove (Utility) over 2016 and 2017 because we were trying to find a reliable forward target. Sometimes takes a few shots before you hit the target

Please not Sullivan.

Like no offense to the guy who is trying so hard to still get drafted but it's not much help to us.

It’s very strange the use of Karmis this season. He was showing signs of becoming a good intercept Defender and now we a trying to make him a forward where there is no spot available in our forward line

Same thing happened to Raak
Dogs development structure can really put players behind the eight ball

Is it that we prioritise versatility over what a player has been used to? Eg Naughton was a KPD when drafted and is now a 50 goal per year forward. Bailey Dale was a medium defender turned AA half back. Caleb Daniel a Dayne Zorko type mid/forward who turned AA defender etc etc.

It might not work for all players but seems to be something we do regularly and, on occasion, succeed with.

Maybe we've soured in Poulter after Roarke Smith has recovered from his injury. Was a bit uncertain for a while when he'd be fit.
