I come in peace guys, honestly just trying to figure this whole thing out.

We currently have pick 8, and are expecting at minimum a second round pick in the Esava trade. Depending on next week's result it could be 7 or even 6.

The popular belief on our board is that pick + whatever we get for Sav would be enough for Baz, just curious to hear what you guys think.
Yes I think that’s about right, but I’d much rather see us keep Smith with a new coach/game plan. His finals series in 2021 was insanely good

I’d much rather keep Baz but that is at least his current market value, probably higher. If he indicated he wanted to go, I think that would get it done.

I’d be surprised if Geelong offered that.

As a Cats fan I’d gladly offer that - Bailey is exactly what we need, a young accumulator who can run all day. Yes, I know he can’t kick, but we’ve watched Dangerfield for years so we’re used to it 😉

I’m a bit unsure as to whether there’s any truth to the rumours but surely you wouldn’t be pushing him out unless there were significant issues. As stacked as your midfield is now, Libba and Treloar are close to the end and Baz has a decade left.

That said, if there is some truth to it, better to trade him now instead of when he’s OOC in 12 months time.

Not sure if satire. That is way too much for Bailey Smith

I would certainly hope he’s not being pushed out. Presume he would only be let go if he tries to force it from his end. He has had a really down year but the 2021 finals weren’t that long ago and he was an absolute beast. There is no reason he can’t be consistently at that level.

Geelong, from the outside, very rarely overpay. Unlike Essendon with ridiculous stubbornness, Geelong find a price they think is fair and stick to it and last year showed that as much as anything. I think Henry and Bruhn were OOC which would be the difference I guess, maybe they’d be more relenting for someone in contract.

There is so much wrong with us it is hard to know where to start. I will try to list them in order without mentioning the coach because this is a player needs thread.

1. Pace in the midfield the third and the bottom team have just shown us how deficient we are here.
2. Depth our bottom 7 to 8 are far the worst in the comp.
3. Good decision makers
4. Players can hit targets.

Easy to fix just need to get in 5 to 6 A graders that is not going to happen.

It depends on what years you're looking at tbh.

We used to consistently overpay just to get deals done. Henderson and Touhy both going for FRP when OOC made our board furious at the time. Similar story with money, where we were forced to trade for Danger & Cameron purely due to our financial structure.

Those were the Wells years though, and as you mention Mackie has tightened things up a bit. As you say though, those deals have been for players OOC.

If we see ourselves jumping back into flag contention next year we're going to need at least one of Smith or Parish. Scott will know this, and I'd expect he'd be telling Mackie just do whatever it takes to get the deal done.

We've got 7 top 25 picks on our list since 2019, so we've got enough youth coming through. I wouldn't be surprised at all of we 'overpaid' for Smith, particularly as he's still young.

A few years ago I wish we went harder with getting quality in. After all, who wouldn’t love to play alongside someone like Bont?

Now we’ve left it too late to do anything like that, we need to turn over the list a lot starting from this season. 8-10 players, absolutely no problem.

Williams - ideally keep, but up to player
Khamis - extend
Poulter - extend
Raak - delist
Bedendo - delist/rookie
Crozier - delist
Sweet - ideally keep, but up to player
Bruce - delist/VFL/AFLW coach maybe
McNeil - delist
Hannan - delist
Rmith - delist
McComb - delist
Duryea - retire
O’Brien - delist, may be lucky and get 1yr if worried about depth
McLean - delist :(

What has Poulter done to extend? Very ordinary footballer easy to see why he was delisted

Cheap and has shown some promise, will be a bit inconsistent like any young player but enough to persevere with as we don’t have wingers coming out of our ears.

Geelong would be preparing to get Smith for 2025. Parish is their target this year. They would absolutely be planning for Smith and we should be worried. He is exactly what they need and the Cotton On link would 100% be used to help. They can take his image international. WTF can we do for him?

we need to hold firm and demand a high first rounder for Smith, entering his prime with runs on the board, not a great year but that happens.

my issue with him is he is not courageous, he picks and chooses. watch 11.15 to go in the second qtr today as an example, and there are many others

My issue with him is he kicks the footy like he’s never been asked to hit up a leading forward. It’s ballooned in the air like he has been taking lessons from Hunter, or it’s kicked way too hard over the forward’s head, or it’s a worm burner off his instep.

It’s baffling that a young footballer can play midfield for presumably ten years or so and kick the ball that badly.

He’s obviously low on confidence in other areas of his game as well now, hence the poor efforts.

On the basis of the last season and a half he’s a bog average mid. If he wasn’t as famous as he is, or played for a coach who had more selection integrity, then he’d have been playing VFL a while ago.

I do hope he stays and gets back to where he was a couple of years back. But I’m not optimistic and if we got offered something good we’d be foolish not to at least consider it.

What do we do about Macrae? Still has elite hands inside but consensus appears to be that he’s too slow as a mid now. Do we just accept that he’s a high half forward and rotation for the midfield.

Same as what the Pies did with treloar. Admit we messed up and look to move him on.

Yeah there is 0 chance that is happening, ideally he moves to around 50% time in the centre, this year averaging around 35% and in the 2019-2021 period it was closer to 80%. His numbers when in the centre this year are still reasonably good, averaging more centre clerances per CBA than Treloar, Smith and Daniel and just about equal with Libba.

We'll get a better idea of where he's at in the early rounds of next year.

Baz was a top 10 draft pick, that we have put years of development into. His game against Brisbane in the final shows what he is capable of doing. Baz needs a fresh coach, the same as all the players who look down in confidence.

Also with Baz’s mental health issues, he not going to a one team town like Geelong. Besides it’s about time Geelong drafted and developed their own players instead of piggybacking on other clubs hard work.

Raak has been pretty good moving fwd second half of the year. Has great hands. I’d like him to build his take and try on the wing.
Also McNeil is still young I’d hold him another year or two.
A lot of fringe players look bereft of confidence. The game at this level is between the ears also.
We need some positivity and belief.

Both players you named should’ve been delisted a year ago.

Wouldn’t be against trading English provided we can get a proper ruck in. Guys 27 next year and still soft as butter despite his size.
Very real possibility that next season our two rucks on the list are Lobb and Darcy

20 & 21 yrs of age. Pathetic comment. Both are developing. Plenty of players are not drafted at 18/19 and all players develop at different rates. Can understand if you want the older guys gone they have had opportunities.
