Feel like Ballard should be the higher priority rather than the back up.
Ballard comes into it if the First Rounder rules change this off season
Its expected to change but AFL can do AFL things

I've seen Rayner break games open, like when he was best on ground when Brisbane thrashed Melbourne earlier this year.

Consistency is the issue - not within games, but across games. He's had far too many games of footy where he's just had the seven kicks or whatever for the entre game, despite proving numerous times that he's capable of BOG games that a number 1 pick should be.

There are flaws youd back a player to improve on and others not so much - poor decision making, intensity or kicking, its usually something that doesnt get any better. Consistency though - thats something you can work on.

If we can land Stengle esp as a UFA, imagine a forwardline of
West, Darcy, Stengle
Weightman, Naughton, Jamarra.
I was going to suggest whoever is top of the GA table. So I went and had a look at the table. There's some bloke called Marcus something or other, an Italian name I think, who has 19 GAs. If he's not gettable then maybe some one else on that list.

So Stengle could be good (11 GAs, 27 goals) but what would we have to pay him? The other Geelong bloke I like who would complement our forwards would be Gryan Miers (13 GAs, 11 goals). I have no idea if he's gettable though, or what he'd cost. But that's the type of player we should be looking for.

Looking at that forward line I can't see why we wouldn't just draft/develop one ourselves and spend our chips elsewhere. The forward line is probably the least of our problems. If we get another gun small forward in, it just makes it harder to fit all our midfielders in. I can't see why players like Harmes, Gallagher, Vandermeer, Garcia and Baker can't somehow fill that extra position (or two positions, if you count one extra on the bench).

And that's assuming that none of Clarke, Arty, Rypstra and Bedendo make it which is likely but not yet 100% certain. Even McNeil can fill in from time to time ... but I think I've made up my mind about him now. He'd need to show an unusual amount of mid-career improvement to stay on our list long term.

Scares all of us I think. Players I'd look at personally would be Borlase, battle and Caleb Graham.

I appreciate I'm not the best with words, I also use big footy on my phone and technology isn't my strong suit but I'm only sharing what i was told by a friend on Saturday morning at the VFL, I trust fully in what he has told me as he has never steered me wrong in the past and is close enough to the situation to know what's going on. I appreciate though that others have heard differently and that is fine.
Classy response, well done. The 99.9 % of us really appreciate your insight and posts. Thankyou.

I think Rayner would flourish with a fresh start in a new environment.

Know a lot of people wouldn’t be keen but I’d be happy to take a chance on him.
I've always liked Rayner. Has a bit of campaigner about him, amongst other things.

You watch that game v. Melbourne earlier this year and Rayner was an absolute monster in the middle. Then he goes missing for two weeks.
I don't think he has gotten a consistent crack at the midfield. I haven't looked at his CBA's but from my eye they'll give him one or two weeks of midfield time then leave him in the forwardline for a month.
He is the type of player I feel like needs to have atleast one or two CBA's a quarter to keep him up and about, it is a lonely position when you're up forward for a team having a rough night. I also think he has the potential to role up onto the wing.
If I were picking my team he would replace VDM at high half forward, can replace the running whilst also adding X-Factor and a more trust worthy disposal.

Rayner is a flashier West. Similar roles and output. I would prefer a pacier player as the third small next to Weightman and West. Really just an upgrade on Vandermeer. Of the players we have, that could be Garcia.

Kai Lohman would have been a great get for us. Not sure why some people were against that last year.

Toby Bedford would have been a handy acquisition. We were never a chance at him though but that type of player would round out our forward mix

Ainsworth would be ideal but there's no rumors of dogs looking at him.

I think that's why we drafted O'Driscoll and then took a punt on Rypstra.

Understand the need for tall defender depth over the next couple of years as LJizz and Keath near the end, but I am still bullish on our developing players in this area.

JOD is already a good tall back and has plenty of upside.

Buss has the makings of a solid contributor.

Once Croft's body is ready, has the tools to be an outstanding kpd. Love his competitiveness.

If all re-sign, reckon they are potentially a terrific tall defensive unit.
I like all 3 but I think all 3 would benefit from having an out and out stopper/beast type next to them. Not many around unfortunately.
