Agreed. When was the last time a big or even semi big name player requested a trade to us? Last one I can think of was Akermanis and that was 15 years ago. It's pathetic really.

Treloar has been pretty good for us. He’s probably the best player we’ve been able to trade for certainly in the modern era.

Don’t really count Hall and aker considering how late it was in their careers.

That is incredible young talent recruiting.

Charlie, Dunks and Neale were all acquired as established very good players in their young prime. Daniher and McCarthy were known to be good but had injury histories.


When the hell have we been able to recruit a young, known to be very good player? The closest I can think of is Crameri. Despite a decade of saying we want to become a destination club

They weren’t recruited just on the back of how good they were they were recruited to play a role and address an area of need.

What we lack clarity of what we need and how that role looks.

Lobb, Keath, Bruce and Jones have all been area of need recruits so your point is a bit meh. Just so happens they’re all old recruits.

Treloar was a semi salary dump we’re now about to pay for

Boyd wasn’t best 22 at his club and only was for us for about 6 weeks. Risked everything for that recruit.

Just so sad. It would be transformative if we got just one or two prime age high quality players over the last 3-4 years but we haven’t managed it

Interesting watching the importance of small forwards. It’s like we missed the trend and went hard at skinny jeans (talls) when the fashion is now baggy!

Collingwood have: Elliott, Hill, Ginnivan, McCreary and DeGoey plays mobile

Brisbane have: Cameron, McCarthy, Bailey, AhChe and Rainer is super mobile

I don't think we're ever going to be able to compete with clubs like Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Richmond when it comes to attracting premium talent.
The lure of big crowds at the g and coterie group sponsorships outside the cap are hard to resist.
Smaller Melbourne clubs like us, St Kilda and North Melbourne have to offer significantly more money to compete.
I think we will always have to draft our high end talent and then use trades to supplement positions of need which we have done pretty well.
