AFLW Trade, Draft and list changes 2024

The point about players wanting to go to a club they support is garbage….if that’s how they feel well then **** off and choose a suburban club

It’s AFLW …..the premier comp for footy ffs …not some bullshit school comp

Sugar Johnson says hello.

Ended up captaining our club.

Craven was around the same pick numbers as Stella but slid as the draft approached. To be honest she has been a slow burn and prior to this year I pretty much felt she was a bust. Stella was definitely ahead of her early days into their careers.
Tess Craven played first game of her first season didn’t play for the rest of that year.
Has missed two games since.
She won the BnF for the Geelong falcons in her draft year.
I understand it was first year back from Covid lockdowns and maybe we didn’t have alotve history on players but this is Paul Corrigan her coach at Geelong falcons.
He’s now the development coach at the bombers.

PAUL CORRIGAN ON:

TESS CRAVEN – DRYSDALE

“She’s just a natural footballer. Since I first laid eyes on her at training, I just knew she had that real potential as a footballer as we got through the pre-season and into the season. Playing that onball position, she’s just a class act with ball in hand, makes good decisions, and works really hard; she covers the ground really well. And I think her kicking efficiency and disposal efficiency is a real key to her game. I think she’s got the talent to go top 10. I think she’ll make a real impact in AFLW.”

Reid didn’t have the pace to compete.
That should have been identified.

I really think we are still paying the price for heading off in the wrong direction with the inaugural team and having to reset. The impact of the lockdowns then other teams coming in with draft concessions.
We got Yassir from trading Fredrick to the pies and she has been an investment that was paying off, maybe the only one from the draft so far.
We need more talent.

We actually recruited pretty well getting in likes of Brennan and conti , we were t granted the luxury of extended priority pics for 2 more years like ess and haw were which has meant we have always lacked a core of young emerging talent , perhaps this is somewhat of a chance to re write that

POPPY SCHOLZ

It's looking like the top end for Scholz, but just where she ends up isn't clear. Sydney and Carlton have both been linked – the Blues delisted key back Gen Lawson-Tavan, who played 10 games this year. If Fish goes to the Blues at five, Scholz could slide to Geelong or Richmond at 9/10.

SIERRA GRIEVES

In any other draft, she'd be in the top three, but it's looking like Grieves could be an absolute steal. The Western Bulldogs love a local girl, but with a new list manager in charge, clubs have been struggling to get a read on what direction they'll go. The Bombers are keen on some speed at eight, while Geelong (nine) and Richmond (10) and the Bombers again at 11 are likely to pounce if available.

ALEXIS GREGOR
A lot of clubs are keen on Gregor in the 10-20 mark, with Richmond, Fremantle and Geelong all being tied to the Pioneer
, more so for her defensive potential than forward prowess.

Paige Scott, Essendon AFLW. The self-delisting wildcard of the draft, it remains to be seen if the other 17 clubs will allow the dynamic forward to slide to Richmond at 31, having been in negotiations to go to Punt Road in the trade period.

OUR DRAFT PICKS: 10, 18, 31, 56

Options for pick 56 (opened up by delisting Stella Reid) are either take a player, or pass and fill that list spot by the supplementary selection period.
The Supplementary Selection Period will run from 12pm (AEDT) Monday 3rd February 2025 until 2pm (AEDT) on Friday 28th February 2025. Within that Period, Clubs will be permitted to select and advise the AFL of their final Primary Listed player.
  • Within that Period, Clubs will be permitted to select and advise the AFL of their final Primary Listed player.
  • Clubs can select players from within their own State or from another State (or overseas), with the player needing to agree to sign.
• Only players who nominated for the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft are eligible to be signed.

GWS did this last year and added irishwoman Eilish O'Dowd, who ended up their first ruck.

with reid departing and us already having given the flick to molan long ago, can we just draft players that don't run like an uncoordinated person running through mud? or players that don't lack intensity when they run/play? who cares if a player is slightly more skilled if they get beat to the ball or in the contest

FIRST PICK:
Pick 10

While Pick 10 will certainly get pushed back a couple of spots due to bids, the Tigers will bring in an elite talent to add to its list. The Tigers might look long and hard at Western Jets star midfielder and Vic Metro MVP Sierra Grieves who will support the likes of Monique Conti and Ellie McKenzie on the inside. She is a natural ball-winner and superb around clearances.

Another consideration might be Oakleigh premiership skipper Sienna Tallariti to provide some rebound out of defence. A future captain of any club she goes to, Tallariti will immediately slot into any back 50 and add composure and sublime footskills to the transitional plays. A taller option could be Eastern Ranges’ Grace Belloni or the upside of ruck/forward/onballer Elli Symonds who are all around the mark.

REMAINING CROP:
Picks 18, 31, 56, 59

Pick 18 guarantees another quality player to walk into the program, and if any of the above were there, they would be strong cases. Belloni might be the most likely, so too Oakleigh midfielder Sarah Poustie or explosive tall midfielder Zoe Hargreaves who boasts similar traits to McKenzie, while being able to play on all three lines. Another option could be the athletic cross-coder Lavinia Cox who has a wide draft range.

Richmond currently has the four list spots, so might only end on 56 – perhaps passing and leaving a spot open for players to train, but will make a minimum third pick at 31. Rebounding defenders Taya Chambers and Esther Schirmer might come into the mix, but it is impossible not to link Holly Egan to Punt Road, with her sister Grace currently on the Tigers’ list.

KEY QUESTIONS:

– Will Richmond look to add another defender or midfielder to the list at Pick 10?
– Could the Egan sisters meet again at AFLW level?
– What will the Tigers do regarding their fourth pick, and would they look at a fifth selection with another list change?

is there a kelly twomey of the aflw draft or is it a no spoilers typa draft?

i guess this year is the first full national one so who knows how it'll factor
No Cal, or Kelly, yet. More a stab in the dark from AFLW media spread to thin to get anywhere near predicting top 5 let alone first round. They'll just be casual observers like us as it all plays out Monday night.

Was she I didn’t think her vflw form was ever overwhelming
She was OK at Port when she played, often at CHF. But you wouldn't say overwhelming in four games, averaging about 14 disposals, a goal a game in just 4 matches in 2024.

Sarah Black is pretty good

Think we have said to Paige Scott we'll take her if she's there at 31 - hence the nom for the Draft. Hope it's nothing silly like using 18.....

i know her i meant more in the sense of a very accurate* phantom draft before the draft, i shoulda been more clear

*mainly top 10

Sarah Black has suggested the likely order, but with degrees of choice by Clubs still to be completely determined:

Ash Centra

Molly O'Hehir

Havana Harris

Grace Belloni

India Rasheed

Zippy Fish

Poppy Scholz

Lucia Painter

Sierra Grieves

Sara Howley

Sarah Black knows the lay of the land better then most journo's, and her and a couple of others are suggesting that the topmost talent are grouped in 7-8 players, and then another group of 7-8 players who any of could push up and be selected in the top 10. After pick 15 there are still quality players available and some depth to this group but hard to pick as more needs based.

for e.g her top 10 a couple of weeks ago wouldn't have had either Grace Belloni or Poppy Scholz but there must be whispers and things like an invite to the draft that could see taller utilities, and not pure mids as mainly previously thought.

I think that Stan Judkins said this earlier, a top mid sliding to us could be possible because of talls being taken here, and as Sarah Black suggests Sierra Grieves (5 -8 range) could be the one to fall out to our pick as the smallest midfielder at 163cm.

Yes, Sarah doesn't get the respect she deserves -it's probably gender and looks, which is unfair. I mean, look how Stanley ( Stan Judkins ) looks, yet we still respect him:tearsofjoy:

Looked at like 6 videos yesterday, only 3 around our first pick (scholz & grieves), and 3 around our second according to the rookieme phantom draft, and my initial thoughts are that I'm praying that scholz goes before our first pick lmao

grieves will be a gun and I like ridewood at our second

obviously neither are talls but what can ya do

dream first pick would be howley but being a falcons girl there's no way she even gets passed geelong right before us if she even makes it that far

sadly there's a good chance grieves and howley are gone before our first
