I seem to recall there were similar thought patterns about Brad Hill.
Posters weren't impressed with his football performances and believed he only went so high because of his combine testing.
That doesn't necessarily mean that Rioli will jump out of the box in an AFL environment, simply, that sometimes these factors are difficult to determine.

I think its because he'll be primarily a small forward and straight line pace will only get you so far in that position.
His "bag of tricks" looks limited, I think he'll get found out.

Thoughts on clint hinchliffe as a late pick, rookie? Doesnt get talked about at all and then an article in the paper. Averaged 25 touches 4 tackles and 1 and half goals. I think hes one of those pure footballers without the athleticism at this stage. Could wnd up like a priddis, tough nut but he has a serious boot on him (from the little ive seen of under 18 champ games)

A list of draftees I want before Rioli - (ones we actually have a shot at getting)

Lovell
Partington
Clarke
Cuningham
Dunkley
Fiorini
Morgan
Himmelberg
Parsons
Agius

Basically I just don't think he'll make it at AFL I suppose.
Agree with most of this - I'd be happy with us grabbing most of these players. Not sure we'd have much use for Himmelberg though (Darling + Lamb are better) - Freo will likely bid on him before us anyway. Dunkley did nominate (smart move), so he is back on my list. I'd add Cole to the list.

Because our first two picks are quite close I think the quality available will be similar for both. So we can take a risk with one or the other. Rioli is worth a risk imo (because we don't have that kind of a player on our list) but would have to be taken with our first. But we would still likely pick up a solid player of similar quality to what we could have taken with our 1st at our 2nd.

I'd grab him as a rookie - not sure he'll make it in AFL but that's what rookie spots are for aren't they? He certainly wouldn't fit in to my thinking for our 3 live picks in the ND. With our current coaching and strong player role-models I think we have a very high chance of having all three of the players we pick make it at AFL level (even if we pick Rioli).

Not only have the other clubs been quicker at unveiling of their new recruits than us , they have started assigning them numbers already. still waiting for reddens and jetta's presser.

Remember we played in a GF. Players get 6 weeks break prior to coming back for preseason so the Hawks and Eagles will be the last clubs to commence preseason.

I'd suggest the intro to new players, issuing numbers etc will happen at the start of preseason when the players are back. It will also be post draft will all the new recruits.

Its pretty logical really. Also the successful teams need to let the teams that are struggling to get a bit more exposure in the media. Those teams will be pushing for more media exposure to help lift memberships, keep sponsors out there. I think the top four clubs don't have those sort of pressures.

Brayden Hackett

Ht – 181 Wt - 67

Coming into the Champs I had heard nothing of Hackett and it took a couple of games for me to really pick up on him. It was when I saw him live that I realised how much of a gem this kid could be. He is an inside mid who is very undeveloped at the moment but managed to hold his own very nicely in a very undermanned WA midfield. WA had a few “names” in their midfield who were up for selection this year but Hackett outplayed every one of them.

I like his work around the clearances. He is always on the move and will fly in and attack the contests. He moves through traffic really nicely and has good clean hands. He has good spatial awareness in the clearances and pretty good body strength for such a slight frame. His hands are quick and he makes decent use of the ball when he wins it on the inside.

One of the things which impressed me live was how much ground he covered. He worked hard forward and back and was always around it and where he needed to be. He was working when other bigger names had stopped and let their heads drop. His defensive chase is good and he can create turnovers in the open field.

When he gets the ball in a bit of space he has some class about him and will take good options and hit them. He spreads pretty well and whilst he is not a ball magnet he gets enough of the ball. There will need to be a bit of work on his spread immediately after the contest. With that said he seems to have a good feel for the game and looks to be a natural footballer with a high football IQ. He will get out and bounce the ball when he has the chance and is a nice deliverer into 50. In the WAFL Colts he averaged 20 disposals, 4 tackles and 4 clearances a game. At the Champs he only got it 15 times per game but I do not think he was in the middle for all of the games he played.

I was a bit disappointed with his testing at the Combine. Not unexpectedly he tested very well in the 3km run (in the top 5 overall) at just over 13 minutes but the rest was pretty disappointing. He is a country boy and might not have trained for the testing like the others but I was expecting better. His beep was okay at 14.3 but again I did expect better. His 20m and agility testing were very disappointing for a guy who plays with reasonable pace and elusiveness.

Hackett is a player who I think could really blossom in an AFL environment if he can deal with the training load. He has a lot of natural talent and feel for the game and if he could get his physical attributes up to the level they could be I think he could easily be one of the best players to come out of this draft. The ceiling is very high for him but then so is the floor which I why he is so far down most mock drafts. He is physically behind most others, did not test well and has not shown the consistent great play making ability to make him a must draft. I would certainly be prepared to take a punt on him if I was picking about this stage but I could understand teams letting someone else take the risk.

Sounds like a rookie pick. Also sounds like a shorter Fyfe.:$ Skinny and underdeveloped which will mean he could slide a bit. Maybe the WA clubs have given him the nod and he backed off a bit at the combine. Then again if I was him I'd be going flat out tryng to impress every time I could.

Rioli is the ultimate massive win or epic fail player.

If he is as good as his blood lines suggest he could make a lot of recruiters look silly. He could also come to nothing.

He's lucky he's in this shallow draft. He will get picked but when.

I'd be rapt to take the risk with our 2nd pick which will be 36ish.

I like the best available option with our first pick, if Himmelberg is there (highly doubt as Freo are one before us), then I'd say take him.
We're pretty good when it comes to talls.

I don't rate Cole at all but that's just me I think.

Rioli with our 2nd I could live with but not over Lovell but he is this years love child for me.

I agree to a point, for mine it depends who is still left at our 2nd...Especially if it's Lovell or Partington, the others I could live with.
(I'd still like Agius too)

Strong over head for his size, clean hands, good balance, agility and pace.

Terrible bag of tricks

Agreed, he's good overhead for his size.
Clean touch is debatable and likes to lairise with the same two or three moves.

If we went for him, I'd like him developed for a wing type role not a small forward.

Last year there was a fair bit of talk about Jake Waterman, he seems to have dropped off the radar. Anyone know what happened there?
Played pretty well for both Claremont Colts and the WA U18 sides. Assuming he continues to develop, I expect we will go for him and expect it may cost us a 2nd rounder in 2016. His older brother's glandular fever has probably meant there is lesser interest in the Waterman name so happy to keep quiet. Jake looks more comfortable as a mid size forward than a midfielder.

whats his size currently, 193cm?. If he gains another 2-3cm's (possible as he's 17), he could be come a big key forward.

Game situation is way different to combine test.
In fact, I think very little of the whole combine test/results.

Looking over previous years, the list is uninspiring and means very little IMO.

Does it bode poorly for Jordan Matera as well?
I had hopes for Matera but does look very average .
