I miss Claw
Like a hole in the head , Oops

honestly how many times can you regurgitate the same old line , We have won 2 premierships and should have been 3 apart from dusty injury and the gastro
Yet our list structure's are wrong. WOW

FMD The same crap we have been listening to for the last 10 years

We have been going with 12/13 KPP/Ruck depending if you call Broad a tall the last 5 years and won 2 flags

yet somebody still wants a min 16 .............. used to be 18 10 years ago
The guy who destroyed 200cm hipwood? Yeah he is a tall.

Ive named how many talls??? IVE ASKED FOR HOW MANY talls and to the point specialist in their roles.Ive broken it down into what i see each player as it is the following.

4 KPD
4 KPF.
2 RUCK
2 RUCK/FWD
4 THIRD TALL TYPES

FMD ITS 16.Avery similar number to what it has always been.
A serious question who here thinks 16 is too many and the above is not a Mirror of the seniors.

Last point. If the club is not sure about Garthwaite and Miller should they not have another tall on the list. This is where im coming from. So instead of 16 its a whopping 17.

We have a total of what 46 SPOTS ON THE LIST??? Its agreed by all, talls take longer. Or is this just a fallacy.
So is 16 17 talls too many. Not imo its not.It really is a simple question and with just a modicum of common sense the answer smacks you in the face.
I hope you read this carefully and i would be happy for you to point out what POINTS are wrong.

How do we fit in 2 KPD/2 KPF/1 Ruck/1 Ruck/Forward/2 third tall types into 22 AFL spots without taking away our ability to run and spread that overwhelms the opposition?

How do we fit 2 KPD/2 KPF/1 Ruck/1 Ruck/Forward/2 third tall types into 23 VFL spots without hindering their development?

Over the last 3 seasons we've seen a lot of our players are being groomed to play second & third roles that they wouldn't have been asked to play a 3 years ago. We've seen small/mid sized forwards being groomed as small defenders and vice versa. We've seen KPDs being trialled in the VFL as KPFs & vice versa, we've also see our rucks being asked to play as KPFs at AFL level during preseason games. We've seen mid sized forward turn into defensive wingers & wingers turned into mid sized defenders and the list goes on.

The reason this is happening is to give us greater flexibility on game days to change things up when the game requires it either through injury or results not going as expected. Loading up the side with 8 talls takes away some of that flexibility and ability to change things up on the fly.

I fully expect the next evolution of our game plan to involve having 1 stay at home KPF(Lynch) & 2 ruck/forwards, when Jack retires, and both Soldo & Nankervis being replaced, which will give us even more ability to run and spread against the opposition. We've already seen how effective a similar type of set up works with a flexible back line set up, with the 1 genuine stopper KPD(Astbury), a couple of mobile 3rd tall types(Broad & Grimes), a strong intercepting mid sized option(Vlastuin) and fleet footed run & carry types in Houli Short & Baker. In 2020 Rance slots into Broads role but also gives the ability to play on a genuine KPF if the opposition has 2 options.

That is where overloading the list with 16+ talls starts to become an issue because you can't fit them all into the line up when they are all available. AFL is evolving into a game where the ability to run harder and longer than your opposition is going to be the key to being a successful side and IMO we're well ahead of the curve in developing the game style/structures/set ups that will suit that better than any other side.

In 2-3 years time I see a 22 with 1 genuine KPF(Lynch) 2 ruck/forwards(CCJ & Chol) 1 genuine stopper KPD(Garthwaite) with Balta down back playing the Rance role as the foundation of the side with 17 small/mid sized options running opponents ragged.

Improved in that area this year (coming from a very low base).

His finals and particularly GF performances were really good he won some important one on one contests deep in defence that saved potential goals.

Agreed though he can still improve further in that area if he’s going to become a regular AFL small defender.
Yeah just noticed in GF he hung back a little sometimes and needed make the contest.

Chris Yarran was an ice addict.

But yes, he was. I was thinking just the other day what could've been. He would have fit perfectly into our system. Shocking drug.
Balta has more potential so i'd rather the club put the effort into him. Why would the club introduce a guy on his last chance? I don't see the upside.

Cousins brought a $500,000 major sponsor to the club and thousands of extra memberships. Anyone who relates cousins to bennell is in error.

Pickett and stack are two different cases entirely compared with a known habitual drug user like bennell

I agree I didnt think we had a chance without Rance. We found a way i dont think it was ideal but it worked. Sort of in the same way it was never ideal to just have Riewoldt as a solo tall fwd yet we won a in 17.

On Houli im not worried if he goes or gets injured. His role is a role where we have a shedload of players knocking on the door.
His experience for sure would be missed but i for one am torn between him retiring and giving others a go in his role.

You almost seem disappointed that the club proved you wrong twice by winning a flag, because it didn't fit your player profile ideology..

RE: Houli, the bloke could have easily won 1 Norm Smith and made a very strong case for a 2nd one and you think he should either hang the boots up or be pushed aside immediately?

Wow.

How?!?
It's called Player Management in my Coaching manual and you have a whole Footy Season to experiment with the player combos to work out what works!

Not sure if this has been discussed but wasn't Bennell on Richmonds radar in 2015? he stayed at Dusty's house for a night, then went MIA and missed the medical the next day? Martin gave a giant thumbs down to the trade.

yes - rumour has it he was never interested in coming to us, just used us to negotiate with freo

Thanks, don't think we need reminding, it's ingrained in every ardent Richmond supporter's memory................................ ;)

I'm amazed hes even being discussed again.

I know right

he had his chance to be apart of a pretty amazing period for our club and he blew it

People are crazy to think he will even really come back will probably only play 10 more afl games if that

You don't see how a side that relies on the ability to run and spread longer than the opposition will be impacted by loading up with 8 talls.

A known habitual drug user? Are you sure about that? Ross Lyon has had nothing but praise for the way he conducted himself off field and on the training track @ Freo. That's like calling Pickett a habitual thief, who was probably on his last chance too - but without proving he was an elite talent @ the top level previously.

Getting Bennell wouldn't affect the 'effort' put into Balta. They're nothing alike.

Wow.
1 its going to be interesting how we manage the retirement of great players. It's a balancing act with delisting the chaff, and hopefully retaining all the talent.
2 as far as height profile goes. We could do with one more young KPD in the draft. And I feel that Nank Soldo is not the best combination. CJ getting games this year is important. Give him a 5 week block. We can also add height by playing Balta and RCD anywhere on the field. I hope Dimma keeps one eye on the flag this year. And the other on the future.
