I wouldn't say they are getting much bigger. Sandilands has retired. Grundy is the one of the current premium rucks and is 202cm. Big but not massive.

203cm according to Collingwood website and Footywire.

Gawn is 208cm. Witts is 208cm. Those are the 3 best ruckman in the AFL.

It's not the sole reason why they are good, but i think in this day and age it's become the new norm with KPP's being over 200cm and rucks getting bigger.

You were highlighting the above mentioned rucks heights, implying that their extra 1cm was the difference between them and Bailey.

It's 1cm between Bailey and Martin, who i pointed out wasn't a good tapman and on the way out of Brisbane after playing 2nd fiddle to Mcinerney.

It's not 1cm between Bailey and every other ruckman in the AFL.

Well gosh, you only mentioned a ruckman who shoulders the ruck on his own and is 199cm. And there are how many who 200cm? I mean what's 1cm after all?

Martin doesn't shoulder it on his own... Mcinenery is 204cm and partners him.

Am i speaking french? Seriously i will fight any person on this board.

I hope Freo offer two top 6 picks for Kelly but in all honestly he won't cost anywhere near that.
Yep agree - very few players are worth that on the trade table but hypothetically if Kelly chooses Freo, what is our contingency plan? Do we take our picks to the draft and try bring in a young midfielder, or should we continue to be active and try and beef up our midfield through trades?

As far as contingency plans go, if Kelly deal falls through I wouldn't mind having a look at his teammate Menegola. Had a down year this year but out of contract in 2020 and would be an instant upgrade on Masto

Height is even less relevant in stoppage contests. Darling regularly outbodies ruckmen in the forward 50.

True, but that's one specific situation.

Darling has one trick he likes to do and that's use his strong frame to nudge the oppo ruckman (who don't expect it), take possession from the throw in and have a flying shot on goal.

It's not like he gets off the ground or actually tries to tap the ball. It works a surprising amount of times.

Time for one of my "special" scenarios.

Gaff using his out clause and we trade him now.

Eagles get a pick low enough to guarantee getting Kelly in the draft Cats lose all leverage other than "can't we play nice". Feel that was lost last year by Wells.

So maximum Eagles pay is say pick 5 (Saints from Gaff trade) using that pick in the draft.

They offer the Cats 32 + 2020 1st. Cats say no way.

Ok then pick 22 + 2020 1st. Or we take him with pick 5 and keep all our other picks, Geelong lose Kelly for nothing.

Cats spit the dummy, take 22 and 2020 1st.

Eagles use 5 + 13 + 32 in this draft plus land Kelly.

Lose Gaff + 22 + 2020 1st.

WINNER!!!!!!!!!

5 + 13 lands us two gun mids, 5? + Robertson with 13 and 32 goes on best available.

Martin played 2nd fiddle?? He averaged 10 more hitouts.

You're not making much sense.

Sorry, Martin is just shy of 33 years of age and Brisbane have introduced 204cm Mcinerney to be his successor.

He's not playing 2nd fiddle just yet, well done. But his TOG% is decreasing and chances are next season will be his last.

Apologies for not explaining all of that sooner.

Not trying to be a smartarse and catch you out.

I will say though, I don't think William's height will be a major issue.
He might not be huge for a ruck, but he's very strong already and has a huge leap.

More importantly he seems to time his leaps very well in the CBD and uses his body well at ball ups and throw ins.

All good bruvz. I got carried away, my apologies. I watched the movie 47 Meters Down last night and i'm still a bit worked up 🤷‍♂️

My point, is that i believe the undersized ruckman days are over.

The Stefan Martin, Patrick Ryder, Mumford ageing types who got away with it a while back can't really compete properly anymore.

The new wave of English 205cm, Marshall 201 as well as Grundy, Witts, Gawn types would be tall order for 199cm Bailey Williams despite his athleticm.

He might hold his own against them for a game here or there like Nankervis does (even though he's also competing with 204cm Soldo), i just don't see why you'd ever choose that option. It happens more from necessity.

We are still contending next year so Gaff leaving now would hurt us big time.

Agreed about Gaff, but I don't see us contending TBH with Willie on the sidelines, Hickey performing 50% of the ruckwork, Masten gone (no one better to fill his shoes atm) and Kennedy getting another year slower. I also think we've been well and truly worked out by other clubs, and Simmo + co need to go back to the drawing board and draft us another winning formula like when "The Web" went obsolete.

FWIW I think we'll bubble along in the higher half of the 8 for a few years, but wont truly compete until we build a better midfield division + plan (please no more conceding stoppages, Simmo!).

The position I’m probably least worried about is ruck. We’ve shown that we can consistently find ruckman. Guns like Gardiner, cox and Nic Nat, to scrubs who played decent football for us, despite being generally crap elsewhere like, Seaby, Sinclair, vardy and hickey.

If we keep 13 wouldn’t be opposed to using on the wa u18 ruck if he’s around. Haven’t seen him but apparently he was AA

How tall is he though?

Naitanui is 201cm

Williams listed at 199cm and has a leap as good or better according to some

Two centimetres is about that space

He will need to bulk up a bit if he’s going to be a full time ruck option though which may impact his leap

Hi Keys, do you see him as a potential No.1 ruck or more likely to be a forward/ruck? Height not really being the issue for me, just more your gut feel. I realise things can change and he may be a forward/ruck while we have NN and then No.1 thereafter but from most comments I have read, I have assumed he will be our second ruck (forward/ruck).

Same Height as bailey...
1cm shorter than noncompetitive ruck hack Martin?

Ok gaiz, everyone settle down now.

Gonna have to start putting campaigners on the floor here 👊

Doubt we'll delist Brayshaw 💙💛

After moving on big 'orse Fraser, and likely experienced eagles Mutimer and Allen, i don't think we'd turf the other young WAFL leader.

Brayshaw consistently cracks in for the Beagles and is clearly very passionate about the club, as demonstrated when he leads the song in our wins.

Gets another year for mine. Whilst he probably won't forge out an AFL career with his athletic limitations, i don't mind giving him a 3rd season on the list on the back of his production and consistency at WAFL level. Perfect midfield depth to have if an inside mid goes down, he's not a list clogger just yet.

Bloke is a tackling machine, averaged 6.5 tackles and 23 touches a game. Had 12 tackles in their last final.

However both Hamish and Ainsworth are likely 2020 delist fodder unless they show something special next season.
Might not have to delist many next year with JK jetta schofield and hurn at the end

Masten and McInnes the only confirmed outs so far so we have a 38/4 list breakdown. Assuming no players are traded out at least 2 more senior players need to be moved on, most likely Mutimer and Mallen

Watson is likely to be upgraded to the senior list and hopefully a deal for Kelly is done which leaves us with 38/3 and no draft picks until our 2nd round (31) assuming we use 13 and 22 on Kelly. Two live picks would take us to 40/3

Getting very tight for both Achee and Brayshaw to be retained although they both offer more in 2020 than a player taken with pick 60+

Unless either Brooksby or Smith are cut we’d only have one rookie list spot to fill. With Masten gone I suspect we’ll retain Smith as a budget space guardian but Brooksby might not be so fortunate

Go to the draft with 2 main list spots and 2 rookie list spots and a 40/4 breakdown to accommodate Rioli. Makes for a pretty boring draft
You have to take 3 picks in the national draft minimum .

Rookie upgrades like watson would count but still need 3 senior list spots minimum going into the national draft
