It's hardly sensationalist to say a bloke who is 23 is going to look further afield perhaps after he finds himself in the reserve backup category again.
You reckon he is not champing at the bit to play AFL after 5 years, they all are. Why did CCJ leave and he is younger.

Of course Tarrant will be there rd.1. I just wish we had looked a bit harder for a player in a better age bracket.

There isn't much evidence miller and garthwaite are good enough.

If you get a 25 year old full back to replace astbury it costs draft assets with tarrant doesn't hopefully.

* Assuming Richmond don't get screwed with compo by the afl as per usual

For some reason the club isn't/wasn't prepared to up their offer to CCJ. I was surprised because I thought he was the next in line to play FF. It is what it is.

So either the cap is really tight or the club don't rate him. I can't give you more than that.

They may rate him but not 5 years and big money like the apparent norf offer

Yep Tarrant is the best low cost replacement for Astbury we could find. Bringing him in costs us nothing, allows us to use our bounty of picks. It really is having a crack whilst looking to the future.

Miller has every opportunity to still cement his spot. The fact he hasnt in 4 years suggests it might be unlikely but heres hoping he makes a go of it still.

Well it's a fair way out yet, clubs are still working out who's who. And I am sure they have up to a point.
Clubs are doing all this sort of background work years out. Ok you might get the odd one that comes out of nowhere but they rarely happen. Added in the cost of what thats going to cost us and i can see Tarrant was the best cheapest option that dosent affect our draft hand moving forward.

Im sure if Sam Taylor all of a sudden wants a move to Richmond and we have the $$$ available we have the draft capital we could make it work but reality is most of all this work has been done months, to years ago.

I feel we really need to land at least 1 quality inside mid from another club to have a fair crack at the flag in 2022. Its too much to ask for an 18 yo at pick 7 or 16 to shoulder the midfield deficiencies.

Starting to think Mitchell is the answer, but Im not totally comfortable with it.

Clearly a mid short.

Mitchell makes sense for him Richmond and hawthorn.

Not a big fan either but I can see it happening

Might be needed too trying to stay with the dogs and Melbourne midfield groups.

Dunkley would be good if still available

Just need a photoshop whiz to edit this accordingly

Even if for arguments sake we keep Miller and he manages to get 10 games this year and Tarrant nets us 15 games it’s a win

What about backing our own. It might take a year or two but always better. Reckon we need to build a group not picking up the pieces.

The best players are the club will be gone or near it by then... Window doesn't stay open forever.

People like me complained about prestia but that was an astute get

Yes in the short term that is the case. But like Geelong and their band aid fix you risk the chance of losing young players that might have been. Be is 33 years old next year, name one 33 year old recruit that has ever made a difference to a side.
After researching for about one minute I came up with James Podsiadly. He went from Geelong to Adelaide in 2014 aged 33. he played 21 games, took 41 contested marks ranked 4th in the AFL that year and kicked 26 goals. Pretty sure I could come up with more examples if I bothered to look for them.

Gez some here over reacting yeah Tarrant 32 , but his still in his prime hasn't slowed down look at highlights. For me it's a win he gives us instant cover to work with the back 6 and let Balta be 100% and good for the Biggie , and Miller.Miller will play games next year he aren't your just stopper defender.

Tarrant also allows us flexibility to draft a kid maybe later in our picks a key defender instead of going all out early.

Could be a case of ..
"OK OK! Besides the aqueduct, sanitation and the roads,......"

Issac Smith about the same age.

Reckon we were pretty desperate back then and right in the window. I was very pro Prestia, my main argument being what would all those players in their prime, Cotch/Martin/Edwards/Grimes etc. think if we said were were going to the draft, ie rebuild.

But I reckon those players have had their time and have to hand the batten over to the young group we have going. Ross finally gets a crack proper in the last game without all those names around, and was our best player against Hawks seasoned mids. Mitchell comes in and Ross goes out.

I think we need to build a group around Bolton, Balta, Stack etc and hopefully RCD, Ross, Dow maybe a few more plus a great draft hand. It might take a few years but they deserve their chance, get Mitchell have to give a first round pic. Maybe we can rise up from last year, we still have the cattle but we will need the young players to do it next year front and centre.

They finalise the list before pre-season training and everything.
Even if he is still with us I wouldn’t bank on him to play an entire season in an important role , he has still only played 1 AFL game
If still on the list 10 - 15 games would be a reasonable target for him

And your point is? What sport was he playing up until his AFL debut, umm football. Tarrant is in a much better position to be a more than capable footballer for us as he comes from an elite base. His extra experience can only enhance his chances. I am having real trouble understanding what your problem is with this trade. It covers us in a number of ways and the fact we are a bloody good team will aid Tarrant's transition. Tige's will be red hot again next season.

To me Brander is either a KPP or third tall possibly. If he is soft that's a problem. Dunno. As mobile as he is I think he just is not good enough to be a normal mid or wingman, maybe pigeon-holing was a issue at West Coast amongst other things. He would not be a normal mid anyway, not a Richo winger either

The question is can he toughen up and play stronger in a defensive or forward role eventually? Ideally he is the sort of guy it would be nice to get him on the supplementary list to see how he ticked before making a call.

If Brander is going to make RFC might be the place because we do not have enough of that type in terms of opportunity. He could be a effective mobile hybrid player. He just may need to find the right role and right team mix to suit his attributes. Looks versatile maybe West Coast with their established players did not suit him and his development

This is on the money. Also important to note that West Coast's gameplan is about as outside and soft as it gets so Brander's hard/scrappy side would hardly have been nurtured in that environment. What we do know is that we were right into him in 2017 when our chaos/scrappy brand of footy was beginning to bear fruit big time - to the point where we were prepared to use our first pick on him back then - in the same draft where Leppa came out and said we completely wrote Lochie O'Brien off because he wasn't hard enough. So that tells us that we at least had enough confidence back then that Brander would be hard enough in the right environment, whereas the likes of O'Brien wouldn't be at all. Like you said, if we can pick him up for cheap and give him a crack in his preferred position in our gameplan he could be an astute pickup especially when we've got zero coverage if JR8 goes down.

That's why we're getting Tarrant.

And Weideman.
