One thing with our older players that doesn’t get a mention is that they are getting a much longer off/pre season and will have a lot of injuries seen to.
Also, after the poor season I think that the lost hunger, it only need to be a couple of %, will return with interest.

are their whispers about weideman ? , i rate that kid , reckon it would be an astute move , more mobile than ccj and as good a mark, could combine well with lynch

I think Weiderman is not a good enough mover.

He is too short for the ruck so really need to make it as KPP.

think he might be too risky

Tarrant is a great pick up and replaces Astbury
i think we are a midfielder short to seriously contend. Cannot rely on Prestia, Cotch Lambo to play all season and the young ones are a bit raw
If we get a solid B+ grader in trade, it frees up cotch to play fwd a bit and perhaps have bursts in the middle

I agree we are a mid short.

Reckon we could coach that into him. Also think that it isn't as much of a weakness in our lineup given we aren't as much a contested side like the eagles.
Also, given his height and overhead marking, it means that we don't have to push Jack or Lynch up to the wing every kickout and have no-one forward if we mark it.

For what he would cost, I think we could do far worse.

Key could be his value.

I do not see Brander as a wingman. Too cumbersome for wing despite his movement, its all relative

He is almost like a tall that plays a little small for his height which really is not a good attribute possibly. So does he do enough in the air or is it simply a case of being pigeon-holed at West Coast? Has he been bluffed by West Coasts' situation/stocks?

He could be a bit of a inbetweener so his cost/value becomes critical.

He might be a bit of a hybrid, KPP/third tall or a very defined mid role at times only for his type.

So his value is his versatility, the role he could play and whether he could fit into RFC's player mix/set-up

Could he be a poor mans Bontempelli in terms of link play, not inside mid and support as a third tall/KPP?

This is on the money. Also important to note that West Coast's gameplan is about as outside and soft as it gets so Brander's hard/scrappy side would hardly have been nurtured in that environment. What we do know is that we were right into him in 2017 when our chaos/scrappy brand of footy was beginning to bear fruit big time - to the point where we were prepared to use our first pick on him back then - in the same draft where Leppa came out and said we completely wrote Lochie O'Brien off because he wasn't hard enough. So that tells us that we at least had enough confidence back then that Brander would be hard enough in the right environment, whereas the likes of O'Brien wouldn't be at all. Like you said, if we can pick him up for cheap and give him a crack in his preferred position in our gameplan he could be an astute pickup especially when we've got zero coverage if JR8 goes down.

Its an interesting take.

I have watched some of his highlights.

He does tackle so he is not a snowflake physically.

He really is a interesting case. I am a bit surprised west Coast got him in the first place in terms of need

You dont believe any of our young mids in Dow , RCD , Ross , Martyn , Hugo , Cumberland after another preseason has the ability to take the next step upto the level ? Also with 5 picks and most likely 2-3 mids any will show something ?

Im a bit more optimistic and believe we will have min 2-3 that will surprise

I'm not sold on ross, being able cut it with treloar bont prettraca Oliver etc.

Dow And rcd have a long way to go too.

I'm shaky on Richmond chasing a Mitchell type but you can see why they would want to add it to the mix.

I was in the treloar to Richmond camp this time last year. Doggies played it very well
RCD doesn't have that far to go. He just needs to get fitter just like Iliver and Petracca did at his age. Ross has been stuffed around so much not sure it is that or ability. Time will tell. Nobody at Richmond other than maybe Prestia will go head to head right now with Bont, Petracca and Oliver, in the peak of their powers, a few years ago maybe. But to see Bolton, Ross, RC, maybe Stack and of course Martin, Prestia, Edwards and Cotch still in the mix but sharing it about will be much more interesting and probably more capable. The way they brushed aside Port and Geelong's mids reminded me of us in 2017/18.

Think he has been a victim of West Coast's depth. Got Allen as the third tall forward, Barrass and Rotham as the third tall defenders. Been a bit of a plug and play type player for them. I do genuinely think he could be a third tall marking forward for us.

Not a single person was s******ing at Geelong when they acquired Cameron, Smith and Higgins after being so close to a flag. Now it has all turned pear shaped as they gave away a heap of top draft picks …. but no-one was laughing when Cameron and Smith were smashing it when 44-points up in the last H&A game of the season and flag favourites.

If we don’t contend we’ve lost nothing except $700k in salary cap. And from all reports Tarrant is a great leader so who knows what he brings off-field in Astbury’s absence. It’s a genuine free hit given he’s a free agent. No-one will say a thing if it doesn’t work out as he cost nothing.

You're kidding, it was dad's army jokes all season. We have the draft hand Geelong gave away, massive difference I know. Fact is 22-27 year olds in their peak win you flags, not 30+ year old, look at GF's this year. Of course you can have a few.

Why does everyone forget Jack Graham?

Think Jack Steele as a comparative player, has very similar attributes and is ready to take that next step

They are also 12 months older though. They should have the hunger as this is surely it for a few of them, I think we need a few younger players to start the season on fire. Imagine a player like Hugo puts together a great first half of the season, or any one of our younger mids, it will lift the rest of the team a great amount. I think our best hope is to start the season great, then ease into finals. Geelong in 2019 like, just we are much better at finals footy.

Brander has been playing as the fat side winger guarding space, given a chance in the position(s) he excelled in and he'll be impactful. Very similar to Balta but not as much mongrel IMO

Jarrod Brander - Aussie Rules Draft Central

Balta is a better athlete and KPP prospect. Balta may have a better leap, longer kick to probably.

Brander looks more like Astbury but more mobile. Brander is unproven as a KPP though, maybe he does not have Astbury's strength

Brander would not be competing with Balta. We only have one Balta and he cannot play in every position

Imagine Balta on a fat side wing. That would be a weapon with his speed and long kicking. Still Balta is arguably more effective as a KPP and we could not afford a heap of Balta's anyway because of their value and there is a salary cap

I seen Brander take a mark, run through the centre of the ground and kick a ball into the forward line for his size so I think their is a place for him in the right role for a certain team combination

They all can't be useless surely, have to place some faith in the development and upside

No.

A mature mid who is proven is a must. Non negotiable. The midfield got slaughtered all year. Let's not sugar coat it. These kids are miles off it.
