For some reason the club isn't/wasn't prepared to up their offer to CCJ. I was surprised because I thought he was the next in line to play FF. It is what it is.

So either the cap is really tight or the club don't rate him. I can't give you more than that.
i assume the answer to that is that with lynch 4y ahead of him, ccj appears an unlikely partner to est a threatening front half presence, prefer to invest in fresh talent that we can park and develop for 12m while jack and tom play out their time together

It's hardly sensationalist to say a bloke who is 23 is going to look further afield perhaps after he finds himself in the reserve backup category again.
You reckon he is not champing at the bit to play AFL after 5 years, they all are. Why did CCJ leave and he is younger.

Of course Tarrant will be there rd.1. I just wish we had looked a bit harder for a player in a better age bracket.

When you’re going for a ‘last dance’ flag I’m very happy they got the best available, irrespective of age. Tarrant is a gun. We only need one solid season out of him. Our backline this year, notwithstanding injuries, was scored against way too easily. A hulking KPD that can lockdown and intercept will mean Balta can use his athleticism to be more of a zone off defender who can use his rebounding skills to much greater effect.

It’s a very shrewd signing if 2022 is indeed the ‘last dance’ which I’m sure internally that’s what the coaches and senior players are thinking.

Reckon we were pretty desperate back then and right in the window. I was very pro Prestia, my main argument being what would all those players in their prime, Cotch/Martin/Edwards/Grimes etc. think if we said were were going to the draft, ie rebuild.

But I reckon those players have had their time and have to hand the batten over to the young group we have going. Ross finally gets a crack proper in the last game without all those names around, and was our best player against Hawks seasoned mids. Mitchell comes in and Ross goes out.

I think we need to build a group around Bolton, Balta, Stack etc and hopefully RCD, Ross, Dow maybe a few more plus a great draft hand. It might take a few years but they deserve their chance, get Mitchell have to give a first round pic. Maybe we can rise up from last year, we still have the cattle but we will need the young players to do it next year front and centre.

I'm not sold on ross, being able cut it with treloar bont prettraca Oliver etc.

Dow And rcd have a long way to go too.

I'm shaky on Richmond chasing a Mitchell type but you can see why they would want to add it to the mix.

I was in the treloar to Richmond camp this time last year. Doggies played it very well

Yes in the short term that is the case. But like Geelong and their band aid fix you risk the chance of losing young players that might have been. Be is 33 years old next year, name one 33 year old recruit that has ever made a difference to a side.

You don’t have to look too far:

Isaac Smith was excellent for Geelong - 32yo at start of 2021. Tarrant comparatively is 8-months older when he plays for Tigers.

Stefan Martin has been a vital cog in a flag push. 34yo at start of 2021. How’s that acquisition looking … might be a Premiership ruckman.

Mumford coming out of retirement at 34yo to help GWS. A massive part of their finals appearance and victory. Not a trade, but a shrewd selection that filled a need.

Hodge to Brisbane when 33yo. Outstanding leader who guided a young team to finals.

Anyway…there’s 4 players of similar age in just the last few years who cannot be denied were hugely successful acquisitions.

Narkle has signed a 1 year deal at the Cats!

Tiger71 do you have any mail on what changed for Narkle? He was gone for all money, according to you and everyone else. The Cats lose and suddenly they want to keep him. Did they realise that their midfield is old and slow, and so his speed and age were useful?

Pity I thought he could add something.

And maybe we cooled because there is something else we are cooking up?????????

To me Brander is either a KPP or third tall possibly. If he is soft that's a problem. Dunno. As mobile as he is I think he just is not good enough to be a normal mid or wingman, maybe pigeon-holing was a issue at West Coast amongst other things. He would not be a normal mid anyway, not a Richo winger either

The question is can he toughen up and play stronger in a defensive or forward role eventually? Ideally he is the sort of guy it would be nice to get him on the supplementary list to see how he ticked before making a call.

If Brander is going to make RFC might be the place because we do not have enough of that type in terms of opportunity. He could be a effective mobile hybrid player. He just may need to find the right role and right team mix to suit his attributes. Looks versatile maybe West Coast with their established players did not suit him and his development

West Coast transitioned Brander into the midfield and wing halfway through the year. Performed well at WAFL level in that position. His last 3 games he averaged 30 possessions and 8 marks a game. In his last 5, it's 26 and 6. Showed some promise. We could do worse than having a player like him on the list. Gives us more flexibility given he can swing forward or back or play as a wingman.

Here are his stats for them:

Lake won his last flag at 33 iirc.

Norm smith too

Clearly a mid short.

Mitchell makes sense for him Richmond and hawthorn.

Not a big fan either but I can see it happening

Might be needed too trying to stay with the dogs and Melbourne midfield groups.

Dunkley would be good if still available
Dunkley.
Now your talking.

Isn’t Weideman a forward?
He's a footballer.

Any forward can be turned into a backman provided they can kick.

are their whispers about weideman ? , i rate that kid , reckon it would be an astute move , more mobile than ccj and as good a mark, could combine well with lynch
None except the whispers I'm trying to start. ;)

The issue with Brander is that he's very timid. Classic case of built like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

And your point is? What sport was he playing up until his AFL debut, umm football. Tarrant is in a much better position to be a more than capable footballer for us as he comes from an elite base. His extra experience can only enhance his chances. I am having real trouble understanding what your problem is with this trade. It covers us in a number of ways and the fact we are a bloody good team will aid Tarrant's transition. Tige's will be red hot again next season.
I was replying to the 5 year mistake in age.

I get it that Tarrant is a bonus in the very short term. But I don't think the Tige's will be red hot next year as I think our old players are losing their impetus. To me it is the young players that will propel us forward, which might take a year or two. We were wooden spooners for the last 12 games. If everything goes well yes we may challenge, but it would all want to go really well IMO.

I get that and agree in part, eggs in one basket, but a 33 year old. If Miller goes which is a possibility, then we are a calf away from having Garthwaite as our only backup until a draftee or Bigoa, maybe. Port grabbed Allir Allir! All I am saying is it's a risk and very short term. If Geelong did this we would all be pissing ourselves, not congratulating ourselves.

Not a single person was s******ing at Geelong when they acquired Cameron, Smith and Higgins after being so close to a flag. Now it has all turned pear shaped as they gave away a heap of top draft picks …. but no-one was laughing when Cameron and Smith were smashing it when 44-points up in the last H&A game of the season and flag favourites.

If we don’t contend we’ve lost nothing except $700k in salary cap. And from all reports Tarrant is a great leader so who knows what he brings off-field in Astbury’s absence. It’s a genuine free hit given he’s a free agent. No-one will say a thing if it doesn’t work out as he cost nothing.

Reckon we could coach that into him. Also think that it isn't as much of a weakness in our lineup given we aren't as much a contested side like the eagles.
Also, given his height and overhead marking, it means that we don't have to push Jack or Lynch up to the wing every kickout and have no-one forward if we mark it.

For what he would cost, I think we could do far worse.

After researching for about one minute I came up with James Podsiadly. He went from Geelong to Adelaide in 2014 aged 33. he played 21 games, took 41 contested marks ranked 4th in the AFL that year and kicked 26 goals. Pretty sure I could come up with more examples if I bothered to look for them.
Luke Hodge

If i had to chose 1 as a must take between Mitchell/Treloar
I would take mitchell 99 times out of 100

I would also be happy to give up pick #28+#40 for him but not any more and his salary is just out of our range

Tarrant is a great pick up and replaces Astbury
i think we are a midfielder short to seriously contend. Cannot rely on Prestia, Cotch Lambo to play all season and the young ones are a bit raw
If we get a solid B+ grader in trade, it frees up cotch to play fwd a bit and perhaps have bursts in the middle

Then we can do that with our other 3rd rounder. Taking 6 18 yo olds is just unnecessary. Take 5 and use a 3rd on a 23 year old that the same as those 3rd rounders but just 4 years ahead.
I just don’t see the point of narkle though? We have dusty, edwards, lambert, baker, Bolton, castagna, aarts, Parker, MRJ, then players like graham, Dow and Ralphsmith all could play his role as a forward/mid. How many do we need on our list?
