Trade Kurt Tippett

If I were in change, I’d have an ‘off the record’ (and make it well known to him that everything was off the record and he was very much a required player) conversation with Kurt Tippett and ask him straight out – do you want to stay in Adelaide or move back to Queensland?

If he said he wanted to stay in Adelaide long term (length of his AFL career or even 5 to 6 more years) I would be starting some contractual negotiations with his manager. If he was unsure, uncertain or could not give a definite answer, the next question I would ask – would you like us to start enquiring about a potential trade? If he says yes, then I’d be pulling the trigger on a deal with either of Brisbane or Gold Coast this year.

Brisbane – I’d got for Jack Redden and Jarod Polec to help out ailing midfield for Kurt Tippett and a 2nd maybe 3rd rounder.

Gold Coast – I’d aim for Sam Day and their top 5 pick for Kurt Tippett and out first round pick (around 10 or 12)

So you want us to give you Redden and Polec for Kurt Tippet and a 2nd or 3rd rounder, You would win that trade.

So if he said or intimated, he wanted to leave - you wouldn't try and get maximum return for your investment?

of course you would, but if he wanted to stay - who has said they would kick him to the kerb anyway?

As good as Scott Thompson had been, if you are classing him as being elite you must include Rutten and Johncock as well, as they would be on par with his output.

Who would get a game for Collingwood and Geelong?

Would Johncock replace Davis or Enright?

Would Truck replace Tarrant or Reid (or Brown) or Scarlett?

I believe Thommo would have Luke Ball or Wellingham covered.

Stiffy would replace Ben Johnson or Nick Maxwell on the half back flank or back pocket. And I would have him replacing Josh Hunt or Darren Milburn at Geelong

Ben Rutten - Collingwood would never have recruited Chris Tarrant last year or even looked at replacing him over the last 4 or 5 years so Leigh Brown would be playing VFL or at a different club. And at Geelong, he would replace Harry Taylor, or Scarlett would play at CHB and have Rutten at FB.

Alex has picked up on what I said earlier in this thread...time to have the hard talk.

Today I intend to watch tips, and how he is used, like a hawk. But... Like walle I am a bit dumb founded by done posts here. If he is worth so much in a trade...he has to be a gun player. some make it sound he is second rate...but worth so much more. Can't have it both ways...

I have been saying this in another thread and I feel your concept of a "talk" is the way I would handle Tippetts inferred desire to end up at the GC. (Home). My biggest concern is that if we just sit back and believe that Tippett wants to stay with us for say another 5 years and then find next year that he is on the move will do more damage and lessen our ability to get the maximum for him. Some commonsense on this issue at last.

You're kidding me right? You're not really that naive?

What's being naive about it?

if he gives you the answer, you act on it.

If he says - i'll stay, start negotiation a new extension to his contract -therefore eliminating the 2nd round pick or even as simple as putting it off for 4 or 5 more years until another decision has to me made.

Or, if he says i don't know and I could see myself playing in the GC sometime, I start investigating a trade.

It's about knowing your player, being open and honest with them and making it well know that they are a very important part of the club and everything will be confidential.

For some reason people under rate premium KP players, which Tippett is. Midfielders like Redden and Polec come around every second year and are easier to find than a reliable and talented KP. Considering you will be losing Mitch Clarke I think brisbane would jump over this, however I am of the opinion if we are losing a KP player like Tippett we need to get one back so I personally wouldn't consider it.

If Kurt is sought for trade (still pretty sure he'll stay a Crow), I'd be honestly curious to who he''d go for.

Gorringe was one of the first who re-signed this year along with Prestia about a month ago. Both did a 2 year deal, so the Suns are clearly keen on holding onto him. Day is in the final process of signing a new contract for the Suns with Matera. Again, seems the Suns are very keen on retaining them. Be interested to see what the trade would be.

I really cant see it happening, but I am not completely against the crows putting their toe in the water in regards to trading Kurt. I'm not that convinced that he is going to turn out quite the player we are hoping for. Not sure a second ruck deserves to be the highest paid player on the list.

There are only two "elite" players in the Crows. By elite I mean players that would get a game in every one of the other 16/17 teams.

They are Scott Thompson and Kurt Tippett.

We waited 10 years to find someone to replace Modra and now some great judges of football talent want to trade him.

Go figure

The guy has an exit clause in his contract, you dont fight for something like that if you're planning to stay long term.

Considering that we are not going to win a flag next year dont you think the idea of sitting down having a chat with Tippett is the best course of action ?

What do we just play him next year and accept the 2nd round pick or do we go on the front foot and get the best deal possible now if he is going to leave us next year ?

The exit clause is a game changer and IMO reveals Tippett's hand.

Get the best possible deal and trade him now rather than do nothing and lose him for a crappy draft pick next year.

We really are stupid. What, did we think that we were just going to rock up in 2010, win a flag, and then nobody would ever want to leave us even if they did have an exit clause in their contract?

Bring on the new era, I'm totally over this shit.

Walker and Day is more likely to work structurally than Walker and Tippett. Take the risk, trade him. Could be a winner for both clubs, and Tippo has never really delivered on what he supposedly has in the shed. He certainly, -certainly- hasn't warranted anywhere near his $700k price tag, if that figure's legit.

I think it is supremely naive to think any conversation would be 'off the record'. The manager would speak. People at the club would speak. Kurt would speak. If such a meeting was to take place, the media would know about it within 20 minutes. Probably before it even happened.

the very fact if it is true that he has a clause in his contract to release him to GC to me means we should trade him now or sign him up and extend his contract further before the draft?!

Why?

We don't even know what type of forward Day will be. He could be a Nick Riewoldt wing/CHF type, a bash & crash Jon Brown type, a deep FF Dawes type.

Keep in mind Roo's article is based on the premis that we would benefit by trading IF we would lose him anyway. Not let's trade him because he's no good.

Now that GC have pick 4 this year, do we trade for that to snare Wingard in this draft? Or Redden from Brisbane. Tippett plus 10 for Gorringe and 4?
Use the compo pick for Davis to get Kennedy?
Day could be a bust like Sellar, or could be a Riewoldt. Are we in a position to gamble with our list now?

Whoever agreed to that exit clause in his contract should be fired immediately. The single most pathetic thing I have ever heard of in football.
