Lewis always looks to me to be a better player than he actually is. I've never worried much about him when playing Hawthorn - has always been Mitchell and Rioli that have torn us apart, with occasional cameos from Roughead, Burgoyne and Hodge.

He's a solid workhorse who isn't afraid to get down and dirty in the clinches but that's about all he can do. I remember when we beat them at Subi in 2014 he had 40+ touches, wouldn't have even had him among the best 10 on the ground that day.

I might be a tad biased though given I love Barlow and have never really rated Lewis.

Nat Fyfe - almost certainly he will sign with us long term. Next captain, key leader and the person the team is built around. He will know the benefits of being a one club player and we should have plenty of cash available to outbid other clubs. I don't think he has/is shopping himself around really, but understandably he doesn't want to waste away at a club that isn't contending - if we don't show we are heading that way next year I'd be surprised.

Hayden Ballantyne - he may still leave us this trade period but if he doesn't we could we get some compensation (late 2nd-3rd rounder) next year instead? Although if he does stay, I doubt he'll leave for another club next year.

Garrick Ibbotson - somewhat surprised he hasn't been brought up at all as a trade option this off season as he has decent value still imo. It would leave a gap but is he realistically part of our next premiership push? Will playing our youth push him to the fringe of B22 and will he move on as a free agent next year? If so, could we get some compensation. I'd have thought we could get something more valuable for him at trade this year but he probably doesn't want to leave.

Nic Suban - could we still see a sneaky trade this year? I really don't understand not having him on the trade table as he should have little opportunity to be B22 next year, he has some trade value currently (could we use him to upgrade a pick?) but can't see him getting us compensation as a free agent next year.

David Mundy - can't see him moving even if he loses the captaincy and will extend on yearly contracts.

Aaron Sandilands - won't move and will extend one more year or retire.

Michael Johnson - probably his last season next year and likely to retire.

It's an interesting crop of players you bring up.

Fyfe - You hear stories about him believing his own hype and being a bit full of himself but think he'll stay.

Ballantyne - Blown up in his face, if it's going to be made public that you want out you need a suitor locked in.

Ibbo - Part of a group along with Spurr, Mzungu, Ballas, Mayne, Clarke, Sutcliffe and a few others that should have stepped up when Johnson, Sandilands, Fyfe etc went down but didn't. A fringe player now IMO.

Suban - In the Siegert, Gilmore, T-Lo, Browne mould. Has a go but isn't very good. His days as an AFL player are numbered.

Mundy - His role will be interesting, Mundy and S Hill rotating between HBF and the midfield/wing looks dangerous.

Sandilands - Will be missed more than Pav or McPharlin when he goes. Would love to get another 40-50 games from the big fella.

Johnson - Tailor made for today's footy and another one we'll really miss when he retires. Players who are 195cm with good hands and a great kick are hard to find.

Something I havent seen mentioned here, I'm almost positive Hamling played on Rioli in the semi, and kept him to bugger all. Aside from Rance, what other tall def could do that?

Considering the issues he's caused us, that alone would be grounds to punt hard for him. And then there is the fact he also did very well on Pavlich, Kennedy, Cameron and Buddy. Has there ever been a better finals series from a key def? If that was Rance can you imagine the fawning.

Want.

Spot on Dom, I said it erlier somewhere that Barlow is our best wet weather mid, loves a heavy track

Slows everyone down to his speed and kills them with skills

You think Hamling would me more confident playing on Rioli with Wood, Boyd and Morris around him or,

Spur Suttcliffe and Dawson?

Barlow is going to be a star for Peel next year if he's stays with us.

Lewis will be way more than that. I don't want Lewis but the over estimation of Barlow is massive.

I thought he looked pretty average against us. He only spent short periods on Pav and Pav killed him imo. Most of the day he was on Walters who also troubled him.

In the finals his teams form was much better and the ball rarely came in to the opposition forward line without a high level of pressure on the disposer.

He's no dud but he's being overrated based on his finals form.

Totally agree , way too overated .

The best team sheet line joke like that I have seen is:

Stiller, Proud, Hooker

It is what it is.

Here's a guy who has had an opportunity through injury to team mates

Adopted the game plan and structure well

Taken some scalps - with help

And now owns a premiership medallion

Finals form is the only form and he's only as good as his last game

Pick 7

Skills / sniping - Lewis
Size / marking / defence / age / hair / comedy / off field - Barlow
Ball getting / speed / gut running / on field leadership - Draw

Lewis has better footskills, which is important and has made him a better player than Barlow (once Lewis starting winning more of the pill over the last few years). But add everything else into the mix, and Mick is not far behind and 20 months less old. Just further shows to me how it would be better to keep him than turf him for peanuts.

I'm afraid Freo's bad taste this year left me without watching too many opposition games.

What does it actually mean to have Kersten and Hamling in the side?

What role is Hamling most suited to in defence, why did he only play in the back third of the season - what makes him special essentially?

With Kersten it may be a little more straightforward, not a superstar but kicks goals and provides options perhaps?

Trying to get a real feel for what our side may look like with all these new lads running amok.
