PORT ADELAIDE’S Aaron Young is prepared to play out the rest of this AFL season without future job security, claiming he plays his best footy “on the edge”.

Young admitted 2016 was a “make or break” year for him, but told foxfooty.com.au he had given “no real direction” to his management about his next contract as he was happy for negotiations to commence later in the year.

“For me, all I’m looking at is playing footy for the team and playing some important roles for the team going forward.”

Young revealed he was kept in the loop of a potential trade last October, but said he was glad he remained at Port as it gave him the chance to cement his spot in the club’s best 22.

“I was committed to stay and see out my contract at least and build on the career that I’ve made so far at Port Adelaide,” he said.

It really depends on what we are aiming for.

If it is a good player or high picks then we have to give something good. Lobbe, Neade, Broadbent

If it's to shake up the list and dispel complacency, then a lesser player would do. O'Shea as an example.

Also, considering the picks that GCS and GWS have collected for this year's draft, I am not sure we will be able to trade up bunches of lower picks as clubs did last year.

Our best 22 certainly needs to be addressed, as well as adding depth.

Over the last 40 games we have won 21 games...

No doubt we have the talent to win a premiership, but things need to be changed.

O'shea a lesser player than Neade? Carn.

Hypothetical: If we have the chance to trade next years first round draft pick to say GWS (who potentially have more pick/points than they want) for a first round pick in this years draft - lets say the pick Collingwood gave up finishes being pick 5-6. Would you do it?

Yea, more then likely.

But our list managers would have a very good idea of who is coming through next years draft vs what we would get for it in this years draft.

Also worth noting doesn't our academy come into effect for next years draft so that needs to be considered.

The reinvention of the Philadelphia Eagles continues with the team acquiring the No2 overall pick in next week’s draft from the Cleveland Browns.

In return for the No2 spot, the Browns get the Eagles’ No8 pick and third- and fourth-round selections this year as well as Philadelphia’s first-round pick in 2017 and second-rounder in 2018. The Eagles pick up a conditional fourth-rounder from Cleveland in 2017.

And as I said earlier in this thread, this has worked out phenomenally for the Chargers and cowboys who get the #1 offensive and defensive players in the draft respectively.

They are blessed that clubs are so desperate for QBs

Broadbent, Neade and Lobbe? Not going to net us much, unless we strike a list manager whose been hitting the turps. We need to offer a player that will have people saying 'Don't trade!' to get in the decent pick / player category.

Part of the issue looking at our list is there aren't many glaring holes. I know that is odd considering our recent performances. The age profile and experience is good. Most areas are well covered.

We have the giant KPF and roaming KPF. Schulz has been a loss and Howard is developing. We have a top quality ruck, a depth ruck and a developing ruck. Hombsch, Clurey and Trengove could form a very solid backline. Carlile, Jonas, Austin and O'Shea give us plenty of KPDs. Our midfield is stacked with first round picks and talent. Pittard, Krak, DBJ, Impey, Polec, Broadbent, Bonner, and Hartlett can be an excellent HB line. Monfries, White, Wingard, Neade and Amon could be excellent half forwards. Not sure about Johnson and Palmer as they are still very young.

For me we have three priorities another KPF to cover Schulz, more pace and an experienced head similar to what Hardwick did for us in 2004.

Depth chart

Key forward - Dixon, Howard , butch

3rd tall lead up forward ? - Unknown ? Palmer , monfries if he re signs but he is near end of career.

Ruck- Ryder , lobbe , frampton , Howard

Key back - carlile , Trengove, hombsch , Austin

3rd tall key back - clurey, jonas , Oshea

Not too bad. Need to find a key forward to compliment Dixon. A 3rd tall lead up forward with a good work rate ala okeefe or lynch from Adelaide.

Lots of key backs there nice depth and age profile. Ideally we want better ball users back there, which jonas and Trengove are poor at and we could hide those weaknesses but at the moment poor choices by midfielders in the back lines are highlighting those weaknesses by being flat footed and handballing to other flat footed players. Pittard and bones highlight this when they get the ball and break lines then dispose of it. When they do that jonas and Trengove look much better as they are stoppers not ball users so don't involve them in a chain of stagnant handballs.

When it comes to the midfield it's more a trait we need rather then anything else. We need better users of the football, footskills in particular.

Also , a jarred Schofield would be nice. We have linkmen in our team at the moment but all are flawed.

Mitchell - schofields running into space but terrible fumbler and disposer of ball.
Ebert - not gut running into space as hard as he used to. Terrible kick of the footy no touch to his kicks
Polec- doesn't get enough not enough work to space.
Toumpas - really knows how to find the pill. Burns it by foot sometimes. Have hope he can become a good spread midfielder though
Oshea , hoon ? Hope for hoon maybe ?

Schofield was just so clean with the ball once he had it. Not a lot of hurt factor with his disposal but he worked hard as a linkman and never hurt us with turnovers. Moved the ball forward.

So yeah , a key forward in the next year or two. Midfielders with very good disposal. Gut running linkman with solid disposal.

The issue for me is this:

Flankers:
Neade
Broadbent
Monfries
O'Shea
Stewart
Amon
Toumpas
White
Polec
Impey
Bonner
Pittard
Colquhoun
Johnson
Byrne-Jones
Palmer
Young
Krakouer
Houston
Hewett

Outside/Inside:
Boak
Ebert
Hartlett
R Gray
Wingard
S Gray
Mitchell

Inside:
Wines
AhChee
Snelling

We have KP depth in all areas developing nicely with Howard, Clurey and Austin. We have small backline depth developing ok with Impey and Bonner, we have some small forward depth coming on ok in Palmer and Neade.

The issue for me is the ball winning category, we need ball winners and we need a ruckman to feed them. Ryder coming back will help, but then we need to put the right players at his feet.

With that being said....would Chris Mayne be a good 3rd tall to target? Provides great forward pressure and consistently kicks goals.
