Ah the Crows and trading in good faith... I'd be surprised if every list manager doesn't hate them, especially the way they handled Hately instead of just offering up his value.
If everyone doesn’t hate them over Hately, they certainly do over the camp and their gutless refusal to accept responsibility.

If they get their player and also pay unders then who gives a crap about list managers. Better then what we have been doing lately by overpaying.

I don’t know why there is a push to move Pep into the midfield, he’s proving to be an outstanding high half forward which is bloody hard to find. It’s like the “let’s try Marshall at CHB”.

Leave Pep where he is and it’s one less hole we have to fill.

B+ mids are a lot easier to find than B+ high half forwards.
Pep is not a great shot for goals so I would like to see him tried in the midfield. Everytime he is near the ball he brings the energy and makes an impact, so I would like to see him in a position where he is placed near the ball more. If pepper started the preliminary final last year I think it could have been a completely different game, his energy is contagious and I've seen him pump up the whole team with it numerous times when they start going stagnant during games.

There’s wishing thinking, we lost because we are mentalit marshmallow, when the pressures on we melt. Don’t think pep would have made a single difference tbh.

How is Dunkley's running capacity? Could he pair up with Pep as a high-forward that swings through the midfield while Boak is still playing, then move into mid full time once Travis retires?

Swings and roundabouts with trades. We did get Alir and Finlayson without giving up much. Clearly won those two trades by a fair margin.

Way too early to tell on Josh Sinn. Pretty hard to impress when you've been struck down with OP all of your first season.

I don't think ladhams has done a real lot at Sydney as of yet but it's still only early on that one.

I reckon we are too focused on an already decent midfield group.

If we don't look at our actual needs, we are still going to see Lycett struggling in the ruck, us bombing the ball long to McEntee deep forward, and a revolving door of Clurey/McKenzie getting smashed down back.

I think it’s reasonable to target one quality midfielder this post-season, either in the form of Dunkley or the player we get with our first pick, especially as we’re losing Amon and possibly Bergman.

Otherwise I absolutely agree that we need to address tall defender, 1-2 electric small forwards and figure out something in the ruck.

Assuming JHF is completely unobtainable this year, then an approach that looks like:
1. Amon compensation pick for Dunkley.
2. Bergman and our first round pick for McKay and Kangaroos second round pick.
3. Kangaroos second round pick used on goal-kicking, sharp small forward.
4. Our remaining picks, PSD, DFAs used on other needs: more small forwards, developing mids, ruck (especially if Hayes leaves).

Getting McKay also allows us to continue to develop Lord as a tall forward, which would be my strong preference.

2. Bergman and our first round pick for McKay and Kangaroos second round pick.

What are you valuing McKay on the open market. Assuming Bergman roughly cancels out their second rounder that means a pick around 7ish for him.

Yep.

Our entire defense is a shambles and there’s not much coming through.

Clurey Jonas McKenzie are done. Finished.

Alir is about to turn 28.

In the 2024 season, when we would expect a new coach to be taking over our current backline will be

Bonner (26/27) Clurey (29/30) Burton (27)
Alir (29) Jonas (33) Dbj (28)

Realistically some of them are finished now much less by then, and the next coach really doesn’t have a backline to mold from that group at all.

Unless we want our next coach to spend his first 2 contracts drafting and developing an entire defensive group while the rest of our teams prime gets close to slipping by we need to be drafting our next defense .. well, yesterday.

But we’re going to have to settle for now.

At the moment we’ve got pasini as the sole key defender option hoping that he develops into what we want him to be. I rate him but things happen, and having only 1 egg in a basket this unpredictable is risky as all hell.

We have half back options in jase and jones and maybe Bergman or sinn depending where they end up developing. And Houston is going to be around for a while yet. Still, there’s question marks over actual lockdown small defenders as well. A defender who can go with the small and medium forwards. I sure as hell hope our entire hopes aren’t all on one player (jones) to be the only player we need on our list to fill this role.

The fact that I’ve just exposed how big a problem our defensive group is in in a couple of years warrants us throwing everything at that area to hopefully address it, and if only we could, and looking down the other end didnt look dire for small and medium forwards and demand attention also.

****, in 2024 what small and medium forwards could we expect on our list? I’m not even going to bother making a list like I did with defense. We have no one close to a sure thing. No genuine forward other than fantasia and he’s a pipe dream to be actually in one piece much less playing past 2024. It would be a miracle if Williams makes it at this point. The rest are just midfielders playing as high half forwards.

Ignore these needs this off-season and it would take several , not just 1 or 2, several small consecutive miracles to not waste the mid careers of our next prime midfield and key forwards in a dysfunctional half built team that in all likelihood would start taking shortcuts to address those issues.

I'm totally against building a new team while Stinkley is still in our midst. If he wants new players he can do it without destroying our draft hand.

The greatest need is a tall defender 195cm plus. I think if we can draft one we do it.

I would consider Sam Day 197cm if he could be moved out of Gold Coast cheaply
I would go for Francis as a delisted free agent

B Jones/McKenzie, Day , Clurey/Francis/Jonas
HB Burton, Aliir, Farrell/Bonner/Sinn/Burgoyne

If you could keep him on the park it would make such a better looking defence for little cost with depth.

Finlayson is another left field option.

Our list is certainly in a mess.

Defenders: Jones, Burgoyne, Pasini (coming off a knee) and Farrell fall into the young but long way from proven category. We at least need to draft or trade for two big defenders and one lockdown small defender under the age of 25 across the next two post-seasons.

Mids: Rozee and Butters are the longterm keys, with Wines edging toward 30. Drew plays a role but will always be a support player. Mead is far from a guarantee. Duursma on the wing should come good again - I would leave him there and not try to turn him into an inside mid. If Amon and Bergman go, that leaves Sinn who is entirely unproven and Jackson who seems unlikely at the top level. We still need to bring depth and quality into both the inside and outside midfield positions.

Rucks: who knows? Visentini is very young but now seems the most likely out of all of them. We need to recruit someone here or do something quick smart to get Hayes into the side again and improving on his weaknesses.

Tall forwards: ironically, this seems a little bit more assured with Marshall's coming of age, and Georgiades still progressing well despite his ups and downs. Finlayson is the perfect third tall forward, back-up ruck option for the next 3-4 years. Would love for Lord to be allowed to develop as a forward if we can recruit tall defenders.

Small forwards: cupboard bare, empty. SPP playing the high half forward role superbly. Then nothing.

Is he uncontracted?
Wasn't when Essendon tried to get him two years ago. Is now.

He's one year off from being a FA, so the real question is - would Dunkley be offered a bigger contract than Rockliff was offered?

If the answer is no, the Amon compensation is more than fair - the AFL will manipulate things so the Dogs get an end of first round pick which is what they would have got for Dunkley as a FA.
