Yep.

Our entire defense is a shambles and there’s not much coming through.

Clurey Jonas McKenzie are done. Finished.

Alir is about to turn 28.

In the 2024 season, when we would expect a new coach to be taking over our current backline will be

Bonner (26/27) Clurey (29/30) Burton (27)
Alir (29) Jonas (33) Dbj (28)

Realistically some of them are finished now much less by then, and the next coach really doesn’t have a backline to mold from that group at all.

Unless we want our next coach to spend his first 2 contracts drafting and developing an entire defensive group while the rest of our teams prime gets close to slipping by we need to be drafting our next defense .. well, yesterday.

But we’re going to have to settle for now.

At the moment we’ve got pasini as the sole key defender option hoping that he develops into what we want him to be. I rate him but things happen, and having only 1 egg in a basket this unpredictable is risky as all hell.

We have half back options in jase and jones and maybe Bergman or sinn depending where they end up developing. And Houston is going to be around for a while yet. Still, there’s question marks over actual lockdown small defenders as well. A defender who can go with the small and medium forwards. I sure as hell hope our entire hopes aren’t all on one player (jones) to be the only player we need on our list to fill this role.

The fact that I’ve just exposed how big a problem our defensive group is in in a couple of years warrants us throwing everything at that area to hopefully address it, and if only we could, and looking down the other end didnt look dire for small and medium forwards and demand attention also.

*, in 2024 what small and medium forwards could we expect on our list? I’m not even going to bother making a list like I did with defense. We have no one close to a sure thing. No genuine forward other than fantasia and he’s a pipe dream to be actually in one piece much less playing past 2024. It would be a miracle if Williams makes it at this point. The rest are just midfielders playing as high half forwards.

Ignore these needs this off-season and it would take several , not just 1 or 2, several small consecutive miracles to not waste the mid careers of our next prime midfield and key forwards in a dysfunctional half built team that in all likelihood would start taking shortcuts to address those issues.
I reckon Pasini will be a big addition next year when he's back from his injury and has a bright future. Agree though the rest probably not up to standard. Burton is a rock, he still has many good years left. McKenzie I feel would be better used on a wing when Amon leaves, he's just signed a new contract so if he's 'finished' as you say it seems a strange call. Jonas for sure I think his days are numbered, not opposed to him going around again one more season though. He is still a tough player, and is one guy I know will put his body on the line every week. The thing is though, he should be playing a Michael Wilson/Jacob Surjan type role, just quietly going about his job in a back pocket, he should not be a key position player because he can't keep up with the big boys anymore. If we're sticking with Ken, I'm sure he'll have his way and keep the old brigade around another year anyway. (including Robbie, who is a shadow of his former self.)

What’s the go with Sexton at the Suns?

Always seemed a dangerous forward in the rare Suns games I watch and going back 12-24 months he was a regular 2/3 goal a game forward before seemingly falling into the abyss.

Kicked nearly 40 goals in 19 and another strong year in 20 before being out of favour.

Any interest up forward? Don’t imagine he’d cost more than a 3rd/4th or super fringe player.

He’s 28 so only has a couple years left but allows time to develop another forward.

Apparently from gc supporters he is pretty well cooked. Not sure whether they meant physically or mentally.

I'd take him over McEntee, but there's about 700 other AFL players I'd take over McEntee so I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to recruit him.

Seems he really fell out of favour as soon as Rankine arrived whether that impacted him and his preparation/motivation.

Between 18-21 he kicked over 100 goals so knows how to find them and that’s while playing for a team like the Suns.

If his body isn’t cooked, wouldn’t be against throwing a lifeline.

I'd be happy to trade a fourth for Jimmy Rowe and then immediately delist him.

At least wait until he's had multiple pictures taken in Port gear and then do it just before round 1.

As if every single club before then wouldn't take Rankine and back themselves in to get him to stay. Especially Essendon who already made a massive offer for him.
PSD is really only a threat for players wanting to go back to Victoria and willing to go to any club if they can't get to the one they want to. Another of those things that benefit the Vic clubs that don't really get mentioned much, the illusion of A in AFL must be maintained.

If they get their player and also pay unders then who gives a crap about list managers. Better then what we have been doing lately by overpaying.
Dodo - delusional, Adelaide - Arseholes, Port - 'here take it all! Ssh, don't say yes before we can offer more!'.
All three are bullshit positions, I just wish Port could be like most clubs and find a middle ground between 'burn in hell' and 'easy mark'.

Honestly, out of the Rowe/McHenry/Murphy triumvirate of spuddery, if I had to pick one I'd pick Rowe. He's the only one who's at least shown glimpses of competence. Seems to be the least in favour of the three though, which surprises me.

He is the best at ducking so he gets a few easy kicks at goals every now and then.

i just dont want to paper over the cracks that will see us hovering around the good but not good enough mark.

is dunkley the answer? should we hit the draft hard?

Dunkley mcKay ennough?
