I would be horrified at the idea of handing Hinkley Dunkley in 2023 and we what it will cost us.

Soft draw plus another ready made player means we might just be good enough to be also-rans.

Everyone at the club can smugly pat themselves on the back for being also-rans, collect their pay check and the fans can deal with being mediocre for longer, since we’ve given up assets to build around our younger core, probably lost players / development time (does anyone think drew is playing games / staying if we brought Dunkley in?).

I can easily see a dark path that leads to years more mediocrity disguised as

insert missing link player here
we’ve just been unlucky
players not following game plan (work hardery)
we’re not last so what are youse complaining about, we’re just a small club
fan base lamenting that rozee and butters deserve a cup in their twilights years

REPEAT

Yeah, Dunkley is a safe bet to be a good player if we bring him here.

But

1. He’s gonna be 27 before a new coach even speaks to him in 2024, and if Hinkley gets an extension based off being also-rans in 2023 than he will never see another coach here.

2. This idea he’s simultaneously very good, but dogs will let port, a known pushover at the trade table walk away with him for a single pick is ludicrous.

We paid a 1st and 2nd rounder for a guy a club (gold coast) had publicly said they want out of their club. We paid a 1st and a 2nd for a player who could have walked out on his essendon contract. We publicly stated we wanted a 1st for Ladhams to take a bag of chips ten minutes later. We coughed up a 2nd and 3rd rounder for orazio Fantasia. Lol.

Anyone who thinks the dogs don’t know they can go to town on port Adelaide in this trade is a buffoon.

3. This trade relegates drew to trade bait, and we would get nothing for him. Theres just no way that wines drew and Dunkley will work well in the same midfield. They just won’t. Drew would go out. Which you could live with, if it served you well enough..

4. Ports issues aren’t a lack of another ball winning spread midfielder. ****, we’ve got Spp and Houston playing flanks, and they’re both good enough to do that role and well.

Our issues are elsewhere (several key defenders needed, forwards needed and so on) and we don’t have solutions to them on our list. Trading out assets to land Dunkley make it infinitely harder to address them. We already are down a draft pick this year. We don’t have enough picks to target our needs before we give up picks for Dunkley.

Yes Dunkley almost certainly improves our midfield and improves our team in 2023.

Does he improve us enough to win a GF?

If the answer is no, ask yourself at what cost have we just paid to be also-rans in 2023 and what the fallout of that cost could be.

Might be able to swing that next year. But they would want ridiculous overs this year
The probably would; but they are apparently keen on Bergman who is also contracted so they’d have to give us overs also.

Of the two; only one of them has been dropped numerous times and keeps getting called out for having attitude problems. (Which I feel is being exaggerated)

So assuming Berg is assessed as worthy of a late 1st rd , (would keep him if this wasn't the case), then we would be offering 3 first rd selections for JHF. Kids good but unproven, that is insane. Wait till next year.

Put it this way, you are giving up - Phillipou/Clark/Hewitt/bussilinger + Hayes + Dunkley (nexts yrs 1st) or just JHF , looks crazy when ya do it that way.

Yep it is crazy. And I wouldn’t do it. But they aren’t going to accept our first plus Bergman this year

They will find it hard enough to get Rankine. Gold Coast will make it an absolute shit fight.

I think we are in a better position to get horne Francis if he wants to come back

OK so what do we have to work with.

At this stage it will be Pick 9 at best assuming Ashcroft will go father/son.
Amon compo probably about 19 or 20
If Bergman wants to leave either a late first Round or 2 x second round that could be upgraded to Brisbane's 1st Round 16/17.
Hayes will want out unless Donuts makes a surprise departure and should get a late second seeing he's in contract maybe say pick 35-40
Then we have a 3rd and 4th Round pick 53 & 56

So is it possible to get Horne Francis with 9, 19 and next years 1st Round pick? Probably but I think the cost is too high.
Or is it better to trade the Bergman 16/17 for a first round pick next year and then try to get him next year when the cost would be less and have 2 x first round picks ready to go.

But of course Donuts will want to spend 2 years picks getting established players next year to try and get a contract renewal.

So he’s mediocre at north or mediocre at port?

North will go past us in 2024. It won’t take long.
We are not a team that loses week in week out I know it’s nothing to brag about but we did make the preliminary final the last two years something like that happens at Norf about as often as Hayleys comet.
It’s going to take longer than 2024 to get norf even pushing to play finals.
Anyway there’s no certainty he would even come to port.
With a name like his I’d reckon he would have been a Sturt/crows supporter as a kid.

IF Burgmann wants to head home, IF, Burgman and Amon compo is late second round, IF Hayes is going and we no interest in Lewis… Burgman and either Amon Compo or next years 1st and 2nd for 3rd swaps next year.

If Burgman staying in town, Amon Compo, next years 1st and the pick swaps.

Happy to pay 2 firsts for JHF and a pick downgrade, but 3 and tell them they’re dreaming!

We don’t lose pick 9 this year!

Wines, Rozee, Drew, Butters, Pepper. We have plenty of young midfield potential already. Id rather we just spend the picks working on getting the half dozen small forwards we are lacking. And perhaps a key defender and ruck wouldn't go astray. And then if there's anything left we can go after things we already have.
