That’s fine, but JHF, like Clurey, Jonas, Mackenzie, doesn’t solve our critical KPD shortage. The oppositions best KPFs are just going to keep getting off the leash until we address the issue properly.

I can’t even remember the last time the club drafted a highly rated KPD…maybe Chaplin, but that’s being generous.

We aren't doing anything other than development next year anyway.

We have two years to trade in a competent KPD. If we can't achieve that then we have way more problems than worrying about JHF.

Same article has Melican up for trade. 26yo 195cm defender. Hasn’t been able to get a game behind McCartin brothers. The little bit I remember of him he was there pure stopper that played on big boys while Rampe zoned off. Has played 52 games. Anyone actually remember if his any good?

The fact that Collingwood are considering Frampton goes to show the dire shortage of kpds around the league. Lots of teams are screaming out for a defender who can match the big forwards. Good time to be one as you could demand big $$.

We have two years to trade in a competent KPD

I think we’re setting ourselves up for long term failure if our strategy is to trade for a quality KPD.

Facts are, a quality KPD will cost a lot on the trade table. First rounder plus more.

That’s also assuming any want to come to SA and Port.

Second, if we want to get JHF that will also require a strong draft hand to trade.

To fill those 2 positions, we could end up loosing 3 first rounders or a mix or players and multiple picks.

Our list has many holes. We can’t afford to be spending so much on 2 players.

Fair enough go for JHF but we simply must draft a high quality key defender. Realistically we need to draft 2 and should have over the past 2/3 years as they would now be ready to step in.

Jonas and Mckenzie shouldn’t even be required to play as key defenders next year if our list management team had done their job properly the last few years and identified and addressed this massive gap.

But hey, even on here for the past 3 years when it’s raised majority have been happy with going with Mckenzie and Jonas and claiming it’s not an issue rather than drafting for the future and their replacements.

Simply, I think we’re screwed in the KPD department.

Regardless of who the next coach is we are never going to be a serious challenger for a flag until ( as many posters have been pointing out for years ) we have at least one, and preferably two quality 195 cm plus key defenders on the list.

The Jonas, Clurey, McKenzie size defenders will always eventually be found wanting against the genuine big blokes, and that has been one of the major reasons why we have struggled to get the chocolates against the likes of geebung more often than not.

This ‘Dire Shortage’ has been plaguing our club for the past 15 years at least, including the entirety of Ken‘s reign. It’s unforgivable & arrogant to think you can hold together a key section of your back line with bits of string & gaffing tape.

Undoubtedly Fogarty has lifted this year, after years of looking like a hack, but the guy has kicked 15 of his 30 goals in 4 games against the bottom 2 teams. Take that away and he has 15 goals from 11 games. He hasn't deserved a status of first round pick worthy just yet.

If Adelaide got offered a second round pick for Fogarty they should be doing laps around the table with pants down. He's certainly improved this year, even beating up on the shit teams aside, he's justifying selection now. Prior to this year anything more than a 4th as a punt you could get him fit would have been overpaying. I don't see him progressing to being much better, so if Adelaide were offered a second for him, the only thing holding them back would be they market him to their (ignorant, does that need saying?) fans as something better than he is, so after bullshitting his worth, they'd question why he's only worth a 2nd.

Adelaide and Port are two extreme's. Adelaide - 'Yeah, we want this player, but we'll take him in the PSD if you don't let us have for peanuts' or 'Sure would you like this crap player and pick?'. Port 'Now your opening bid was you wanted a second round pick. Our counter offer is we give you a first round pick and a first 22 player! Think about it carefully, if you want more, we'll do it!'. Oh for a middle ground (by Port).

Injuries aside, 2020 stats for Melican.
Want better, but at the very worst is a Band-Aid solution.

I would rather invest in Sinn, Duursma and Bergman on the wings rather than NWM, but just think that’s the cost.
