Not even worth that. He's a PSD type pick. Given that he's contracted at absolute most I would have forced the Pies to come to the party in a Brian Lake type deal. Downgrade of picks but without dropping rounds.

The Melbourne Football Club have just handcuffed themselves with a $500,000 lead weight.
But but... he is an awesome KPF who would act as a perfect foil to the main KPF in any side... if we had picked him up he would have been the perfect foil to our main KPF... in the VFL.

Honestly, if he was any good, the filth would never have gone for someone like Lynch. Why is it that people miss that fact completely.

Everyone bagging out Melbourne are overrating picks.
If given the choice (with unlimited list spots), I'd probably take Dawes before 8 of the last 10 pick 20s combined.
I would always trade pick 20 for a key forward ranked equal 82nd for contested marks per game and outside the top 100 for goals per game playing in a top 4 side. Correction - I would always make that trade only after freebasing cocaine.

But he would provide structure to our forward line (but not kick goals or take contested marks)

Let's see.

Dawes vs. Crozier - Crozier is a fair bit like our Walker and has a heap of potential.
vs. Pitt - Also at Freo, good potential
vs. Fyfe - Geezus, Freo love their pick 20s, Fyfe wins
vs. Swift - Wouldn't trust a doctor with a shit hair cut - Dawes wins.

can't be bothered going any further back, but there's some seriously good talent around those picks. Very jealous of Collingwood right now, they've dominated this trade period for mine value wise.

I'll take that bet, but I'm not particularly interested in your left nut.

Or your right one, for that matter.
I thought you liked nuts...

Isnt that why we keep trying to talk rationally to people like BRIB and co?

I would bet my left nut that Neeld gets the sack within the next 1-2 years. I'm predicting the Dees make a major play for Roos next year

Would not surprise me in the slightest of Neeld was sacked after this coming season. They may make a play for Roos, they'd be fools not to sound it out, but I assure you he will shoot it down fast. He wont end up there. IF he does end up coaching again Roos will walk into a plum job like Malthouse walked into ours.

Melbourne shelling out 2.1Mil for Dawes and handing over pick #20 is laughable
Sooner have the pick than to have a player who was doomed to play at VFL level next year.

People are getting stuck on a number the way they used to with #6 for the poor record it had.
That's just silly as you have to look at it from the view of what you can get when you get the pick right.

People are using Tom Swift as an example of what a pick #20 is worth without looking what it could have got.
#21 Ballantyne. #22 Trengove #23 Zaharakis #24 Suban #25 Redden #29 Beams #30 Hannebery
I'd sooner any of those players from 2008 than the Dawes.

Maybe Melbourne just don't trust their recruiters. Bad move Demons and Collingwood must be giggling like school girls.

Yet this board continually tells me we won the McLean trade cause Gysberts is shit.
It's very easy to pull the guns out and say look what they could get but its much easier to pull the duds out and show what they could also get.
I'm not saying it was a great deal but pick 20 is nothing to write home about really. Melbourne have butchered many picks already. Plus it's not like they're throwing their only pick away. They've still got great picks.

The money is obviously way overs.

A draft pick is only worth as much as the player it turns out to be. It could net you the best player in the draft, it could net you the worst player in the draft. Its an educated guess at best, especially once you get past maybe the mid teens or so. Have no issue with Melbourne going for the devil they know, at least they can be confident with what they're receiving whether we like Dawes or not.

Outside of Mitch Clark last year, the Melbourne forward line was full of players who were either terrible or disliked any form of contact. Dawes brings 105kg of player who will at least put himself into the contest and have a crack and i'm sure he's keen to put last season behind him and settle into a full time forward role. Just needs a bit of confidence and can be a serviceable forward again, at the very least.

That's the problem with Melbourne as they're not willing to back themselves with a pick.
Do you think Geelong would have been happy to hand over a #20 for Dawes? They know that they'd do better.
Dawes wasn't even very good when the Pies were flying and if that was the best he's got, then it's not really very much at all.

Anyway it's not our problem, so for that alone, I'm thankful.

i dont know how people are saying we won that deal, i think we would of picked up talia instead of gysberts.
i was shocked when we got lucas cause we were in need of a kpp!!

If news of GWS interest in Warnock is true then it might mean they are not interested in drafting Grundy. They may see that investment in an 18yo Ruck as too risky and would prefer to use their 1,2 and 3 picks on mids.

In this case i think we are a real chance of getting their Pick 12 or 13 for Warnock, who along with Giles can carry their rucks for 5 or 6 years.

A Pick 12/13 swap for Warnock would suit us down to the ground.

Totally agree TW with the new ruck rules announced Warnock's value has risen, he is well worth pick 12 or 13.
I think Warnock for pick 12 nice to have two picks in a row! if not pick 13 will have to do.

We paid massive overs for McLean and seemingly had no back up plan until Fev lost his shit and the crazy Vossy stars aligned.

McLean's starting to show his worth though. We really picked him to be part of a premiership side though and the pieces around him haven't fallen into place yet.

This. Pick 12 or 13 would be a good trade for both teams. We could then pick up say Ben Kennedy and a Jake Stringer/Lachie Plowman, which would be solid.

Are GWS still keen on Knockers tho? I've seen conflicting reports - some saying they are still interested and some saying they've cooled off given he's contracted... Not long to go if they're to work something out...

Collingwood have killed it this trade period.

Gaining more than they've lost whilst releasing salary cap pressure. 10/10

Totally agree Harks. The part that kills me is that by going off Knightmares Phantom Draft. Collingwood have:
Pick 17- Nick Vlastuin
Pick 18- Dayle Garlett
Pick 20- Tim Membrey (still listed under Melbourne's pick)

Very handy 3 players who could all be realistic top 10 picks.

I really feel we need to find another first round pick. But from where???

All good, just another week and a half

Looks like Port Adelaide's Ben Jacobs will head to North Melbourne for Matty Campbell and a draft pick .... absolute steal.

I still maintain that we should have done more to secure this guy.
What is with teams at the bottom making all the wrong decisions. People will say Free Agency killed these clubs (Pearce, Moloney etc), but their stupidoty hasnt helped them.

Do port need an average at best small forward? The pick would want to be a monty.

Are Collingwood going to be better off next year for losing Wellingham and Dawes?
Probably not next year, but they have the chance to really get things going the year after.

I'm still far from convinced on Collingwood's depth and if they get this draft right, they'll do themselves a huge service.

I also love the thrill of the draft, but can't see us getting anything done, let alone getting a #12 or #13 for Warnock now.
Let's just get the best of the boys we have and we'll find that we have more depth than anyone would have given us credit for.
