If ever our players needed motivation to be part of a successful team, the over rating of Chris Dawes even after a horrid year and a half will give them all hope of finding nice retirement packages.

True that! Cloke is worth 2 million a year if Dawes (a bloke that got dropped a week before the finals even though they had no one to bring in for him) is worth 500,000

So Dawes may get 500K a year at Melbourne? :D

That's funny and sad at the same time.
This is why I am glad we haven't got caught up in the FA & Trade argy-bargy this year. There are ridiculous amounts of money being thrown around by AFL clubs this year, along with longer contracts than the players involved really deserve. There may be some short term gain, but there is going to be a lot of long-term pain for those clubs who have behaved like a child in a toy store in these last couple of weeks.

Spot on. No point in even walking into a room where a big man is up for trade if there are others in there who want him too. Overs guaranteed in price, silliness in contracts inevitable.

that's what being a re stricted free agent will do though (not the Dawes case obiously) It's no diff than the NBA. To get get a restricted FA, you have to pay overs or else the team they are with, simply matches the offer.

For a bit of humourous relief from the boredom of a tradeless (extended) trade period I recommend the Dawes thread on the Melbourne board. Some of the contributions from Pies supporters are priceless. For example, lengthy explanations on why Dawes is no longer worth pick 20 plus change; in fact he is now worth pick 4 or no deal... all backed up with sophisticated market logic.

Great stuff.

Holy mother of creation! Just had a quick squizz at the Tippett thread on the Crows board and its approaching the size of a Bryce Courtenay novel...350 pages, 8,500 posts, almost quarter of a million views, all since October 2nd.

Gotta be some records set there, being reset by the minute too. Records that will never be broken. Gee whizz, wowee, what a preformance!!!!!

Impossible is nothing.

Could we get pick 2 for Warnock + pick 11?
Or are we losing out with a deal like that?

We wouldn't get that and I'm sure we'd take it, but can we say for sure that we'd be miles in front?
There is a relatively large numerical gap between 2 - 11, but how does it actually play out for the players that will be there?

Just looking at Chris25's mock: Would Grundy or Stinger be that much in front of Macrae for us?
I know we'd have options to other players at #2, but it's all relative to who we really want and where they may fall.

If we lost Warnock (and 11), we'd probably end up having to pick Grundy with #2. Not really better off in terms of our window, is it.
Or we could take Toumpas, but we'd also have to get another player at 70, due to the extra spot on the list.

I had a pretty good laugh!!

Melbourne really have no idea on how to trade....

There are A-Graders that don't get that sort of money.

It's embarrassing to think that your size correlates with your salary.
It may not come to that sort of money, but if it did..................seriously.

If I was JIM Stynes looking down from heaven, having spent so much of my time trying to turn around my beloved club before I died I would just be spiritually sick at what has happened to the club since I left it to its own devices.

Will be really interesting what they give up for Dawes and what they pay him .... just madness to a stupefying level given the facts that
1) Dawes wants to leave
2) FIGJAM hates him
3) Filth must surely need to free up the salary cap space.
4) Dawes at his best is average at best and has been a spud the last year and a half.
5) MM did not want unless bargain basement.

Wake up Melbourne!

Bit harsh. We actually have a plethora of tall forward options, Melbourne certainly don't. Dawes has a contract and it's only speculation that the Pies have to let him go due to salary cap issues. And Dawes may be average but as a part of a whole he has proven he can play the game well enough.

Melbourne need to get their skates on and start moving up the ladder so I can certainly see why Dawes appeals. He's certainly not worth pick 4 but then that was some Pies Troll who suggested that.

I would say Melbourne will part with 20 and cover his contract at least partially. If they have decided he's their man than whether the majority thinks it's unders or overs is irrelevant. It's just the price.

They have three players I would certainly play ahead of Dawes -- Mitch Clark, Matthew Bate and Jack Watts who may still come good. Getting Dawes on an inflated contract is suicide.

Bate isn't a KPF regardless of his height, and struggles to make their side as is. Watts is still to find his place in AFL football and regardless of how good he may be one day, Dawes has shown more than him as a KPF. Watts has played his best football behind the ball.
