Port could be interested in Gilham

(It is believed the possible availability of Hawthorn full-back Stephen Gilham has taken Port's attention.)

With the Suns as another possible suitor, could mean the Hawks could get a very good deal for either Jacobs, Weller and/or Toy
Port will want to deal with us to get Gilham too. They don't want to affect their compensation from free agency so they will for sure trade for Gilham if that is true. I for one hope that does happen, but i would prefer a pick rather than Jacobs.

Does anyone else think that the club is perhaps hoping those three free agents (Young, Murphy and Osbourne) get picked up by other clubs to free up some of our cap space and get a decent compo pick that would be the net worth of those three players?

I know it's not a nice thought but realistically we will need to free some cap space up to retain best 22 players and unfortunately at least 2 of those 3 are fringe players now and likely on quite good money considering that. And I don't think I need to point out why getting a decent compo pick in this draft in particular would be very desirable for us.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Osborne sign a new deal at the start of this year?

Pick 7 an 28 are the only reasonable picks port have as the third round pick was shipped off to Essendon.

Not sure whether Gilham is worth Pick 28 or in fact port would want to part with it.

Also Gilham isnt a Free Agent so it wouldnt affect their compo situation

Apparently Suns are keen on Murphy. Any Hawk fans want to give me an idea on what sort of defender he is?

Seemed to have a good 2011 but poor 2012. Injured? Get much of a preseason?

Murphy is a medium- small lock down defender.

Dont know whether he had a poor season. Others were ahead of him and if Hodge didnt come back for the GF, Murphy would have played.

He wasn't exactly poor, but our defence was very settled with Schoey Gibbo and Stratts back there. He is a reliable shut down defender and would give you guys heaps of experience. Always tries his guts out and is known to be a very good leader in the team. For a team of youngsters, I think Tom would be great for you guys. You may find though when you guys push further up the ladder, you will have more polished players and will hence push him out of the team.

One thing is for sure, Tom Murphy will put in 100% effort for your team every time he plays. Just lacks the polish for our team at the moment, and isn't big enough to stand the big guys.

189cm but tends to play on the small forwards. Has done well at this in the past but not amazing. His strengths are as a leader more so than ability. Won't ever be a star but will always give his all for the team. Not sure about his pre season but the reason he had less games in 2012 than 2011 was due to having a fitter list with other players moving ahead of him. Would be a good fit at Gold Coast as a valuable role model for the younger players.

As people have said above, he is a medium sized lock down defender. He has limited ability, but he knows his limitations. If you give him a job to shut down a small/ mid sized forward, he will do that job.

I actually think he would be a good fit for the Suns, mainly for his leadership. He is part of the leadership group here at the Hawks. He is one player that leads by example on and off the field, and seems very well liked by the players.

Murphy is a solid defender who is very good at shutting down a small/medium forward and limiting their impact. He has copped his fair share of criticism from many Hawks supporters over the years but he rarely fails at his role. He was rather unlucky this year as we just never had a spot for him within the side. It'd be a shame for us to lose him but I can completely understand if he walked away, should have played in the GF in my opinion

Ah yea god damn it i keep thinking he is one. That throws a spanner in the works then because i agree they wont give him up for pick 28. Would definitely have loved to have two consecutive picks in the draft though
