Are you certain this is the case?

I recall reading an article saying that Port were looking to get a 2nd and 3rd round pick for Chaplin and Pearce.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. lets just say port lose 4-5 players to FA this year? does that mean they get 5 additional picks in this years national draft from the AFL? (the comp picks for FA can't be banked, and have to be used in the same year they are received). If this was the case - the first round of the draft could finish at pick 35!?

Disappointing to lose Tommy, sensational clubman, and really solid defender over many years. But after being EMG for two GF's can't blame the guy. Our depth is taking a worrying battering at the moment. Especially if Clint walks too, as well as Gilly. Hope Wright has some ideas up his sleeve.

Keep in mind that the club only gets 1 compensation pick at the end of the FA period.
So it's an accumulation of the players you lost and their worth that make up the decision of what pick is awarded. Ie. the PA scenario, where they traded for Monfries rather than pick him up as a FA having lost Pearce and Chaplin.

So if Young is considered a 2nd round pick, and Murphy is considered a 3rd.. surely that adds up to being more than a 2nd round pick? Hence i think if both leave, the AFL is more than likely to award an end of first round pick if we lose them both. (Pick 25 approx).
Remember that we got Lake as a free agent so that will come into consideration.

Some general thoughts on the trade and free agency this year.

Some player agents are asking for the compo picks to be scrapped. I think the compo picks are going to assist with extra trades. Teams will have extra picks to use to complete trades or no they have a backup pick so are willing to trade there existing picks. It will help with the ease of movement of players from one club to another.

I think the AFL should allow the compo picks be used either in the current year or the next. This will assist teams with flexibility in drafting and trading even more so than now.

I also believe that clubs now are taking a more pragmatic approach to trading, due to the free agent rule. I don’t think the Lake trade would have gone through or as cheaply without the free agency hanging over the dogs head. This is also making hope easy to sell to supporters as its easy to change the list makeup with the new rules.

The extended free agency/trading period is also a god send for footy nuts like myself. More content/talk about football for longer, it takes up more inches in newspapers and on TV, thus helps the AFL market the game for longer and wider. Take Sydney for instance, the media around the swans premiership would of generally died down by now in Sydney, but with there chase of Tippett, it still provides stories for the news and papers up there, making it more relevant for longer.

It's only a net result if you lose a player to FA and gain another one. If you lose two players in separate deals but don't get any back you will get two picks. Hence why Port traded For Monfries.

I would assume with the losses of Boumann and Murphy (perhaps also Gilham), we may be looking to draft a mature key defender in the rookie draft? Or perhaps in the national draft.

A thought I have is 23 year Joel Tippett - played in the SANFL in the side that came runner up as a key defender - he is meant to be a possibility of been selected once again, or could even be prelisted by GWS and traded. He is 197cm/93kg - do not know his speed or anything though.

Or another one is Lucas Cook from melbourne - out of contract 20 year old.

God I hope so othewise our supposed weak backline is gonna be very light on for depth.

I was going to ask that - its quite a good scenario for a club which is pushing the salalry cap, you cant really trade two or three playeres to the one club for one pick - the other club can't afford it

If two or three players leave I can see us taking just draftees this year then keeping the cap space to chase a first rate free agent next year (and satisfy buddy obviously)
Also I sense its time to give some Box hill guys some game time or theyll be doing a kennedy on us
