Doesn’t end on the track. It’s in the gym too, we have so many players who are weak and are 2-4kg off the weight they should be to compete.

The players who do have AFL level bodies are the guys putting in extra outside of their program (Tucker, K Dawson, Sheez, Wardlaw, Curtis ect). If you aren’t getting strength or hypertrophy results from an elite AFL training program and you have to do extras then it’s a pretty shit program.

You only have to look at the Sydney, Geelong or Melbourne side, their kids come in and within 18 months they’d eat ours for breakfast.

Does our development team (I’m assuming we have a team and not just a single dude with a spreadsheet) not know the difference in size of the players?

Look at Bruhn the other week. If he played for us he would be the biggest mid we have.

I think part of it is we require our youngsters to be fit AND strong since they're carrying the bulk of the load. They spin their wheels trying to put on size and improve their running at the same time. At those other clubs they can cover the fitness deficiencies through the older boys running harder.

Without PEDS it is so hard to get both running and strength up to AFL standard at the same time.

I think this is why we're starting to see elite runners translate better to the AFL. It used to be that blokes who needed to "develop a tank" were seen as having more potential. Now clubs are starting to realise that they may just never catch up.

Shit genetics. Some of these boys could juice and they’d still be whippets. Robert Scott was a solid ball of mass if I remember correctly, why the **** is baily 12kg’s ringing wet?

We have a whole team of strength/conditioning/rehab specialists that’s headed by Kevin White and Daniel Cross.

I’m not going to complain about our injury list since White come on board it’s been really solid, but the overall strength and running capacity of our side isn’t AFL standard. I get that we are a young, but the rate at which our younger develop both physically and from an endurance perspective is far slower than other clubs.

Bruhn is a pretty perfect example of that.

Genetics is part of it, but you can’t tell me LDU couldn’t be bigger, stronger, leaner. He should be looking like Petracca or Dangerfield by now!

Bailey Scott could add at least 2-3kg of body weight. I don’t care how quick your metabolism is, it is well and truly realistic for him to be a bit bigger and stronger. Same goes for Stephenson, Taylor, Mcdonald, Fisher ect.

I know Miller Bergman hired a seperate building coach in the off season, and while he is still a bit of a string bean he is noticeably bigger and stronger in the contest. If Bergman can do all of the above blokes can too.

This is very true but the thing you need to consider is it's a pretty difficult choice between doing extra after hours sessions or being pictured at the opening night of Mamma Mia. Insta followers are very important these days apparently.

Goater looked bigger too from last season to this season

There is recruiting component to this, too. Paul Curtis is a monster because Paul Curtis was always going to be a monster.

The skinny short blokes at North wouldn't be Mick Martyn at another club. Keep it real.

Do some of our players just skip the weights or gym sessions?

You can't tell me that with dieticians, weights and massive gym room, training plans, food, and everything at the disposal and players like Curtis, Stephenson etc can't put on a kilo of muscle

Unfortunately there are no standards at our club so barely anyone is pushing each other in the gym or training

Only one I have seen is Powell that put on 4 kilos of muscle in that preseason and he is developing into a great player (not the sole reason of course)

Oh I get it. But we have too many players that aren’t forced to take it seriously. There is no way Luke Mcdonald would have the same
Physique if he was at Sydney, Geelong or Melbourne.

Taylor, Stephenson, Mcdonald and others do the bare minimum…and have done for a long long time.

The thing is. We have had countless coaches, assistant coaches, heads of football, development coaches, fitness staff, and so on and so on, from different clubs, over the last 10 yrs.

There's no way if standards are THAT bad that someone hasn't said SOMETHING. So what's the limiting factor? Or is it a bit of a beatup? What needs to happen to enact a change?

I reckon player mindset has a fair bit to do with

Look at the pics of Hardeman above? Do you reckon he's hung back moaning about no experience to show him the way? He's probably gone and got at it himself. Same with Sheezel, Wardlaw, McKercher.

Was this person suggesting they didn't train hard before the season started? Or is this just something to fit the narrative?

Why wouldn't you say all that before the season if its your job to comment on all the visits you do during the pre-season?

Not buying it.
It's one man's opinion only yes, but combined with the eye test of LDU in the pre-season games ( I remember all the comments on he's only going half pace but will turn it on when the real stuff starts), and our inability to lift when the pressure rises in game, I think it builds a picture that there may be something in what he says.

At the very least they should be getting physically stronger even if not putting on mass. No evidence of that with Taylor or Stephenson .
