Simpkin has had 4 concussions, this could end his career. But Webster will probably get 5, maybe 6. The AFL doesn't have the ticker to penalise it in line with what they gave Sam.

And so it begins ...

"He's obviously shown some remorse there and I guess our thoughts are with the North Melbourne player in Simpkin," Enright said.

"Hopefully he's going to be OK and you never want to see anyone go down. We'll deal with whatever comes out of it from there.

"(Webster) is a great person and he's had a long time in the game.

"As we know with football, it's one step here or one step there.

"It's a really fast game, faster than ever. These things happen really quickly.

I'd be happy with 8 - 4 for the bump and 4 for being a dumbass. I get that footballers aren't generally rocket scientists but gee whiz how dumb could you get.

Enright saying that it's a fast game and these things happen quickly is a joke comment. He's lined him up from metres away and cannoned straight into him with clear intent.

Where is John Ralph now. Not blowing up about this incident?
Despite being at the game he wasn't as quick off the mark as he was with SPP

Knowing that SPP got 4 and saying Webster deserves 5-6 minimum is BS.

A reminder that there was ZERO remonstration from Crows players after the SPP bump on Keane - that tells you what professional athletes thought at the time of the 2 incidents.

No slo-mo replays needed to determine intent and impact either. There will be no bio-mechanics witnesses called to the Tribunal either.

That's the difference Ralph!

A. Long enough to understand that bump has been outlawed. It’s not like they don’t run awareness things for the players.

B. I’m tipping he had longer than the 1 sec(ish) that SPP had. He lined him up from the western suburbs of Perth.

The way the tribunal assesses this will determine whether I engage with AFL again.

The bias has been evident for a long time but this will pretty much cement in my mind that the bias is intentional.

They're not even bothering to pretend anymore.

Why didn't he throw his player under the bus like daddy donuts? 🤔

Wonder if Uncle Rupe is gonna run with the whole “piece of sh¡t” angle or do they just reserve that for players of a certain background?

There's a Port angle to this.

Reckon Riley Bonner gets a look in on their opening starting game now.

Not my quote but in the words of reddit:

"Becoming a journalist and writing for news.com.au is like becoming a chef and working a bunnings sausage sizzle"

Just imaging if SPP really wanted to

Interesting isn’t it. We also know we don’t have ‘management’ to call it out.
I think we need to have a bit of perspective here.

We now know about the long impact of brain trauma, not just on the immediate impact on the careers of professional sports men and women, but the long term psychological and economic impact on everyone who suffers a blow to the head - be it at school sports, local sporting clubs or on the footpath outside a local pub after someone coward punches someone else because they spilt their beer. This is not something new- that knowledge has been around for decades.

The AFL has taken too long to recognise the impact of this issue on our game and even now is making idiotic punitive actions against individuals who make mistakes within the rules of the game instead of looking at the game itself. And to make matters worse the penalties they have handed out are clearly biased and prejudicial.

AFAIK nothing of consequence has changed in our understanding of the permanent brain trauma caused from concussion in the five months from September 2023 to February 2024. But apparently the AFL believes the head-on and totally avoidable high tackle in September 2023 that causes a player to suffer permanent brain trauma and retire from the game must be reflected in the penalty handed out to a player in February 2024 for a completely different circumstances.

But any club who in 2024 dares use this issue as a platform for pointing out the hypocrisy and complicity of AFL House will be crucified by the AFL aligned media for not caring about the victims of brain trauma - especially if they are clubs under the effective control of the AFL rather than independent memberships like the Victorian clubs and West Coast Eagles.

I think the term is Real Politik. And it has us by the short and curlys.

Purely for context, Bickley got just 5.

See, context is subjective when dealing with different years.
Here is the problem with Buckley's analysis. The AFL didn't allow precedence to be considered in the SPP hearing, given how head knocks were to be seen/adjudicated. If the same approach applies, which it should, I'm sorry, but 8 weeks is absolutely fair and reasonable.

This is the first opportunity for the AFL to drop their bundle and show their VFL bias just due to the fact how much worse this action is compared to SPP.

The revised AFL guidelines do not exclude the Tribunal from taking account of previous rulings.

They just remove the requirement to do so in sentencing.

The guidelines are not a year zero mandate. But the direction to consider ‘evolving community standards’ gives them an independence they have not had previously. This to me is the most important change.
