Australia doesn't get the tax revenue of Norway or Qatar because it's in the middle of butt**** nowhere and it costs money to ship anything from Australia to Europe (where most LNG is used). There just aren't the same margins involved for the oil and gas companies to make a profit while paying a 35% tax rate. Our LNG industry rises and falls on the back of transportation costs that other countries don't have to deal with.

The cost of shipping a carrier of LNG can fluctuate around $100k USD per day all the way up to $250k USD per day. From Qatar to Europe takes 17 days. The US can supply Europe with LNG 10 days quicker than Australia can. To illustrate how much faster - when LNG shipments from the US were routed to Europe instead of Asia, the spot price for transportation of LNG crashed from $273k USD per day to -$750 USD per day, because the turnaround time was so much quicker.

So you're looking at probably 30+ days to transport LNG from Australia to Europe, at a cost of $100k USD per day - $3m in transportation vs $1.7m from Qatar and $0 from the US. Per shipment, one way.

That's why we don't have the tax revenue of Qatar. No one is trying to screw us, FFS.

Genuine question

Oceania countries don’t use LNG?

I would be pretty skeptical that we don’t have avenues to sell to nearby as if Europe is the only place that has cities lol.

Also, general rule, yeah they are trying to screw us.

The single driving principle of capitalism is take as much as you can.

Any business, if they’re capable of screwing you, must, by absolute definition of what they are, try to screw you.

If there was only one company on the planet selling drinkable water, they’ll charge not by who needs it to live, but the absolute most they can get for it.

Anyone who thinks something different is naive.

No it’s not. The single driving principle of capitalism is never sell anything unless you’re sure they will buy more. The difference being that in your scenario, price is set by the business, whereas in reality it is set by how much the customer is willing to spend and still return at a later date. There would never be the hypothetical monopoly you put forward in your scenario either, because there are laws against that. Just as there are laws against price gouging.

Do Oceania countries have a harsh winter that necessitates the use of LNG for heating purposes? Do they have gas fired turbines to generate electricity for tens of millions of people? No, they do not. Australia is the biggest country in the Oceania region and it’s a pebble compared to Europe and the US in terms of energy demand and GDP.

China uses lots of LNG and that’s our closest market but they are getting a lot of energy from Russia through newly commissioned pipelines.

It’s why Australia has a whole bunch of mineral resources but can’t get the same price for them as other countries, and why our mining industry fluctuates (in terms of viability) based on the price of the commodity targeted. Our “warehouse” is twice as far as anyone else’s.

Yeah, lecture me on price gouging in the week I’m paying $2000+ on return flights from syd-Adel (for 2 people) to see my Mum in hospital.

Laws against price gouging. What a load of s**t.
That's not price gouging. You're just used to paying deeply discounted fares for air travel.

I'll guarantee the flights you have paid for at $1000+ are fully refundable tickets because they are full economy fares instead of discount economy. Airlines offer discount economy flights when they find it hard to fill up the plane and they want to get at least something out of it. When demand spikes, they charge the full economy fare. In fact, one of the reasons why if you go to an airline booking page and see a cheap flight but then go back later and see that it is gone is because the airline uses the site cookies to determine demand on flights.

Just because the item isn't on sale anymore doesn't mean it's price gouging.

"Transport costs" yet our gas is cheaper in Japan than here. I'm sure there is a perfect explanation of that too.
Absolutely. Japan buys five year contracts of LNG, which is set at a discount rate and is locked in to ensure price stability for manufacturing etc. I assume you're looking at the spot price, which fluctuates daily.

Paying less than $1k+ for a 2hr flight isn’t a “discounted” ticket.

I bought the cheapest flights I could get.

How ****ing disconnected are you from reality?

I paid like 1k return for business tickets to and from GC this November. Reckon economy is about 500 return. No matter the choice, it's dumb money for a 2h trip, wish it was more affordable for people in general as we'd be a little more connected. Australia is so ****ing big though.

Mate of mine is flying from Vietnam to GC for like the same price as an economy return ticket from ADL > GC. Domestic prices in particular are dumb.

Just a quick search:

Saturday 22nd of October - $282
Wednesday 2nd of November - $205 - in fact, all through November the price doesn't go above $250
Tuesday December 6 - $170
Thursday December 22 - $252

I have no idea where you were looking for airfares.

Too crazy for Donald Trump. A sequence of words I did not think possible. Congratulations Kanye. :clapping:

I'm up your way early Nov looking for good Pub food or eateries any ideas welcomed. :)
Well I remember recommending some local establishments to Jumbo who had a good time when he passed through, but that was a while ago now. Where is he these days?

Anyway I guess that depends on the style of meal you want, eatery or good pub?

The Tydvil Hotel won the award for best Parmi in NSW so that's something, the Palace as well is considered a destination. As for restaurant tier food I like S-Que, fish and chips the local 'secret' is Rags but honestly I think it's a bit overrated. Other pub and clubs probably say the Sturt or the Mulga.

The Broken Hill Pub is the newest shiniest thing but I've never been.

tl;dr

Pub: Tydvil, Mulga
Club: Sturt
Pseudo restaurant pub: Palace
Restaurant: S-Que
Takeaway Pizza: Spargos
Fish n Chips: Wherever really they're all alright, maybe Hockos actually but never order a burger meal always get burgers on their own then a family chips it works out much better.
Thickshake: Bells
Daytime cafe eatery: Silly Goat

Football Club: South but it's closed for the off season.
