Becoming more concerned with personal finances is definitely related to political beliefs and ideals.

Not really. It's more about stuff like making sure you've got enough super to retire because your pretty sure the conservative campaigners will get rid of pensions as soon as they can get away with it - rather than suddenly wanting to join the landlord class.

I don't think we should completely stop the ability to use housing as an investment, but the number one priority needs to be treating housing as a human right. A good start would be significantly restricting the short stay industry, or stopping it entirely. Strongly limit rent increases. Tax people for properties that sit there empty. The current situation where people are one week from the end of a lease with no ability to find somewhere else to live is inhumane.

Short stay accommodation (outside actual hotels/motels) is a rort. Want to start a hotel? Outlay the funds to set one up properly.

Remember when it was actually cheaper than hotels so was worth doing, before Airbnb decided to add ~50% in fees on top of the costs, making it more expensive than a hotel without any of the convenience?

But the free market is an All Knowing God. How could this happen?

It’s almost like unfettered capitalism needs some sort of regulation and governing and the bootlicking “the system is fine everyone is just lazy criminals be thankful we’re not in the mud” puppets for the wealthy elite that block any kind of regulation are wrong.

Short Round with the Oscar W.

The thought of placing one of those bespoke bets those English bookies take,

“Give me a price on Short Round/Data to win more Oscars than Harrison Ford and Josh Brolin combined”

Lol I’ve got to start taking pics of this shit.

Just got back from another Sydney rental inspection (with the missus in tears)

Cause we drove out into the suburbs to go see a place that looked (in the online pics for the ad) pretty average / poor but not too crack den-ish (our standards have dropped) for $650.

Yeah, they were very selective with the pics they chose. Giant cracks running from the floor to ceiling the width you could nearly put your fingers into.

Doors missing off kitchen cabinets and drawers. A stove that belonged in a museum. Carpets that look like they were found in a bin and loosely stapled to the floor by a drunk. Mold all over the walls and ceiling. Exposed wires hanging out of the phone / internet port.

The sheer gall of it.

Probably foreign owned too.

My career doesn’t exist in Adelaide. The hope was to move here, advance our careers, make some money so we could afford the house we wanted in Adelaide and come back home before the baby girl is 3-ish years old

Unfortunately $40k+ sunk into IVF (that wasn’t necessary and didn’t work due to a misdiagnosis) work shutdowns due to covid and rental hikes mean we’ve gone backwards.

Our home loan deposit is way less than it was before coming here and homes in Adelaide have probably gone up by 100k in the time since we’ve left. My Mum has inoperable cancer and wont come close to making it until our planned return to Adelaide. If I leave Sydney now I’ll never get a chance at this career again so that dream would be done.

On the bright side I’ve got an amazing 6 month old baby girl who is priceless. So all I can do amongst this mess is focus on her.
