I reckon they are as big. Especially if you look at the prices things like sports cards go for. I think you’re just not as interested as you were when you were younger.

Also due to real multi millions of dollars professionalism and sports science, the gap between the best and the rest is a lot smaller than it used to be. People like Jordan stood out due to their professionalism and dedication, that’s a minimum expectation these days

Off the top of my head I’d say:

All of these players would have been superstars in previous generations too.
Yeah completely disagree

Mahomes - Gridiron. No outright superstar yet. Dan Marino/Ellway/ Montana level still. Not close to being a house hold name outside North America.
Wemby - Basketball. No way. Not yet atleast.
Ohtani - Baseball.... yeah nobody cares
Haaland - soccer. Could be. People don't seem to warm to Man City. Might get more profile at a new club.
DuPont - rugby. Nobody cares.
Clearly - league. See above.

Bradman and uncovered wickets is such an overrated angle to add to his resume.

They also didn't bowl short back then and as soon as they did, he retired.
Lol wut
They legit changed the rules so they could never do the same short tactic thing to the same level again, in a series in 1932 (where he still averaged 56) the bouncer then stayed around post this as is was seen as one of tha main things that could slow down his average and scoring (Bradman was a quick scorer for his time too) he played more tests post Bodyline than prior

Since they've also added helmets and other protective gear. The guy legit tested for poor eyesight in the army too, that wouldn't have gone unchecked in today's age

Bradman would've been better in today's game than worse.
Full time cricketeer, better wickets, better out fields, bigger bats, can't Bodyline him due to fielding restrictions

Global Chiw. Baseball, Rugby, League especially are very regional sports. As is Cricket. 99% of Australians no sweet **** all about baseball. The Japanese, Puerto Ricans and possibly the Koreans care about baseball.. nobody else. We only hear about The World Series through movies and to fill news services at the time. Virtually nobody gives a shit. I reckon more than half the people wearing the cap down Rundle Mall wouldn't know the team and 98% couldn't name a player.

The modern version of Bodyline is basically what smart teams do to work over Travis Head, the field changes are irrelevant.
Carn

Having two behind square and 2 at square leg

With Travis head standing there with a helmet with a grill and neck guard, side cheat guard etc

Is not the same as a guy standing there with no helmet with as little as 2/3 fielders not in line or behind him.

That's before you're only allowed to bowl 2 an over at head height these days too

The head height thing is a furphy if you can bowl over the wicket consistent armpit length Travis struggles.

Yeah agreed, but that isn't the chin music that Bodyline supposedly was either
They deemed all short pitched bowling as ungentlemanly or whatever it wasn't just head high bouncers, I agree in the sense of protective gear and no leg side field loading etc. nowadays but the actual concept is still common place. If he averaged around 56 in that period it's probably more in the ballpark of where his average would be now.

Ive literally only heard of two of these guys before this thread (Haaland and Wemby)

Papa was right lol

Heh.

The missus' boss has/had a father with dementia who was up and down for some time before finally being put into palliative care about a week ago. He unfortunately passed away shortly after a few days ago.

What my missus didn't know until today was that he was one of a pair of identical twins. They both had dementia and were in the same home.
At this point I thought the story was leading to the identical twin showing up at the funeral and scaring the shit out of everybody.

Joe DiMaggio
Keith Hernandez
Mickey Mantle
Darryl Strawberry
Ken Griffey Jr.
Don Mattingly
Jose Conseco

Baseball players whose names I know because of the Simpsons and Seinfeld.
