It’s not quite the same.

They were winning the war on nicotine. New users had plummeted.

Then vapes came and ****ed it.
Vapes are a mixed bag. My wife smoked from 13 or 14 and it wasn't until vapes came out and she could step down dosages with that she finally was able to quit. Tobacco is easier to keep under control then alcohol or even weed. It's not easy for just anyone to grow their own stash / make their own drink.

As for alcohol it shouldn't be made illegal, as that doesn't work, but it's still too cheap and approved in this country. It shouldn't be able to be advertised. It's not a silver bullet, but the rates of vehicle accidents and violence (including domestic violence) would decrease markedly if the rate of consumption was halved in Australia.

Weed should be legal and taxed. Increase penalties for illegal growers and there's a nice revenue raiser for governments, that could go to extra health funding. I'd certainly rather encounter a 110kg muscled up stoner who wants to be my new mate whilst out, then a 110kg muscled up meth head who wants to put me in hospital.

Silly season has been a real goer this year, some of us are keeping this economy afloat despite the price of a pint creeping closer to the lobster zone. Go ahead though and enjoy your beach muscles and illegal weed. I'll be out here single handedly keeping the pubs and the Social Contract alive

Jeebus Andre. I know your a "my body, my temple" kind of guy, but if you think alcohol is too cheap in this country. You don't get out much.
Alcohol should be expensive (unpopular opinion here and in Australia in general). As one of the socially inept, I get the appeal of relaxing the inhibitions, but the downsides across society massively outweigh it's good points. If it didn't lead to a lot of violence and increased medical costs, I'd be happy for people to get themselves pissed on 50c pints and crawl into (or die) in a ball in the gutter. It does have those massive downsides though.

Kids effectively stopped smoking and it was done.

Vapes completely reversed the trend.

On our cigarette prices. Mate of mine who is half aussie but born in hong kong came for a visit recently and outright stopped smoking because where he lives in vietnam atm has like a pack of 60 for 9 AUD.

It was like 60+ here and it actually made him stop smoking while he was here, eventually shaking the habit entirely so there is that!

I'd have stopped them for under 25's, so effectively allowing those already smoking to use them, but not encourage a new generation of nicotine addicts. Or allow them on prescription, to help smokers quit.

Possibly the wrong thread, but hope all have a joyful and happy time of Yule over Xmas and the New Year.

Especially for those doing it tough financially, missing family, or with severe health issues.
May you get to enjoy life just a little bit more than usual, even if only for a few days.

They're flat out illegal and I can buy them over the counter at maybe 7 different shops 15 minutes walk from my house. Pack of darts $20 black market too. Legislation and tax maybe is not working right now

What about a huge junk food tax? if a big mac cost 100 bucks and packet a cheetos was 50 bucks might be less fat fukcs ramped outside the RAH.
I'm all for a sugar tax. I know you're being a smart arse, but just encouraging people to have smaller sizes at fast food places, or shockingly, get something healthier, because it's just as, if not cheaper, would do wonders for the country. It doesn't need to be $100 a big Mac (WTF is anyone eating those anyway? If you want a burger any other chain's are better), just enough to tip enough people into choosing better options. Even just shifting people from full sugar soft drinks to zero sugar ones would help. So many (b)millions to be saved in health costs (heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer) etc.
