I think even some purists would've been ok with a stand up from full mount at several points in this one.

It’s supposed to be a fight. If you can just enact the smother anaconda game to win it’s not a great look for the future of the heavyweight division. Stand them up or allow head buts or. I’ll stop. Disappointing fight.

Terrible main event. No GnP was bizarre, had mount for what 10 mins? Solid performance I guess but wins no fans.

Jones bodies him, not that we'll ever see it.

Really looking forward to next weekend

Interesting discussion about this one.. So apparently he broke the record for dominant top control, with over 21 out of 25 mins.

I can see both sides of the coin in this one. Positions like Back control and mount are considered dominant positions in MMA - with the onus on the person on bottom to do something to escape. This was the main argument for Islam supporters in the 1st Volk fight, which I get.

If Islam sat on his back every round and stopped threatening submissions after the 1st round, would the referee be threatening him to fight or be stood up?

FWIW I agree that it was a boring fight, but I sat firmly in the camp of 'Lewis needs to show something here' rather than Almeida bearing all the criticism.

He should bear the criticism though, he was the one in dominant positions and did nothing with them?

Hes also the one near a title shot, fighting at home, against a guy on short notice.

You can play it safe and collect the win bonus but people can also call you boring for it

Absolutely you can. I agree, it was boring. There's no denying it.

It was boring. They both were. Almeida was boring and was found out to be a much more one-dimensional fighter than people previously were aware of.

I'm saying that it takes 2 to tango, Lewis rarely displayed any urgency to escape, he hopped up without breathing heavy at the end of round 5 which was telling.

While the referee showed his frustration - my main point is that he still can't threaten the stand up when you're holding the mount position.

I don't think Lewis deserves much blame really. He 'could' have shown more urgency but it isn't him in dominant position, he needs to do what he needs to do to survive. Mission accomplished.

20 odd mins of dominant position and no significant strikes or ever near a finish. That's on one guy IMO but maybe I'm giving Lewis too much credit lol.

That might be the case - if the mission was be dominated for 25 mins, interesting take on mission accomplished.

I'd have thought mission accomplished would be to.. win? Or at the very least, leave it all out there and erase all doubt of what could've been.

I can't imagine Lewis or his coaches consider 'surviving' mission accomplished at all.

Lol poor wording. I mean once hes down his mission is to survive (or get up but he'd have gassed trying too hard here). Surviving the round and getting the stand up again, mission accomplished

To not finish with 20 mins of mount or whatever it was is sadder than Lewis just stalling and surviving

I dunno I think all things considered he did ok, Morales looks a super talent he's a top 5 fighter very soon

Yeah, just frustrating to see him accept losing the decision. Needs a plan B if the boxing isn't working

Yeah I agree but I think Morales is much better on the mat aswell. Kid was just too long and too good at judging distance. He was never there for any shots to land
