Impartial observer, Richmond fan, saw most of the game.

The umpiring was atrocious, soft kicks going St Kilda's way and soft free kicks for goal. Those soft free kicks were not paid the other way. Almost cost them before the 4th quarter, the umpiring was the difference in the game.

Would have been a travesty, twice in three games.

Wasn't too impressed with the Sydney vs. Geelong umpiring either, so it's almost three in three, but I guess I am biased.

Saints seemed to be totaly blessed especially the first few minutes of third quarter - that dive by Riewoldt would do Mathew Lloyd proud. Gave the Saints a good lead - well done Swans to out think and out play them in the 4th.

I really hope Scott Mclaren and Darren Goldspink don't get a run in the grandfinal. Because both have been absolute crap all year and especially tonight.

sydneys dodgy style of play atracts free kicks. dont blame the umps. they were all there

The Swans have a shutdown style of play maybe that leads to having free kicks awarded against them more then most.

But there is no way all those free kicks were there tonight. The umpiring was poor in the first half, they crucified the Swans in the third quarter, and even in the last the Swans got the worse of the umpiring (that holding the ball in the last quarter was a disgrace).

What? And the prissy style of the Eagles doesn't attract frees either?

The best effort of Sydney in closing down the game was in the last quarter when they kicked 5 goals in three minutes. No free kicks, no supposed influence from the umpires in 'cleaning up' their game. At the 2 minute mark Tim Lane on channel ten makes a very pointed comment about the free kick situation. 8 kicks to 1 in the third. One umpire had paid 7 frees to 1 and the other 6 to 1. "A bit controversial" he said. Lane didn't mention the word "dodgy" or "style of play" once. I trust his analysis far more highly than the comments in this forum.

McLaren is the worst umpire in the history of the AFL.

Hates Sydney and Essendon particularly, hates Melbourne as well.

May possibly hate other clubs as well, don't know. Probably does.

Umpiring was very soft tonight, I'll admit we had the run of it during the third quarter and perhaps it created a false impression on the scoreboard.

Although most fell our way, I wouldn't go as far as saying it was biased - it was just plain crap. There were a lot of soft frees paid and a lot of others - particularly for push in the back - that weren't. After they'd paid five or so free kicks in the opening minutes of the third to St Kilda, there were a couple of blatant ones that weren't given - obviously they were looking for square-ups only. Why the count blew out in the first place is a bit of a mystery.

Anyway, better team on the day won, nuff said. I'm pretty upset with how we played, at least in last year's prelim everyone had a genuine dig only to lose by a goal. There were a lot of passengers out there tonight, we were smashed in the ruck, our midfield was helpless and the backline was just too slow and loose in the last quarter.

Here's hoping to an injury-free 2006.

He can't just come out and call it dodgy, at the risk of getting blasted by vlad and co. and all sorts of ramifications...

The umpires were doing their best to get a victorian team into the finals, and failed.

As a Swans supporter, I wasn't happy with the umpiring. It wasn't the frees they paid to St Kilda (as most of them were there - even the 50m that led to Hayes' goal), but the ones they didn't pay to Sydney for similar infringements they paid fresss to St Kilda for.

All we want is consistent umpiring, with the rules being the same for both teams.

If McLaren umpires the Grand Final, 3 umpires today will have had absolute shockers!

Amen to that... we gave plenty away.. but for the Saints to get pinged for almost nothing was unbelievable...

Fingers crossed for consistency in the GF

Unless it is a blatantly obvious free - dont pay it - I think all supporters could live with that.

Yeah OK by the rules of the book they were there - but c'mon.
I am wrapped the Swans won, so I can say the umpiring in favour of the Saints is what is putting me off the game more and more these days.

Disgrace - wake up to yourself umpy's - You try to hard to be part of a game you never had a chance of playing cause u are a pack of pussies. :(

That was absolutely woeful - bloody Scott McLaren - how was Barry at half time!!

On the issue of umpiring in finals I reckon its put down the whistle unless it is a blatantly obvious free - some of the 50 metres decisions were soft as butter - particularly for holding after the whistle when it was plain as dog's balls that the St Kilda player intended to play on.

Considering it was the saints flooding the mid-field, flooding the swans forward line all night, I think you may wish to re-tract that comment

we give away more frees for going hard at the ball or spoiling marks. Swans give away more frees for holding players around the stoppages and give away 50s for holding up the player with the free kick. Everyone know sydney gives away the most frees and that is why, much like essendon a few years ago. If it was like basketball and you could get sent off for giving away too many frees, swans would be screwed

it took you 3 quarters to learn that these thing wont be tolerated and made for some good free flowing wooty in the last quarter

I think we are on the same one here - There is NO WAY in such a tight contest at the time that a goal should have been scored from that. The saints dude has marked it and the swans guy was just blocking a path where it looked to me the Saints dude was going to play on. Umpire calls you stepped over the mark (how many times has that been let go this year) 50 metre penalty from centre of G RESULT Goal (Not Right).

50 metre rule needs to be looked at :(

some of the worst umpiring we have seen all year , it's almost as if some of the umpires knew they had missed out on the gf and couldn't give a rats how they performed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
