Under-19 Stars who Amounted to Nothing

Never seen any Pies u-19 Games but I was wondering to the people who know did we have any Superstar Kids who Amounted to Nothing in Senior Footy?

Also like the story behind them if possible

Mark Orval is the story that stands out above the rest.

Was an absolute superstar in the late 80's, but once out of the under 19's he just couldn't get on the park.

Best comparison is obviously to Rusling, as Orval was a fast moving forward who could have been a gun, but injuries ruined that.

Only played 7 games for the pies, was such a pity, he would have been part of our 1990 premiership team without a doubt.

Terry Keays had Orval covered as a story. Perhaps the most talented youngster of the 86'/90' era. If they had a draft as it is now, he would have been a standout #1.

Glen Sandford was another who couldn't make the transition.

What dud they do in the U-19 That made them Special?

Terry Keays played in the famous 1986 under 19 premiership side and he was only 15 going on 16 from memory but was a fully grown muscular man.

I was 182cms and 83kgs at the time (and 18yo) but he was a couple of cms taller at least and probably 90kgs. He had an enormous physical advantage over other kids and could really play.

In the end though, I think as he got older other people caught up to him physically. I'm talking in open age footy of course. He also probably wasn't as prepared as some others to work really hard because he had it so good early.

The most freakish player from that side was Athas Hrysoulakis. That kid could really take a hanger and do the unbelievable. In the end though he was the wrong size to really make it, being only about 6 foot tall and lightly built.

drafted Heath Shephard "The Freak" in '88 I think under F/S. Kicked 5 goals and took an absolute screamer on debut against st kilda at vic park. Only played 11 games in 2 years, went to tassie, and then played 4 games for the bears.

Mark McGough.

On debut won the ANZAC Day Medal. At the time interestingly was also the youngest player in the AFL, so naturally he had everyone thinking that he would be the next Nathan Buckley.

Great wet weather footballer, but had a poor disposal which lead to his very short career at AFL level.

This is a shit thread. Most under 19 players never "made it." For example, Glen Sanford had a better career in South Australia than most posters here had anywhere, me included. He also played seniors for the Pies. The idea of under 19s and the ressies back in the day was to give a bunch of kids a chance. Most obviously didn't make it and 20 years ago the pubs were filled with guys who played under 19s for Collingwood. It was a better system than the draft that we have now which rewards mediocrity. The 1990 Pies team had a good number of guys who came through the under 19s.

Jason Croall (sp?)

Andrew Tranquilli

I saw a kid play U19 for Hawthorn, Tony Battle he killed them, never heard of him again

There was a Collingwood U19s game in the early 90s where they kicked 47 goals against Carlton (seriously). Think team included Sav. Didn't see (only read the score in the record the week after) but would have loved to have been there.

I've known Keaysy for a long time and he says that he was flyblown by the age of 20. He says he knew his time was up at the Pies when in the last practise match of season 1990 he kicked 6 on Jason Croall in the first half and 6 on Ron Mckeown in the second. The were both starters in the 1's and he was named on the wing in the magoos.

maybe so but keays wasn't the most disciplined bloke going around. BT with the taylor diaries and i think shawry had small pieces in their respective books about him regarding his attitude

I remember reading that too. The score sticks in my mind still, it was 47.33.315

everyone knows that BT's book was non-fiction. There were players approached by lawyers to proceed legally against Barge. Ask Keaysy and he'll tell you how much of a **** up he himself was/is. He does however say that Barge actually substituted things he done to portray other players messing up.

I remember my old man being a massive wrap on Andrew Tarpey. Ended up being a Sandringham superstar.

Keays is President of Lalor Stars C.C.

Tarpey was a real good player. Definately more talented than Kelly and Starcevich and about the same as Christian. Never got a look in due to being a local. He copped a hammering at a night club and never really recovered.
