Shows you hadn't heard much about that you put on randomly and turned out awesome?

With the internet I rarely just chuck something on without digging deep, but there's been a few over the years.

Shows with lesser fanfare and may not be on top 10 or even top 50 lists.

Here's my list:

The Staircase

A show surrounding the mysterious death of author Michael Peterson’s wife. Ended up being really compelling and extremely well acted.

The Offer

Goes into the creation of The Godfather and revolves around the producer and the crazy shit he went through. Makes you super keen to watch The Godfather afterwards.

PainKiller

A lot of people seem to think Dopesick did it better (which I haven't seen). This was great to me anyway and deep dived into an epidemic I had no idea about.

Time

Only 3 episodes but as good as it gets. Short and sweet.

Des

Another with only 3 episodes but very compelling and well worth a watch.

Time goes for about 3 hours in S1, its a quality show about consequences of the decisions you make and the repercussions.

There is a S2, although no connection to S1 and is standalone.

I saw it had a season 2 when making this thread and also saw it didn’t have Bean and Graham in it. Not sure it’s worth checking out without those two.

100% its definitely not at all on the same level as S1 and not to mention totally unrelated and a separate story.

In another thread I recently recommended HBOs Generation Kill (2008) - a pretty honest and cynical miniseries based on a book documenting the first invasion of US Marines into Iraq. Sort of a very messed up road movie.

It was pretty hyped on its release but has largely been lost to time and I never see it mentioned anywhere compared the other shows of the era.

One of my absolute favourite TV experiences of all time.

Could Freaks and Geeks be filed under this topic? Is my all time favourite series and iirc was run at 11pm on Channel 9 when it was on FTA. Hardly anyone would have known it was on.
100%.

Rarely see people talk about this show anymore, and it is one of the best ever.

Go watch the Staircase on Netflix, the documentary and be prepared to be blown away more and forget the trash that is that series above. You won’t believe the real life tale.

I saw the lawyer featured when they came to Australia in 2019 with the Making a Murderer lawyers

At the end he told us he had one regret, which I won’t spoil for you now

Those that know, know.

Its rather incredible for a show to be rated so highly in the US yet only get 1 season is unheard of.

The irony being is that when it aired the ratings were low, which is why it was cancelled.

A TV show that had a similar experience in terms of ratings is The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Afaik the scheduling (In the US) really screwed it over apparently.

What did you think of the final episode? Clearly they were just rushing a finale and it was made at short notice. It wasn't a bad episode, it just felt completely out of place and therefore a letdown. Every single other episode felt right and that it belonged. And Ben Stiller's cameo was classic.
