without knowing the full story, from what i understand the whole setup of the US is that all the states chose how to run their own show, the Fed govnt is only their to oversea.. basically the individual states have the power to run their state how they see fit, hence why diff states have diff laws.

It arcs back to the founding of the country and the colonies not wanting to hand over too much power to the newly established federal government. The colonies wanted to be the ones to decide which candidate got their electoral votes. No way North Carolina were going to have some dude from Massachusetts tell them how to go about doing this.

its a MUCH bigger problem than most appreciate

firstly, the issue is the constitution says that the legislature determines electoral borders and such

its why in the secretary of state in most states runs the elections. having a bi-partisan electoral commission (like for PA) is unusual, and you can literally count on one hand how many have an independent electoral commission (like the AEC)

the problem is many americans treat the constitution as a religious document, so when it says "the legislature will run elections" they interpret that literally.

Secondly you have zero change of 50 states agreeing to allow elections to be a federal power. They are MASSIVE on states rights, and the small states would fight this on the grounds that electoral processes would be dominated by the needs of NY/LA/Chicago, and not smalltown USA

Then you have Americans believing they are the masters of democracy. they believe the founding fathers are like democracy gods, and their reasoning cannot be questioned. The fact the EC was designed to get slave states to sign on to the union is ignored, and its defended as being a foundation to democratically electing a president. The fact Tuesday in November was chosen to allow farmers to vote ignores that most people now are impacted by this one move. None of this will change however because "tradition!"

Yep, you can't take their guns and you can't take their "democracy."

FMD, how did this mob ever become a global superpower?

Surely the fairest system is most votes wins. One person, one vote. Any other system places more importance over some votes than others.
I've always maintained that the EC apportionment (which is mostly based on HoR numbers) should be skewed to smaller states to protect their interests from being overwhelmed by the largest states.

But having a difference of 3.5 times voting power from the smallest state to the largest is so far out of whack it's not funny. And it's not due to an outlier state on either end. That 3.5 figure should never be more than 2.

My opinion anyway. I can certainly see first past the post being people's preferred method.

Another glaring problem that I didn't see telsor complain about.

World's greatest democracy holds its federal elections on a working day.

Geezus.

How are you doing big fella?
I'm coping, thanks for asking. My bub's final ultrasound came back all good /normal, I try to focus on that. My sincere congrats to all the anti Trump types, it's been one hell of a ride.

It's a funny ole tribal place, this bigfooty. You meet em all m8.

Im sure Trump will come out and calm the nation down....

Thats what he is good at...

Trump to come out and speak eloquently and appear dignified and presidential. He'll probably speak at length about the value of America's institutions and about the importance of democracy and of unity. He'll probably say something like 'although I have lost, we have all won by exercising the democratic principle.' He will no doubt evoke the legacy of Lincoln and of the need for smooth a transition of power and its importance as a safeguard against tyranny. Gonna be some real West Wing shit from Trump.
