this x 100.
I played in the VAFA for 15 years and have umpired for 5.
It is rewarding, fun, challenging a good way to keep half fit.
Not enough ex players are being encouraged to try out. Emphasis on youth always. Reckon they should look for retiring 35 yo's too !!

If an ex player comes and umpires a year - their ex playing club should get $400 off next years affiliation fee if they umpire a dozen games, or something like that
They had this system for for 5 or so years. They didn't really get many, clubs want people to stay involved in other roles other than playing especially as clubs grow with adding more and more teams, it's not a silly idea to attract people to umpiring from ex players but its not the sole solution. Umpiring takes time to learn and it's not for everyone, many try it and most find it a lot harder than they 1st thought.

Love to hear the views of pazza. A longtime umpire who is still inside the tent and who is always measured with his views.

HOC will be missed by the rank and file. His enthusiasm knew no bounds. Whoever gets the role now will have massive shoes to fill. In general terms the growth of umpiring has been something to behold in my time there. I think back to 1997. Just the goalies themselves would cover 40 on the books, It's basically double that now. More work needs to be done - the satellite training venues at Bulleen and Westbourne need to be supported. But, if we take the incoming VAFAUA President at his word, this will happen. But, in all honesty, the umpiring side of it is going pretty well.

Whats the depth and quality like among the goalies at the moment pazza ? are the gaps from the retirements of the guys in it for the really long haul like AD and Dom being filled?

Pretty strong. You will probably find that top 30 is perhaps the youngest it has ever been. Still - us oldies (I guess i had better include myself in that lot) will be going as well we can.

Can we still maintain amateur status as a league given all these ex-AFL players?
Granted this probably only applies to the premier sections
Money directly or indirectly through schooling ect still means one thing to me... a financial advantage to someone.

IMO the amateur meaning is a loose term but all clubs in the VAFA are playing under the same rules so good luck.

Unfortunately it makes it a fools errand for many lower division clubs actually finding premier success as their networks simply don’t exists and never will.

No name huh ? Kelly 😘 there you go love would you like his number too?
Well you had to have his name prised out didn’t you?

This approach of providing free stuff is as old as the hills. We all know it happens, and has happened for decades. If a club has access to people who will donate/provide benefits to recruit players, so be it.

Very true , but is it right for the comp going forward.

The thing that I think is worth noting is that these benefits don't just exist to recruits. Any player at a club from the u19s through to the clubbed and up to the ones can use those contacts and networks to get ahead but when they recruit they might just be more upfront about what they can do and how far the network can reach.
In my days I was never more than the 15th bloke selected in the twos but the old boys network that was open to me despite not being an old boy has very much set me up for life.
So as long as the network exists for all and not just an elite few, I feel there is no problem.

The problem with turning a blind eye to what may be viewed as minor contraventions of the Amateur Status Guidelines - interesting they choose 'Guidelines' - is that it gives naysayers more than a little wiggle room to push the shamateurism cart.

There may be more, but the only blatant major contravention of the guidelines where folding stuff was offered only saw the light of day when the player self reported. Somehow doubt had that not occurred we'd be any the wiser today.

I'm a progressive in most ways but when it comes to what is regarded as 'amateur' in our comp, I'd much prefer the stricter approach of by-gone years. Leaving the gate ajar is fraught with issues as I see it.

I'm not sufficiently close to the scene to know how widespread the minor contraventions may be, but frankly, Hedge, you wouldn't have to be a theoretical physicist to game the system as it presently exists.

How do you think the proposals put by Bear in that piece will significantly change the status quo, Hipp?

Not a lot of change is needed fortunately AM. But continued monitoring of the system, adjusting when and where required, keeping up the rigorous interviewing of new players can only booster what is already great. No trumping needed...

But, Hipp, that runs counter to the position 'Bear' was putting in the Ando piece. He's concerned about the same teams monopolising the Prem spoils. He said:

I just don't think his brief response to that concern would give any comfort to the less affluent clubs.

Your apparent 'nothing to see here' response will do zilch to redress the matters which our grand poobah acknowledges need addressing.

That’s where any required adjustments come in. Monitor and act. Simple.
