Alex on Fire has a point.

I dont doubt VB is a great leader on the track, and sets the right example, especially off the field.

However, he does not have a presence, an aura or a charisma. He is not inspiring in any way shape or form. He's clean cut, plain and boring as bat droppings.

Therefore, he's the obvious choice for our club.

Which is exactly the point. Some irate supporters don't like VB or this leadership group because it isn't exciting. What they don;'t understand is that the leadership group is there for the players, the team, development & winning games, not for you to feel all gooey inside.

Most people have skipped over the fact that 1/3rd of their dreams came true, and Symes has been removed.

And Maric has been removed. Everyone seems to love his "follow me and fight" leadership, but obviously it's not recognised.

There is NO WAY that Sloane gets into the leadership group. Danger is a little unlucky, but as mentioned, he's got game to work on too.

A favourite of mine too.

I was lucky enough to be at that game. We had no idea he had hurt himself until the players were going around the ground at the end to say thanks to the fans and we saw him with the arm in the sling and asked him what happened. He had a big smile on his face and was just, 'oh broke my collarbone I think'. Happiest person in pain I've seen in a long time. ;)

I actually think he does, it's not in the same would as mark Ricciuto or Michael Voss did but he still does have that presence, aura and charisma a leader needs.

The AFC is at a cross road right now, we need to look forward and push more player through that vacuum as leaders, not hold them back by relying on a select few who have does it in the past.

You can't be serious? So you are telling me people from outside the club are more qualified to make a decision .

No, thats why I used the term 'within the club'. Are you really that stupid, or do you make a special effort for me?

Apologies to myself for replying to one of your posts. I promised myself a while ago that I would never do it again.

(face returns to palm)

You dont think that a bloke like Brett Burton (for instance only) would be more qualified on the matter than say Jarryd Lyons (again, only for instance).

Because Lyons is the player being mentored and Burton is working for another club now. They might have different styles or personalities. There can be generation gaps that others don't understand. Or players might have matured or change. And in any case, Burton would definitely pick Dogga & Stevens and Thommo or whoever else would have been a distant last.

At least we aren't like Port, and have Jay Schulz in the leadership group (they had a player led vote too)

Fast forward 3 years, our team has improved significantly because our juniors have come on and we are chance for a premiership. Because for us to be contenders this is where the improvement needs to come from. What position will VB be playing?

Not sure why people are surprised by this, its vintage crows going for the safe option

Who's suprised? I don't think anyone is.

Most clubs do go with the safe option and appoint their best leader as captain, for obvious reasons.

It's the surprise choices that are always the controversial ones.

Who would you replace Stevens and Dogga with then?

Unlike some others here:rolleyes: Im not close enough to the playing group to make that call. From the outside guys like Sloan and Dangerfield look to be of good quality.

My issue is really with both Stevens and Doughty being there. I'm disappointed that we dont have a policy to put one of the appropriate younger guys in there, if for nothing more than experience.

Now we just need Beau Waters to captain the Eagles and we will have 2 south aussie captains of the WA teams and two west aussie captains of the SA teams

Midfield.

If VB doesn't come on and flounders, there will be another vote and he won't remain in the leadership group. This would be similar to Maric and Symes, who arguably have big question marks over their spots in the side and have now been kicked out of the leadership group.

The Ray McLean programme always for and encourages constant renewal. The counter-arguments here are hilarious. Any other method would have most likely ended in a more conservative result. A 24 year old captain is clearly indicative of renewal imo. Stevens & Doughty, as frustrating as they are for spectators are still best 22 players and obviously have earned the respect of their peers. I'll trust the opinion of the players over BF.

I think Brett will be pre-occupied with his job at another club....

Ofcourse Lyons won't be as informed as other players. For instance he won't have played any games with anyone. However, you don't have to play games with players to know their leaders. You know leaders, and you know footy leaders when you've been playing all our life.

I'd rather have Lyons vote than a player who's working at an opposition club.

People will disagree with this list but I'd consider in no particular order these players in my 'automatic' selections list going into 2011 (based on football performance/potential to win a future premiership):

Otten, Rutten, Johncock, Tambling, Davis, Mackay, Thompson, Vince, Knights, Henderson, Porplyzia, Tippett, Walker, Jacobs, Dangerfield, Sloane, Douglas (cannot drop the B&F and he deserves his automatic status at present).

That's 17 players, not counting Reilly who is very close to automatic due to his success at a specific role. vB would be added but i don't think his disposal has enough hurt factor to be considered a top AFL player so unless he has a defensive role primarily, I'd rather others.

Adding Reilly, there are 3+1 spots left...depending on the line-up it would need a HBF, 2nd ruck option, smallish forward/mid option, utility 22nd man.

Looks like Doughty, Stevens, vB and a 2nd ruck need to be squeezed in here! I've often thought vB would be a good 22nd man actually:thumbsu:

I assume we'll rely on injury to get Jaensch, Martin, Petrenko, Talia, Gunston etc etc into the team?

So, token appointment?

That is what the backbone group is for.

Noone is stopping our young guys from leading because they don't have a 'title'. Just you try and shut Sloane up, the mouth from the south.

Danger, Sloane, Davis etc will all continue to lead and develop.
