Agree with most of the things said here. Brown and Vardy look the goods but there is no rush for them to play ones. Christiansen is classy and will be a player. Hunt was handy but didn't put his hand up for promotion. Liked schroeders effort

Re: AFL Round 7 - Geelong v North Melbourne, Skilled Stadium, 2:10PM Saturday 7 May

agree with all your comments rabbi.vardy has put on bulk and is ready now.brown will be better long term but isnt ready yet.gillies is very disappointing, even the basketballerhad more intensity than him today i felt.we really lack tall defender depth.cowan west and burbs were all with joel and looked fine.duncs was there too.we just rested a lot of them, very weak side today.

Vary and Brown drew praise during the call on the radio, as did Bathie who was said to 'move well and find good position, although he needs to work on his spoiling',

I also partially heard some comments about players being left out in anticipation of a hard ground, which actually ended up wet and heavy! I must admit I didn't hear the full context of these comments though, and may stand corrected that they did not apply to the GFC and / or players in question.

Did Brown finish with 5 in the end?

Let's pray he doesn't get injured again!

I had him down for 5. So the answer is yes,.... unless I am wrong.

My thoughts on the first three quarters:

On the result, the slow start was the difference. We could hardly get hands on it in the first quarter and every time they went forward they seemed to score. From the second quarter, our intensity lifted significantly and it was more a 50:50 proposition. Leaving Raphael Clarke unmarked at half back was infuriating as was our continued insistence in kicking it to him.

I didn't have a record so could only really pick the recognisable players. Off the top of my head they were:

Brown - an AFL class player, no doubt. Forget about the comments on his size, he is capable of playing 3rd tall now and would contribute more than Mooney as 2nd tall. Beautiful mover, reads it well, nice kick and sticky hands. Kicked 3 in the 2nd quarter and I think finished with 5.

Vardy - spent most time forward and relief rucked for Blake. He is a great size, lovely leap, good hands and nice kick. He should get AFL games in 2011 on today's performance. He is a more likely prospect than West in my view. Seems to be a more natural player.

Christensen - another who looked a class above the level although he found the going tougher without the bigger AFL bodies around him. I love his hardness, his clean skills and his decision making. Looks every bit a 200 gamer.

Guthrie - hardly sighted in the first half but he came alive in the third quarter kicking two goals, one from a hanger in the goalsquare. At this level he seems mature beyond his years and when he is able to bring that to AFL level we will have a great, composed, neat midfielder.

Motlop - he was quiet but showed some good signs. Would have liked to see him more front and square when Brown and Vardy were flying for marks.

Hunt - a pretty typical Hunt game - some good and some bad. He repelled quite a lot of Sandy forward thrusts and made some good spoils. However didn't use his kicking as well as he should have and I heard that he had quite a few goals kicked on him early (although I couldn't tell who he was marking). Would not promote him on that performance.

Gillies - a bit disappointing. Doesn't seem to do a lot with the ball and his man can get the better of him. My doubts weren't eased at all today.

Blake - standard Blake game.

Get one of Brown or Vardy in next week, I am agnostic which one but one of them should definitely play.

Need to just take the plunge. The good ones contribute from the get go.

Very small ground. The team with any sort of run on was able to score quickly.

Egan and Hayes were there bringing style to their crutches. :thumbsu:

J.Selwood stopping for photos with children and their mothers. :thumbsu:

No BBQ as far as i could see. Had to settle for pie & hot-dog.

Peake and Raph Clarke got plenty of it for them, should see them re-called to St Kilda, which is unlucky for the Saints because they're both disgustingly bad footballers. :p

Good to catch up with Partridge. Did a lap around the oval with Mackie, could not find #31, were you there PO? Mackie is my whippet btw.

Was impressed with Brown, Vardy, Guthrie, and a tall defender ? Walker, ? Bathie. Don't know their numbers. Brown is not THAT slight, looks ready to impress in the 1's. Vardy will be a gun.

His legs look ok. It is his upper body that is slight and needs the gym work. But I suspect that the club are taking it slowly in the gym given his shoulder surgery.

Mark Blake put in a good hearted effort i thought. he took some risks at boundary throw-ins where on at least 5 occasions he grabbed the ball in the ruck duel & handballed to a teammate or quickly kicked the pill.

Blake does rush his kicks though, without looking up to spot a teammate further afield. he has a habit of looking down at the ball onto his foot rather than checking the landscape up-field. so on every occasion that he put boot to ball his mungrel punts landed in the hands of the opposition. although in the last quarter he did spot Guthrie alone, quickly rushed his kick, & hit Guthrie on the chest.

i wouldn't write Blake off at this stage of the year.

Schroder showed some talent in the second half.

Mitch Brown found space in the second quarter. 3 great goals. no need for pack marks. he seems able to read the play & find space.

i liked Guthrie's 3rd quarter & Christianson's 2nd half.

I thought Blake was ok also. He is only going to play if Ottens is injured though.

I'd love to see either Brown or Vardy in but at this stage you get the feeling they will go back to Moons if he is right to play against the Roos. I think if they keep their form up for another couple of weeks they will be on the radar post the Collingwood game, especially if Hawk/Pods/Moons don't stand up in that one.

Blake is our first back up if Ottens is out, but is nowhere in the second ruckmen debate, if that makes any sense at all.

He is there purely to cover a long term injury to Ottens, which lets be honest is a pretty important position to have cover in.

Even if Ottens only misses a week we'd probably go with Vardy but Blake will come in for any serious stretch of time. Ok I think i am talking nonsense now, I am going outside in the sun.

Ok so I was speaking to a few players today and found out west has a pelvis injury will miss a few weeks, Billie is still 2 weeks away, Hogan is on compashate??? (spelling) leave, Ben Johnson will play next week...did I miss anyone?

You make complete sense. Being a Blake supporter, I agree, he is there to replace Ottens, but does not play again as a 2nd ruck. Hawkins and Vardy are better options.

I heard the same thing about Hogan, long term compassionate leave, personal reasons, have to hope all is well there.

After Guthrie's great third quarter he was pretty rock solid playing as a small defender in the backline in the last.

Thought he had a very good second half. His only flaw was turning it over a couple of times out of the backline in the last quarter. But got better and better as it went on.

Very impressed with Vardy's athleticism and physique. Can really cover the ground for a guy that size. Lovely straight kick at goal too.

Brown for me was the standout, just looks a terrific natural footballer. Seems to have excellent anticipation, took a few on the chest where he was far quicker off the mark than other players. Don't know about lack of intensity, he got one by standing at the front of a pack (and copping the hit), then dropping into the space as Christensen centred it.

Plus, he is a beautiful kick for goal. Absolutely needs more bulk, but depending on the opposition, as a third forward could already cause headaches.

Well lets hope that whoever or whatever it is that influences the goal-kicking technique of our senior forwards is kept well away from him.

I was at the game today and saw something that concerned me greatly.

Twice, I repeat twice I saw North coach Brad Scott waltzing unnoticed through the Geelong huddles at the short breaks. He was listening in to the coaches, chatting with the players, getting all sorts of insights into our club for next week's match. I thought for a professional club we would be more on top of this kind of spying.

Well, at least I think it was him. Looked a lot like him...:eek:
