VFLW VFLW 2023 - Geelong & the greater league

Welcome to 2023, and with this afternoon's announcement of Round 1 of the VFLW season, now seems a good time to kick off this thread

At this stage, I haven't seen too much about the team make-up or restrictions that'll be placed upon VFLW team clubs and AFLW signings - it seemed slightly easier in the past when there was more overlap between the two. But with talk starting to increase around potential movements within the AFLW world, hopefully we'll star to get more news about what's happening across both leagues

The following article does advise:
The 2023 rebel VFLW season will again be contested by 12 teams, with Hawthorn transferring its VFLW licence to the Box Hill Hawks. The two clubs will remain aligned, with the team to compete under the Box Hill Hawks banner.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website (afl.com.au) and AFL Live Official App. Further broadcast details will be confirmed at a later time.


And we kick off round 1 on March 25 with a home match at Deakin

“Anna has always been an outstanding leader, and she will be a great mentor for our VFLW players and aid in their development.

“It’s fantastic to see two former Cats Women’s players now taking their place among the club’s coaching ranks in Anna and Elise. With fellow former players Melissa Hickey and Cassie Blakeway with the Geelong Falcons’ girls team as senior coach and assistant coach, it shows there is a real pathway from playing to coaching for AFLW players.”

Geelong’s VFLW season kicks off against North Melbourne at Deakin University Elite Sports Precinct on March 25, with practice matches at the same venue on March 4 and 11.

One name to watch will be Poppy Schaap - former Geelong Falcon, she spent time on Carlton's AFLW list where she played 3 games across 2 seasons, kicking 3 goals in her couple of opportunities last season in matches that Carlton only kicked 6 goals...

Back in Dec she signed with our VFLW team, but this could be an opportunity for her to see how she goes in our program with a look to the mature draft ahead of the next AFLW season - we know that goal kicking has been an issue at AFLW level, so having a small forward goal sneak could be a valuable addition

Geelong has unveiled a new captain for its VFLW side, with young defender Chloe Leonard set to lead the side into 2023.

The former Greater Western Victoria Rebels captain was vice-captain last season, and will step up into the top role this season after being voted in by teammates and coaches...

...Last year’s captain Bree Beckley will remain in the leadership group, but will step down her duties as she balances her own playing career with her new role as Geelong Falcons Talent Operations Lead.

Sachi DeGiacomi and recruits Poppy Schaap and Abby Favell round out the leadership group.

I didn't really follow the old VWFL, but have a bit of knowledge of the good teams based on when the AFLW started & the playing history of various players - wasn't Darebin one of the strongest teams in the old league?

Is it a case that with the introduction of the AFLW, the change to the VFLW & merging of teams and how players are now aligned to teams, that some of those previously strong teams are now struggling?

They won five premierships in a row (3x VWFL, 2x VFLW) and had players such as Daisy Pearce, Katie Brennan, Lauren Pearce, Darcy Vescio, Karen Paxman, Mel Hickey. They lost their players once the AFLW rolled around and their recruiting has been nowhere near good since. They are long passed competing in the VFLW competition and probably don't have many seasons left.
