Mega Thread VICBias - Genuine Discussion Part 2

Hugely advantaged Vic club supporters doing their best in here to deflect and cover up the clear VICBias of the league.
Academies are where it's at. Advantage only just beginning to really kick in with the start of it: Heeney beginning to hit his peak. And we're already expecting all 4 academy teams to be at the pointy end next year. And if the academies are effective, the advantages will continue to grow through preparing more top end kids.

so you get 13 on your home ground where you either have clear home advantsge or are neutral with your opponents in home advantage. Plus 2 games elsewhere where you have clear home city and home support advantage. Thats 15 games without being disadvantaged.

Geelong has only 9 games where it has any home advantage (hopefully 10 next year). Trying to count mcg games for geelong as away games or even neutral games against teams literally from melbourne who play more games there then us and have overwhelming home support is literally crazy. Its a clear disadvantage to geelong. Geelong are disadvantaged in 13-14 games each season. Richmond only 7-8. That bias is staggering. And thats before we even get to finals.

Its hard to find a club in professional sport that is more disadvantaged in terms of away games then geelong. Im only mentioning this cos you bought it up.

Why do you think Geelong keep getting these elevated ladder positions and then bomb out in prelims ? They have a boutique home ground that gives them a massive leg up through the minor rounds and then reality hits in finals. Will be the same for Geelong and Sydney next year ..

As this thread nose dives the only real truth to emerge here is that EVERY supporter thinks their team is hard done by.
AFL the most dissatisfying of sports to follow 🙄
Pretty true.

There's various advantages strewn throughout the AFL, from Northern academies through to MCG GF and several more in-between those big ones. If you ignore your own teams advantages and focus on other teams, you're getting a raw deal.

I am always frustrated that opening round always ignores SA and WA teams. Shows the AFL priorities.

You do realise that 6 Melbourne based teams are ignored.

This Sounds right..

The AFL's dream top 4 would be 2 of Brisbane/Gold Coast/Sydney/GWS, and 2 of Collingwood/Carlton/Essendon/Hawthorn/Geelong.

The only reason the big VIC teams are drooled over is because of the bums on seats. Having too many NSW/QLD teams is bad for coffers.

Of course.

NSW/QLD - Growing the game
big VIC teams - bring in more revenue in primetime slots
SA teams and WA teams - will always bring in revenue regardless of when they play
Small Melbourne clubs - are only there because AFL needs them for the TV rights deal

Always ignores is a wee bit strong for something in it's second year.

Having said that, I think WA teams should be involved, as it it spreads out the season adding an extra week and an extra bye for the teams involved and could be used to help fixture better WA travel with less short breaks.

If its bums on seats, the Eagles would be in that mix, still drawing 40,000 while being historically shit. Even some of the so-called big Vic clubs could only dream of that.

The Eagles are almost the only club that gets big crowds to all home games no matter who the opposition is.

Always well supported but still down 25-30% on average over the last few years compared to when the Eagles are flying.
Collingwood in 2017 averaged crowds of 46,815 while finishing 13th after a couple of poor years (COVID made it harder to find a more recent example). The Eagles in 2024 averaged 43,150 after being bottom three for the past three years. Think it's safe to say the Eagles are a big four club.

Yes. They want bigger crowds to the north. Bring in big vic teams as the away team.

The Eagles don’t get the benefit of manufactured blockbusters where neutrals top up the crowds like kings birthday, Anzac Day etc
They are event days.
