had been noticing a bit of a trend that the interstate clubs tend to play very ugly defensive football while the vic clubs are much more attacking and exciting to watch. have some stats to back it up now too.

matches this season involving two vic teams:
average score per team: 100.43
times team has scored over 100 points: 17 from 20 games, 42.5%.

matches involving one vic side and an interstate side:
ave. score: 87.74
times team has scored over 100 points: 15 from 21 games, 35.7%

matches involving two interstate sides:
ave. score: 74.86
times team has scored over 100 points: 2 from games, 14.3%

and before you non-vics jump up and down and say yeah but you vics still lose all the time. thats not my point, what im trying to raise here is about the style of play and these stats seem pretty clear in illustrating that point.

i re-calculated it without the geelong game. the average score then is 98.16. so still doesnt affect the main point im raising.

I'd say the reason would been teams like the swans the crows the eagles actually have a descent backline.

Interesting point. I guess you can also take into account that Adelaide and Sydney are the AFLs two biggest flooders and usually in their games the winning team will be lucky to kick 12 goals.

i think it's especially due to sydney and adelaide. port and brisbane dont seem to be too bad.

FREO - not ugly footy just not always accountable footy
WCE - Would score tonnes more if we kicked straight - hardly ungly footy
PORT - Extremely fast, no ugly floods
BRISBANE - Again youngsters causing speed, rarely flood

Congratulations, only Adelaide and Sydney play what you would call ugly footy

Crows - Isnt it something like theyve scored over a hundred points in 14 of their last 27 matches... Not bad for such an ugly defensive team
Swans - like the crows play tough contested footy, which can be entertaining to watch, (Unless you prefer getting 20 cheap disposals in the backline without moving the ball foward one bit)

Just because games arent high scoring doesnt mean that they are ugly games

Of course this year, the Hawks and Sainst do enjoy that flood :D Essendon playing a lot of chipping footy this year... As for the others they are simply inconsistent while other teams make cringeworthy mistakes

im a bit young to know about the sanfl/wafl before the crows and eagles came and changed things. back before that, was the vfl higher scoring than sanfl and wafl? was there much difference in style between the state leagues?

SANFL was higher scoring than the VFL. And I think so was the WAFL.

check below stats. Interesting to see that the best 5 defences are non victorian teams and the top 4 attacking teams are victorian teams...

check out the victorians defence though...they have the 3 worst defences in the competition and 10 out of the worst 11 defences which obviously skewes the total score per game figures (the last stat)

from the total scores per game its obvious to see that the Crows are the most boring team in the competition. Sydney and West Coast games arent really full of scoring either.

lets look at teams though..
Carlton. Highest scoring games but thats pretty much due to their defence being ordinary conceding 128 points per game.
Geelongs high score was helped tonight with that thrashing on Richmond
Richmonds total score per game is high aslo due to them being the worst defence in the competiton.

My conclusion is that Adelaide and Sydney are boring to watch while West Coast are also low scoring games generally. The vics scores are higher purely because their defences are not as good as the non victorian teams.

What needs to save our game is... ban the flood and throw tempo footy out the window (i prefer to call it chippy chip bullshit)

Also, I would have thought that the final quarter of the WC/Swans game and the majority of the Crows/Freo games were the most entertaining - better than watching one team obliterate another

But games are always entertaining when they're close, doesn't mean it's exciting footy. But then again, low scoring doesn't mean it's not exciting.

The crows tend to choke up the attacking 50 - forcing teams wide and stopping them scoring big totals. Here's a stat for you: last 4 weeks the team Adelaide has played has scored: 8.15, 5.14, 7.16, 11.20

Proof of negative footy right there, of course if it helps them win then good on them, but it's not.

The Crows have been playing especially defensive lately because of their injuries. If we went in a shootout at present we would get smashed so we try to get some ugly wins now and save the flashy stuff for later when (if) we have a fit side. Its the same thing with St Kilda and their fitness. Saying that, the best game to watch so far this season was Brisbane vs Carlton and Brisbane has an extensive injury list too.
