I travelled through Barkly this year. I stayed at the Barkly Homestead somwhere between Tenant Creek and Mt Isa. It was the only piece of green grass for hundreds of kilometers courtesy of the sprinklers. Beautiful to set your tent up on, minus the mozzies. Great drinking hole, surprisingly nice, and food too.

But there's not much out there. If we have essentially Tenant Creek and district we've likely lost out. We'd be doing ourselves a favour to lobby, and lobby hard, for the best zones. Our future may depend on it!

You'd be surprised what's tucked away off your main highways throughout this region. if your looking for numbers, your right, not much when compared to other regions. But it's so good they're getting opportunity and more exposure.

There might be some Exciting Talent that Live out in the Bush that might come to the Academy.

I remember reading the Jurrah Story and saying there could be some real exciting Talent playing in the Middle of No Where

My second favorite team out side Collingwood is Southern Districts Football Club in the NTFL. The club is located just south of Darwin. For amusement I have selected the best team from players that have passed through the club either as juniors (before AFL careers) or one year wonders that have come to the club to win premierships or money post AFL careers. You might recognize a few names. Remember even though the club is located in Darwin (Geelongs zone), the players them selves come from all over the Territory and obvious a few interstate players thrown into the mix as well. I think the AFL zoning initiative is fantastic.

More draft tampering & hiding draft prospects away. That's pretty much all it is.
Just because the AFL did not have the balls to say to NSW & QLD teams that they can't have exclusive access to the academy kids, we now have this garbage.

How about an uncompromised draft & salary cap?
Regardless of where you live, you play for the team that drafts you. That is how it was meant to be.
First we had COLA, & now academies. FFS make the same rules for everyone.

The AFL should be footing the bill for all academies & those kids that go through there should be on the open market like every other kid.
I had high hopes for Gil when he took over leadership of the AFL. But that hope was misplaced.
These guys have no friggin idea.

Agree - The AFL don't want to stop the Acadamy Cheating of the Northern Teams so they had to do something Simmlar here

The opportunity is invaluable I agree. It's a great positive from this scheme and one I agree with. I'm really glad you raised it. But I can see it being exploited and misused by the AFL. Perhaps I'm seeing the issues before the benefits. But I can see it being used to level some clubs, advance others. Given our zone experience (Ararat!) I think our club should be cautious. If zones are to be assigned to clubs, we'd be doing ourselves a diservice not to lobby for the best. Must say I think noidatall has it right, this shouldn't be linked to clubs.

So would the Change Zones after a Certain Time Period has Passed?

Shannon Rusca is a seriously, or was a seriously good footballer outside of AFL. I think he spent time on WB and BL lists for a few AFL games but his NTFL career is second to none. Pity you couldn't fit Matty Cannard in there who is another great NTFL product.

I bet you're happy Keegan Dingos report was thrown out tonight. The Southern Districts home ground would be no more than 5KM in a straight line from my house.

Do you know IF any came from the Barkley Area?

You're right and I am naive when it comes to these things. Far too much trust in a range of administrations

I'm worried about the term zoning. If there are restrictions or manipulation of drafts that result from these zones specific to clubs it could be a big fail

Frizzle just another example of the "pub game" we follow.

The AFL making rules on the run.

Unfortunately I have not seen those two guys play, Both were selected in Southern Districts team of the quarter century so they must be able to play. i also did not include Kelvin Maher regrettably.

No not really, a number are from Alice Spring/Tennant Creek region which means that they could come from either the Barkly or the MacDonnell Ranges. When asked 'where you come from' people more than likely say Alice Springs or Tenant Ck because no one knows where Kargaru, Tingkarli, Wuppa, Marla Marla, Village Camp, Munji-Marla, Ngalpa Ngalpa (Mulga) is located, just to name a few communities in the Barkly region.

Demographics of the Barkly region http://barkly.nt.gov.au/region/demographics

I know that the following family's come from central Australia and possibly the Barkly region - McAdam (Adrian/Gilbert), White (Daryl), Clarke (Raph/Xavier). Rusca(Shannon), Hill, Tilmouth and possibly Weetra from memory. There could be a lot more.

Just like they were supposed to last time? Population booms in growth corridors meant some went from strength to strength and clubs having good results didn't want to change.

Well at least it won't be as bad as the Old Zones

I reckon this is more about promoting the game and will mean more to the people in the zones than it will to the clubs.

I reckon it's long odds we will pick up anyone although that All-Australian under 15 kid sounds alright... but mainly it is to develop and promote the game.

Agree - It's more about Promoting Game and Helping Aboriginal Communities.

Though we might get the Odd Good one Come Thru
