Paul Roos gets mentioned as a potential Lions coach a bit. After watching 'On the Couch' this week I'm starting to get a bit over Roos and his non-commital, Kevin Rudd-like talk. There's 9 weeks left in the regular season, 13 including the finals and about 15 or so until next year's pre-season starts. If he wants the Brisbane or any other job then he needs to find his magic vial of 'coaching passion' pretty bloody soon. If the board hand over precious big bucks to some bloke who needs to be begged pretty please with sugar on top to come coach us then they should all be sacked. And the stuff about he wants to do it because of some Fitzroy connection - bollocks I reckon. He left the Roys for pragmatic reasons and has been connected to the Swans ever since - he's not going anywhere for love.

I'm not so sure. Can you imagine the shitstorm if he were to publicly say "yep, I'm interested"? Pressure instantly goes onto clubs and coaches, it gets raised in player interviews, and then there's his current employers Sydney to consider. Next thing you know Bruce and Dennis will be hosting "Roos - The Decision" where he announces live on air where he's taking his talents...

If he is interested or is in discussions (with us or anyone), I think discretion is a wise move for the time being.

Melbourne do not deserve any more help than they are getting.
Paying out one coach and getting them a new one, is too much in my opinion.
Rewarding incompentence does not sit right with me.
A lot of things the AFL are doing,or not doing . at the moment, stink actually.

Roos has said he's out until his kid finishes Yr.12 which is later this year. I think once this happens, his hand will raise rather quickly.

I am surprised that no media personalities have brought this up before Voss. Regardless of how Vic centric the media is, almost everyone I've seen questioned about if Melbourne deserve priority picks have said draft concessions aren't the answer, yet no-one has pointed out about how the draft concessions have crippled the clubs in the bottom half of the ladder. I am convinced that the Geelong and Hawthorn domination over the past 6 years has been partly due to the bottom clubs having a hugely diluted draft pool to pick from because of priority picks and expansion clubs. If they continue to dilute the talent at the top end of the draft by handing out priority picks to "speed up" the rebuild of certain clubs, the ones that manage to just stay off the bottom will never have a chance to get back on top again.

Great to see Voss weigh in. Melbourne getting another priority pick is a massive spitball in the face of Brisbane and Port.

Not only that, but surely the success of West Coast & Port are proof that the whole priority pick system is flawed.
West Coast went (2008-2010) 15th, 11th, 16th, to (2011, 2012) 4th, 5th, without a priority pick.
Port went (2011-2012) 16th, 14th to (2013) 8th after 13 rounds, without a priority pick.

Brisbane have been hanging around the bottom for a while, but at least competitive over the past 12 months (with the notable exception of the early rounds this season). Brisbane can rightly be blamed for their own period of sh*t coming out of the 2009 trade period and resulting salary cap issues etc., whilst forcing us to bottom out through the compromised drafts... but still appear to be finding a way out of it through good recruiting and clever list management.

Who's to say that next season, with the right coach & coaching staff, Melbourne won't turn it around? To suggest they're deserving of another early draft pick who will come on in 3-4 years time to help them at the top is wrong. let them fight their way to the top like everyone else. Force them to get things in order.
(plus, as I read on a couple of Melbourne threads on the topic, they'll probably f*ck up the pick anyway and waste it).

West Coast got Darling with a priority pick.
We traded the one we got for Lisle.

Okay, shows you what I know (which is actually not very much)... though I guess a priority pick at pick 29 (Lisle) and pick 26 (Darling) isn't exactly what's being discussed for Melbourne... the press is reporting looking at a pre-round 1 priority pick - not an end of round 1 pick in draft already tampered with by the Gold Coast/GWS picks.
If someone thinks pick 29 will help Melbourne, then give it to them. Of course they can still get good players at that stage of the draft - I'm just tired of the top end of the draft being rorted.

West Coast got Darling with a priority pick.

West Coast also got a priority pick in 2008 when they claimed Luke Shuey with pick 18, two years after playing in back to back Grand Finals.

Ridiculous that a powerhouse club such as West Coast, especially off-field and with the resources at their disposal has had two priority picks in such a short period of time, yet we have not had one priority pick despite playing in only one finals campaign in 9 years in addition to finishing in the bottom four or five during the most compromised draft period in the AFL's history.

Astounded that educated footy people such as Lethal and Robbo are in favour of gifting Melbourne another pick. Honestly if Melbourne get one this year, then so should we.

Pretty sure we used a compensation pick not a priority pick, big difference

We had both that year. We traded our priority pick for Lisle and used our compo pick on Yeo.

When I hear Melbourne and Priority Pick in the same sentence I automatically think PP at start of first round not PP at end of first round for some reason ....

Most people seem to be doing so.

I don't like the idea of them getting any priority pick, but one at the end of the first round is a lot less objectionable than getting a free top three pick.

Amazing article by the man himself.

A changing relationship

Michael Voss

When I took over as the Lions coach for the 2009 season, I'd only been out of the game as a player for a couple of years myself. Many blokes I'd played alongside I was now coaching – Simon Black, Jonathan Brown and Luke Power most notably. There was also Ash McGrath, Daniel Bradshaw, Jamie Charman and Jared Brennan among a few others.

You've got to stand behind what you believe in and that's where I've learned my biggest lesson.
My mantra was to be up front and honest with them. It should be for everyone, but especially this group – whether that's good news or bad news. The experience with what happened with Daniel Bradshaw cost me not only a player, but a friendship.

Being up front was the thing I came in with and I dodged it on that occasion. I swore to myself that under no circumstances would I ever dodge that again.

Blacky and Browny will be afforded the same discussion - whenever that time comes.

Chatting to any player that his career might be over via trade, delisting or retirement is hard enough but when you have a premiership with these guys, it makes it even harder.

The clock is ticking for my other former teammates, McGrath, Brown and Black. Each has brought something significant to this club. They have believed in something bigger than themselves and enjoyed outstanding careers with our club.

WELL worth the full read, though.

Do you honestly think he's going to come out and say he's interested in a job that is already occupied by someone else? If he did, it would instantly turn me off the idea of him coaching us, to have that much disrespect for a current coach.

He sounded to me more like a man who is increasingly coming around to the idea, or at the very least give it more consideration.

After reading about Mark Harvey putting his hand up for the Melbourne job, if that did eventuate I would be hoping we spoke to Roos about filling in his old position. It could work well for both parties, Roos gets back into the coaching game without the rigors and media demand of a head coach, while Voss gets the additional support of a premiership coach to bounce his ideas off.

Not sure that Vossy would be comfortable having Roos literally looking over his shoulder all the time..

Roos seems to be his biggest threat in the eyes of a lot of people...MV will know it too.

I'd love this. My impression is that Voss has an incredibly detailed understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each players, almost to the point of obsession, and retaining that knowledge in our organisation while also getting Roos' experience and big picture thinking would be fantastic.

I just can't see it working at a practical level. Roos is a bit more alpha than, say, Bomber Thompson, and I reckon he'd chafe a bit taking instruction from Voss.

In theory, we should be getting a lot of these benefits from having Mark Harvey as senior assistant.

Once again it depends on whether or not Roos has the passions. It also depends on how well they can work together and Roos would be happy to be 2IC.

I could see Roos as a footy manager but not as a senior assistant. I'm not sure what would be in it for him to return in an assistant's role. Same hours, same travel, same disruption to his life as a senior coaching role but with a smaller pay packet and less control over the outcome.

Do you honestly think he's going to come out and say he's interested in a job that is already occupied by someone else?

I don't expect him to openly campaign for the Lions or any other job but I do find the whole 'I won't quite rule it out but I'm kind of not interested but I might wake up tomorrow and be interested' thing a bit tiresome. Surely for a mill or two a year you can say "I'm in the market for a job if the offer is right "or "I'm really not interested in anything ever" or "I might be interested in some kind of development role" or even, "My kids are getting close to finishing school so I'm starting to think about whether I want to coach again".
