I would have thought if we went into the VFL we can just poach players from the WAFL as our top up players. It would give them a chance to play in a national league.

Is that how the other AFL players are doing this? IE Lions, GWS, GC , Swans ect ?

Of course that is possible but will they want to play for a team that is really just training or stay in the WAFL and play for something.
Money of course will talk and if they allow them to throw stupid money at everyone then yes they will get the good WAFL players for the right price.

Waterman is the best example of one wanting to play for a real team. Gave up his job at West Coast to play for a chance of winning a wafl premiership at claremont. .Even playing for the Beagles in hope of being drafted to the eagles is a long shot. Was it Nic Reid who got one year as a rookie?

Would never happen, the distance is too great as well as other logistic nightmares/disadvantages.

The WAFL team will naturally improve with the new allowances, the contract changes within the club, and with a fit list.

GC just won the VFL flag so they’re not just training. Even if it’s more soulless than a league club with a long history etc

it won’t be like it was 30 years ago where winning a flag in the seconds was a good result for your club. They were genuine teams back then that were playing to win the reserves premiership.
they also won’t be the game before the seniors as it was before, maybe once or twice a year at most you will see them play before the AFL team.
if that’s the path the AFL take then I a, sure they will convince the masses it is all of a sudden a real comp and that’s ok, but it will be a tier below The SANFL and the WAFL just as the VFL pretty much is now.

why would they wanna re sign with us anyway

Well. I mean there’s the pretty enticing thought that you might win a game or two for the year, get moved around on positional needs for 18 year olds who should be playing wafl reserves or if heaven forbid they have enough players to fill up a team you can have the weekend off…

I couldn’t imagine why Clark and foley would rather Subiaco … it’s the point. Delisted blokes who have original wafl clubs won’t have a bar of the eagles reserves side.

Based on searching the Players page on the WAFL website, a handful of top-ups have gone back to their original sides - Josh Browne to East Freo, Josh Edwards to Peel, plus we knew about Waterman. And Jed Kemp seems to have joined Perth.

Recruiting going well then

Hard to blame them for leaving tbh. Last year had to have been rough and not really what they signed up for

And it’s always going to be difficult to retain those AFL players you’ve just delisted, especially the ones originally from WA

What would be useful is the AFL to grant us an extended rookie list, maybe even just cat b rookies.

Having an extra 2-4 players like Dewar and Baker is hardly an advantage at AFL level but would help with numbers for the WAFL side

There is already 10 players on every AFL list that average second tier players, why put more on there?

Rucci also referenced West Coast’s desire to join an expanded VFL competition or a newly-orchestrated AFL reserves league, while believing the Adelaide Crows will follow Port out of the SANFL.

“So it’s only a matter of time now,” he continued.

“It’s now up to the AFL to leave the platform, as we heard West Coast say only last week. They’re waiting for this national reserves (competition).

“The two AFL clubs (including Adelaide) play under different rules to the other SANFL clubs which makes success difficult and frankly, has a detrimental impact on the development of our AFL players,” Koch said.

No other AFL clubs have this imposition on their player development. It is an issue we are working to solve in the near future one way or another, and we will solve it.
excuse me what GIF

Have to laugh at him saying that Port need to play in a better comp so their players develop better. A national reserves comp will be lower than the SANFL and the WAFL.

You have your blinkers on where you still think the WAFL is above all else. A quote from Kym Dillon for perspective for you, he sees the writing on the wall

Co-host Kym Dillon admits it will be a sad day when the 36-time SANFL premiers do fall out, but does not see any other way forward from an AFL perspective.

“It’s sad for the SANFL,” he said.

“It drops down to another level when it eventually happens.

Been pointed out to you numerous times which you keep willfully ignoring:
-If an AFL reserves comp happens the WAFL and SANFL will get raided for talent to make it viable, it's inevitable. Playing ammos like the Beagles have been doing won't cut it on a national level.
-AFL list sizes won't need to increase to make it happen, the current VFL teams manage this already with their current AFL list sizes.
-Money and opportunity will be enticing to play in an AFL reserves comp. Playing against AFL listed players in a reserves comp is a good way for draftees with AFL aspirations to get noticed
-The Beagles also won't be hampered by a points / salary cap like they currently are.
-There is going to be a significant hole in the WAFL budget with the licensing fee for the Beagles suddenly missing as well (not sure if Fremantle also pay a fee for their alignment with Peel)

You are seriously underestimating the appeal of an AFL reserves comp for players to participate in, and the drain it will have on WAFL resourcs. The romanticism of the old WAFL comp from the 70s/80s/90s will only get you so far.
